according to HuffingtonPost ... dude has been arrested and charged ... but he's blaming some guy in NYC ...
  • I am just glad that people are being held accountable now, Amanda deserves that at least.

Reading some of the comments on other websites has made me very afraid of the state of humanity. Thankfully this forum has compassionate and knowledgeable people who care for others.

then he must know something if he saying some guy in NY is behind it...or at least you would think...either way he won't get the justice he deserves.

I don't know what kind of criminal justice he'll get, but since all of his info, including his address, is out there, his life is effectively ruined (and he's in real danger), so that makes me happy.

  • It doesn't seem to stop....

This idiot wrote something horrible on Amanda Todd's Memorial Facebook page and wound up losing his job.
I will never understand why someone would do this, or why people seem to hate her so much. Ridiculous

Nowhere to the same extent, but the same thing happens on this forum as well. Though I don't participate in twitter, facebook and the like, I assume in those mediums too.

That's pretty brutal that they outed the wrong person. :? Has the guy even been convicted of any crime yet?? Hope he's guilty...

ya ... they basically said that they cross-referenced some IP addresses and that at the very least it was another pedophile ...

if anyone gets a chance ... there is a documentary i saw at hot docs this year called hacktivists and it's about Anonymous ... pretty interesting to see how they started off as basically a group of people that believed in non-censorship to helping to support the arab spring ...
  • Yes this is a sad case but are we overlooking the fact that the kid was probably thirteen at the most when she exposed herself to some loser on the net. May be the bigger problem kids.

I'm sorry if this sounds insensitive, but jumping in front of a train to kill yourself is a selfish way of committing suicide.

Wow, just watched Amanda's video for the first time. All I feel like doing is reaching through the screen and giving that poor love a hug. How sad, so she made a mistake showing herself, to follow her and torment her like they did is just down right disgusting! Her bullying was just relentless, I can understand how she would have felt like she'd had enough. How can people so young show so much hate for someone who hasn't done anything wrong? R.I.P. Amanda.

Sounds like this girl had a very difficult life and never found the love or acceptance so many of us can take for granted. Two basic human needs are to connect and to feel like we count...which is why bullying can be so painful when it seems like you have no value to anyone...especially as an adolescent when you're trying to figure out who you are...the bullying tells you that you are worthless. These stories make me very sad and angry.

When I hear about stories such as these ones I often wonder, is kids being bullied in school actually worse than it was in generations past or are kids somehow just less prepared to deal with people making fun of them? I mean I was in school in the 80s and 90s and yes there was no social media but in turn there was people making fun of other people or picking on them directly to their face (which is a lot harder to ignore than facebook is). Plus back then being a nerd was a lot less socially acceptable. I mean if you liked computers or super heroes those were things that you could be made fun of for. Now you pretty much have to be skilled with computers to do many day to day things, and super heroes are big budget hollywood block busters that everyone is into. Plus it was the days before call display, so people could prank call you and you really had no idea who it is. I honestly do feel bad for the families of kids who kill themselves, but I do wonder why those kids thought killing themselves was the only way.

I think the social media just makes it so much harder to get away from. It used to be that you would face bullying on the bus or in school, but when you got home, you could get away from it...unless the bullies showed up at your door, or like you said did a prank call. I think the people who complete suicide also have little other social or family support, like the girl in the article I quoted. People are probably better equipped to dealing with bullying from peers if they at least have some solid family support - someone that makes them feel valued.

I am not sure it harder to get away from now. I mean if most of it is done online, it shouldn't be that hard to turn off your computer, or your phone should it?

I think the problem is the bullying lives on forever. Instead of comments made here or there heard by a few, it is heard/seen by all and seen over and over again. Doesn't go away.

I think having things like that on the internet create a feeling that "everyone knows about this" and even more of that "there is no where I can go to get away from this" feeling. If that makes any sense.

So I think it is worse now. I also think it gives the bullies more of a reason to do it and to keep doing it as it provides them kicks for much longer periods of time since it is saved for all to see all the time.

yes - like in the case of Amanda - who changed schools and towns and the bullying still seemed to follow her...she tried to escape it and couldn't. Even if she turned off her computer, etc. her schoolmates didn't...so it's following her from one school to the next...one town to the next.

  • I could be wrong but wouldn't isolating yourself by turning off your computer and phone just add to the misery? Now because of the bullying they have separated themselves from the world even more. Kids shouldn't have to disappear to be safe from bullying, they should be able to do whatever they want with their lives. The solution would be to stop it at the source, not put a band-aid on it.
