I would love to see a woman elected as president, but I would only vote for a woman if she represented the views and policies I support. You would not find me voting for Sarah Palin or Christine O'Donnell, for example.

I agree except I would vote for Sarah ;)

I agree, I wouldn't vote for a person based on their race or sex. It's more important to know their policies and issues that are more in tune with my views. I gather though that more women would get out and vote IF a woman was running for president.

I guess it really depends on the woman. Some may vote for a woman just to break through the barrier. It would be cool to see 2 female nominees representing each of the major political parties 8-)

  • The idea of a moron like Sarah Palin being taken seriously as anything is baffling to me.

And the fact that there was only a negligible number of women who voted for John McCain because she was on the ticket shows that women are a lot more difficult to sway that just finding some woman and throwing her up on a stage, ready or not.

While I think a lot of women (and a lot of men, honestly) were let down that Hillary Clinton didn't get the nomination, they knew that just voting for Sarah Palin because of her vagina and despite of her obvious incompetence would have been a horrible decision.

I also don't think that there are any men who voted for Barack Obama because they didn't want to vote for a woman.

    Yeah.

Sarah Palin, who thinks Africa is a country and thought her foreign policy experience of sharing a border with Kamchatka was enough... who inexplicably changed colleges 6 times and it's unclear if she finished... and is more interested in stirring up shit with passive aggressive Facebook posts. There's someone you want negotiating treaties with Saudi Arabia and handling the Libya crisis.
  • i know when comes to politics alot of issues and dialogues can open,

I would not vote for someone just because she's a woman (as someone else mentioned, if I were American, I wouldn't vote for some crazy lady like Bachman, or some idiot like Palin). And the Premier of my province is a woman and she's a fool - i'd never vore for her (even ignoring the fact that she's not with the party i support in my province). But I do admit that if the candidate (for Prime Minister, in my case), was with a party that is generally aligned with my views, and was a genuinely worthy candidate, that she's female would be another feather in her cap for me, and that would tip the scale with all.other things being equal. The world needs more women in politics; the number of men vs women in politics nationally and globally is an absolute travesty, and a scary reflection of what is still gling on in society on a global level as far as gender equality is concerned. I rather wish that more men would concern themselves with this issue as well.I tend to think that the main problem here would be men who don't want to vote for a woman despite her abilities than it would be women voting for a woman just because she's female.

No, I would not vote for someone, simply because she's a woman.
I think some men would never vote for a woman president, no matter how 'hot' she is.

I'm only voting for a woman if i think she is going to do a good job. I think it's really too bad that we (the US) don't support viable 3rd parties. The Green Party has two women running right now and they aren't invited to the debates or even on the ticket in most states.
Are we getting something out of this all-encompassing trip?

I cannot speak from the American perspective, but the German chancellor is a woman. I don't think people voted for her because she is a woman, but because of her work as a politician and the agenda of her party. I think when it comes to the person who should be representing your country in the world, you should consider not having your decision influenced by superficial factors like looks. If people don't give their vote to a woman because she is a woman, regardless of her political experience and talent, they are simply stupid and backwards.

I understand the desire for strong third and forth parties... but, coming from a country whom has that, it's not any better. It tends to actually further separate the voters, resulting in the minority vote determining the national leaders. Canada is suffering under a shitty coherent that oy about 30% of Canadians voted for. The other 70%'s vote was split between 4 other parties. So minority wins.

True, but from the perspective of only having a viable two party system for so long, I feel that we are at the point of few underlying differences between the two major parties. It's only surface differences we are seeing right now (one or two issues that are pushed as the major party platform). I would like to see how the electorate would respond to having debates that spend more time discussing issues. I guess I would hope that the electorate would have to become more informed than they are now.

  • I voted for Hillary Clinton over Obama in the primary four years ago. I don't think it matters at all if the canidate is a man or woman.

That's what was SO INSULTING TO THE INTELLIGENCE OF THE COUNTRY when McCain named Sarah Palin his running mate. The only "logical" explanation for it is that he thought "Derrrrr, if that many people voted for Hilary Clinton, maybe people WILL vote for a woman!" What....a....moron.
She was nominated to be Vice President simply on the basis of being a moderately attractive woman. That's it.
