The WAR album back in the day was one of my favorites which replaced the BOY album...I was a u2 fanatic through theri first 4 albums.

This past Valentine's Day I had a series of things I did for my honey so while I bathed her in our jacuzzi tub I hooked up that *Drowning Man* video to a monitor and played it for her. She melted to the point of where tears rolled forever. We played it 3 more times needless to stay we had a glorious night that just washed away all of our day to day stresses.

This has been a treat to go back and remember these tunes that used to consume me through college and in later life. Nailing one tune is far too difficult OP a top 20 would be a tad bit easier good thread just the same.

Also if you listen to Bono's voice it was one of the first times I heard a change in his voice. To me he sounded to command his voicing of love in the song and for whatever reason back then and today I loved that. I would have loved to hear this song live in concert in one of the many I've attended.

They were really young for their first albums. Your point about Bono's voice maturing is valid.

Forgot to mention "A Sort of Homecoming" (thanks for listing it, Rick! ) Everything about that song is beautiful: the lyrics, the music, Bono's voice. The lyrics are amongst my favorite by Bono:

And you know it's time to go
Through the sleet and driving snow
Across the fields of mourning to a light that's in the distance.

And you hunger for the time
    Time to heal, 'desire' time
And your earth moves beneath your own dream landscape.

    On borderland we run.
I'll be there, I'll be there tonight
    A high-road, a high-road out from here.

The city walls are all come down
The dust a smoke screen all around
See faces ploughed like fields that once
    Gave no resistance.

And we live by the side of the road
On the side of a hill as the valleys explode
    Dislocated, suffocated
The land grows weary of it's own.

    O com-away, o com-away, o-com, o com-away, I say I
    O com-away, o com-away, o-com, o com-away, I say I

Oh, oh on borderland we run
And still we run, we run and don't look back
I'll be there, I'll be there
    Tonight, tonight

I'll be there tonight, I believe
    I'll be there so high
    I'll be there tonight, tonight.

    Oh com-away, I say, o com-away, I say.

The wind will crack in winter time
    This bomb-blast lightning waltz.
No spoken words, just a scream
Tonight we'll build a bridge across the sea and land
See the sky, the burning rain
She will die and live again tonight.

And your heart beats so slow
Through the rain and fallen snow
Across the fields of mourning to a light that's in the distance.
Oh, don't sorrow, no don't weep
For tonight at last I am coming home.
    I am coming home.

Brilliant and beautiful. I think we can all agree that Bono is one of the greatest lyricists of all time.

Bad -- only song that makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up

    Followed closely by:

All those who seek to destroy the liberties of a democratic nation ought to know that war is the surest and shortest means to accomplish it.

Ok while I was making my list on the previous page starting with Bad I was TRYING to remember the song from the first side of TUF album. There was a song there that not too many people liked or noticed but I loved it and this was the song *A Sort of Homecoming*. Another beautiful song from U2's youth, actually as they started their maturity musically which lead to the monster album JT and EVERYBODY jumped aboard. That's when my little secret band lept up into the stratosphere and when I cooled on the band....still loved them but not as fanatical as i was with the first 4. Time to mow the lawn and i'll give the entire TUF album a listen while i mow.

There are so many, but if I am to pick one, I Will Follow

As a huge U2 fan this is also my answer. A while ago I decided to pick I Will Follow when asked this question. With so many great songs to choose from, how can you otherwise only pick one? So I Will Follow it is for me too. The first song on their first album and such an energy!

Other favourites include (in random order):
    - Acrobat
    - Drowning Man
    - Exit
    - God Part II
    - Beautiful Day
    - No Line On The Horizon
    - Where The Streets Have No Name
    - Bad
    - A Sort Of Homecoming
    - The First Time
    - Tomorrow
    - Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me
    - Please
    - One Step Closer
    - One
    - Gone

    The list is endless... :)

This thread has made me go back and revisit their back catalogue. Goddamn, these guys are easily amongst the greatest songwriters in the history of popular music. I'm baffled by the amount of hate they receive from people these days. Yeah, their newer albums aren't quite as good as their earlier work. But they're still producing some brilliant stuff, like this:

    and this:

    and this:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2QhOrNXL780

I was first introduced to this band's music back in 1985 at the age of 11, and I'm still a fan to this day. Personally I can't wait to see what they have in store for us next.

Oh, and my favorite U2 song of all time: Bad.
"I try my best to chug, stomp, weep, whisper, moan, wheeze, scat, blurt, rage, whine, and seduce. With my voice I can sound like a girl, the boogieman, a Theremin, a cherry bomb, a clown, a doctor, a murderer. I can be tribal. Ironic. Or disturbed. My voice is really my instrument."

Ya know, I used to not be to fond of U2, but thanks to Newch91, I've open my mind to them a little bit. I still prefer "Achtung" and prior.

Best song is hard for me to pin down. I love "Where The Streets Have No Name" and "A Sort Of Homecoming". Definitely songs that get stuck on repeat from time to time.
    7/2/06 - Denver, CO
    6/12/08 - Tampa, FL
    8/23/09 - Chicago, IL
9/28/09 - Salt Lake City, UT (11 years too long!!!)

Considering that New Year's Day is almost 30 years old, 'old stuff' is very relative. :D

Damn It didn't dawn on me that song *NYD* was nearly 30 years old. I gather I was looking for something from the *Boy* album. It just goes to show how up to date some of their *older* songs really are.

Vastly underrated album. "Please", IMO, is the best song on that album. I also love "Mofo."

Please is an awesome song, loved the live version that came out as a single over here. Have it somewhere, should dig it out really.

As for a favourite, really can't pick, but here's 5 off the top of my head.

    Bad
    Out Of Control
