July 22 does seem a bit like tradition. I think shows in '98 and '06 fell on the same day
Jack Johnson is playing the Gorge on the 22nd. So if PJ play somewhere around the same time.....

Doesn't have to be July. I remember the '06 shows were blazing hot. I got there for doors to get a poster, and I was already pretty wiped by the time they took the stage. June/Early July or Late August/Early September would be sweet. I remember the weather at Gorge '05 (early September) being perfect.

Man I loved your story of 'running like an idiot' for the far merch booth to get a poster!

Yah that was nuts running full speed down the hill... lol. I remember someone saying the posters sold out at the top merch booth, and being an experienced Gorge concert goer I remembered there's a merch booth at the bottom too.. lol. Darting down the hill in near 120f weather.... great idea
Back to the weather I went to the Gorge for Soundgarden/QoTSA in 2011 and it was blazing hot too. Saw Petty in 2015 in mid-august and it seemed much more reasonable. I also rememmber lolla '97 being a scorcher (And they set up mist tents for it). I think that was July too... so I go by my original post. Last Half of July and First half of August are probably the hotest times of year to put on gigs there :(
I also love the giant dustdevils that form in the desert around the gorge when its crazy hot.

Tool is tempting.... The Vancouver show is a Thursday so that's worst case scenario when ferries are involved (tues-thurs are the worst because you can attach them to a weekend to reduce your time away from work :( ). This is one of those scenarios where the Vancouver show is midweek and the Gorge/Seattle show is on the weekend.... hmmm..
I'm trying to be conserative with money this year though. I've seen Tool 4 times. Lolla '97 at the Gorge, Vancouver 01, Twice while I lived in Edmonton (06 & 10 maybe?). They were all great shows except the Vancouver one... lol.... The Lolla '97 show was insane. Maybe because the audience was still pretty young back then. Korn dropped off the bill so the only bands of note were Snoop Dogg and Tool. They had to bring their A game and they both did. Tool got to play a pretty decent sized set because of the missing band. The mosh pit was brutal. There's only two times I've had to step out of the heart of a mosh pit. Tool at the Gorge in '97 and Pearl Jam at Memorial Stadium in '98.... Maybe it's just the crowd there at the time
I was also tempted to go to Gorge to see GNR because it's the same thing. Weekday show in Vancouver, weekend at the Gorge. All these bands I've seen before. I bought a truck so I'm trying to spend less right now (and I spent a mint on concerts last year). I think only Pearl Jam can break me out of my stop paying to see bands I've seen lots of times before funk.
I think I'll end up making a run for Tool. They put on such an amazing light show I don't mind sitting up on the lawn. Plus, the carrot of new songs being debuted is just too good for me to pass up. I'm In Seattle so it's about the same drive for either Vancouver or the Gorge, but I just love the amphitheater. I'm thinking that this particular thread is going to be alive and well next year, though. I just took a peek at the Gorge schedule and it looks to be just about booked up for 2017. There are really only three weekends left open on the Gorge schedule that do not coincide with Soundgarden/EV's tours.

Keep the faith, PJ could still make it happen this year!
Also, Zod, I was at that Lolla 1997, and Tool were incredible!!! Wish I could swing a trip down to the Gorge in June, but the date is 3 weeks before my wife is due with our first kid. I'll have to settle for Vancouver this time around.

Looks like 2017 may be out, but I'll wait a bit longer to change the thread title.
