It's a toss up between The Thing and Halloween as far as my top Carpenter films.
As for Halloween, as much as it popularized the slasher genre, it owes a lot to the Canadian film,  Black Christmas, which came out a couple years prior. Heavily influenced Carpenter and it's a solid movie.
F13th took the slasher genre and busted it out into the mainstream. I'm a fan but will always prefer Halloween to the Friday series even tho the F13th series as a whole is stronger.
Ok, I really need to put the bowl down, I meant Nightmare on Elm Street.
The whole nightmares being deadly thing was fucking brilliant and it was devastatingly terrifying to me and my friends.
Somebody said Halloween made them sleep with the lights on, Nightmare on Elm Streetmade me and my friends afraid to sleep at all.  For months.
I remember a sleepover that was fucking traumatic, all of us trying to keep each other awake, pretending we weren't scared until we started to nod off, jerking awake with panic.

Effective horror premise, though much of the execution wasn't on par with what would be done now.

Maybe it's just me, I like stories with things to think about, not just a guy walking around with a knife, stabbing people.
Friday the 13th blew me away, Halloween left me wondering why people liked it at all.
For me, The Thing was Carpenter's better work, it kept you guessing and wondering.
Halloween is a classic American horror movie, I can't deny that, but like so much of what happened between 1975 and 1990, I just scratch my head and wonder WTF were people thinking.
I like all different kinds of stories. I like Halloween more than Friday the 13th (though I'm not a particular fan of either, really. There are so many horror movies that are SO much better than those ... and FTR, I dig "gore porn" movies as well, lol. I love a good Eli Roth, Rob Zombie, et al flick!). However, I also think that Halloween/Mike Myers gives you things to think about.... Maybe Halloween is just over your head rgambs. =);) (I'm kidding! But just like with music, sometimes people "get" movies that others don't "get". Or maybe it's closer to say some "feel" them while others don't ... seems like that's the case here :) ).
I like gore porn too and it wasn't even accurate anyways so I don't know why I said that.
Maybe I need to put down the bowl lol

I came up in the Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer era, so I need the blood because the precedent has been set, and I need more than just slashing and stabbing because it's so overdone.
Maybe I need to put down the bowl lol

It isn't a horror movie, but Pan's Labyrinth sustained a creepy vibe very well.  Bouncing between surrealism and hyperrealistic and hardcore violence, interesting and original aesthetics.
Not horror, but any fan of horror should enjoy it.
"Put Down the Bowl!" should be the name of a stoner horror film.

    *hits the bowl*
    =)

I like these types of films with some meat to them...a solid psychological angle.  Sometimes that can be more horrific than blood.
Me too, I feel like that genre is getting better and better, and this new one with Jennifer Lawrence looks good.

Check out Coherence if you get a chance.
It had us creeped out for bit, it's not really horror though, just creepy and then later very deep and thinky.

I hate it just as much when they try to over-explain it and it becomes a convoluted mystery that they need to "solve"

    The "best" IMO are

    Poltergeist
    The Conjurings
    Insidious
    House of 1000 corpses

    Underrated/forgotten:  "They"

Yeah, some of the reviews are disappointing... But I'll judge for myself. I find it hard to believe that Javier Bardem isn't any good.

he wasn't bad or anything, i just think Jennifer's performance was the highlight.  Most of the problem was the story, especially near the end.  Kinda just a trian wreck IMO

While I haven't seen this yet, I'm hearing many that have similar tastes as me, love this film. Apparently its somewhat of a thinker type of film, left up for the viewer to decide what happens....
I've stayed away from spoilers and will see it over the next couple days to form my own thoughts.

The Shining - Will always be my number 1 horror flick, Kubrick was the master of almost any genre.

Wolf Creek - If you don't know this Aussie horror, do yourself a favour, it's so badass..

The Omen II - Just a great, freaky as fuck story!

John Carpenter's Vampires was on tv last night.  Forgot how much of a god, solid film that was.  Not sure where i would rank it as far as Carpenter movies go though (haven't seen everyone).  Maybe somewhere in the middle?

I thought overall the season was pretty good.
Season 2 so far has been great, and in episode 4 they just pulled the rug out from under us. Bigger than the first season.
    Wow. Good stuff. :fearful:

    Gore porn? Halloween?
Are you talking about that abomination of a remake Rob Zombies made cause you can't be talking about John Carpenters film. There was very little blood shown.
My top 3 horror film and it's considered a classic for a reason.

I was thinking the same thing. This guy is clueless. Halloween is still my favorite horror movie of all-time. Gore porn? You must be talking about the pathetic movies that Rob Zombie directed- all of them suck
