C'mon Godfather, posting a story (with no link may I add, not even Fox News) and pretending that it's true? Do you value truth at all or just any story bashing Obama? That could go for many people on here...

Oh man, the Republicans must be feeling really desperate now, trying convince people that Obama is handing land and oil reserves over to Russia for no reason other than to suck up and be Putin's bitch. :fp:

Why can't you believe it, he's handed over 5 billion dollars to Brazil to drill for oil.

you made a thread based on an "email forward" that was clearly based on bs without thinking about it or checking it yourself ... this is why we keep harping on critical thinking ... it means you take the time to think through what someone is trying to feed you ... you did so because the email suited your partisan beliefs ... facts and truths have no meaning anymore in the discussion ...

i'm sorry if you took offense but the reality is that as a nation - people should be embarrassed that mistruths and propaganda pieces get soaked up on both sides ... just because it suits one's partisan's beliefs ... at one point the majority of americans thought Iraq was responsible for 9/11 ... and at one point, 30%+ thought Obama wasn't born in america ... this is stuff that has to make one question the ability of the people to think for themselves ...

I actually had more cranky, old-mannish, Repub type views when I was younger. The party has totally lost me. I didn't switch my registration to D until it was time for the PA primary in 2008.

Just few thoughts- these remote islands should belong to neither Russia or the US. They should belong to the Inuit people (or whom ever are native to those islands-- if anyone), whales, polar bears, and planet earth. Drilling for oil in ecologically sensitive areas? Insanity.

You are totally right...look the mess in the gulf with BP...now imagine a spill in this part of the world...clean up would be an extremely tough job considering the harsh conditions in the area.

That's because many Americans tend to equate their strong sense of nationalism/ra-ra-Americanism to agreeing with their government. That is not so much the case elsewhere.

ya know that seems to be true in some countries why is that ? why are Americans proud of their country more so than some others are of theirs...well why do we have a stronger sense of nationalism/ra-ra-Americanism ?
and is there anything wrong with it ?

we are a young country, many of us have fought in wars or have family members that have and some can trace there family all the way back to the civil war or even family members that landed on the new england coast..plymouth rock ?
so maybe that has something to do with it and another thing that may have something to do with it is that this country was started by rebals..the guys that told the Queen to take a hike, the guys that wrote the DOI and signed it risked their lives to do that...hell yeah the Queen was pissed she thought all the new land was property of jolly ol England....we flipped her the bird and said no it's our's and we ain't comin back....so anyway it may very well be in the blood

I don't think Americans are more proud of their country than others, or have a stronger sense of nationalism. It's only a matter of how they display and interpret this nationalism. For example, Canadians are HUGELY nationalistic. As a group, they are massive flag wavers and have an amazing amount of pride in their country because they think it's a great one. But we do NOT tend to display this strong sense of nationalism by defending the poor actions of our government. We tend to be very willing to criticize our government for not living up to our high expectations instead, and consider that a sign of our love for our country. From what I know, I'd say that's generally the tendency among a lot of European countries too (even the French, although they only do it among themselves - if they're comparing themselves to other countries, they will defend their government until they're blue in the face, lol). Those are purely my observations, of course, but I think they're pretty fair.

What I think is wrong with the blind nationalism that SOME people in the US seem to hold is that it causes them to not hold their government accountable. *obligatory disclaimer: Of course many many Americans are highly critical of their government while still nationalistic - I'm talking about those who are that other way; it's just a way more prevalent sentiment in the US compared to other places).

I think what all people who are highly nationalistic, regardless of what country they are from, often tend to not recognize is the greater importance of being a member of a community and of a geographic region and also tend to not recognize the fact that all geographic regions share one thing in common: they are all are a part of one whole-- the same planet. On the grand scale of things, nations are ephemeral whereas geographic regions and the planet as a whole are much more stable and essential to our existence.

Geographic regions are definitely a lot more important that some people tend to think IMO. I think that a lot of people don't recognize the profound impact it actually has on us as individuals and as societies. I think it even goes so deep as to affect our cultural memory.
