Unreal, way to retire like a coward since your program recruited players who's future should be working at McDonalds. College basketball will be better off with out you. Reminds me of Pete Carroll jumping ship at USC when the going was about to get tough. Cowards!!!!

One of the greatest coaches in men's college basketball history.

How do you expect a 70-year-old to coach with a broken hip?

Do you know anything about him? Probably not.

Calhoun doesn't care if you like him or not. He hasn't ever kissed ass to any refs unlike some coaches (Coach K).

Correct about one of the greatest coaches in NCAA Mens BB! 3 National Titles and over 850 wins - plus he put UCONN on the map at a time they struggled to make the NIT...

Now, with all due respect, Coach Calhoun did coach through 3 different bouts of cancer, broken ribs from a bicycle accident, a spinal condition and back surgery...so a month old hip injury certainly isn't the main reason this ol' guy is walking away, right? Let's face it, he cared nothing about academics and recently improperly contacted recruits, gave them improper benefits and distributed free tickets to high school coaches and others, ie: failing to maintain an atmosphere of compliance. Add to the fact two of his assistants & FIVE underclassmen left the Huskies after last season due to not being able to even play in the tourney in 2013 and I believe Lamb and Drummond left early for the NBA...
I don't think mean things or coward should necessarily be tossed around, but they no doubt had a little something to do with him walking away, no? I'm sure the state of CT is pleased he's gone, I read somewhere he is the highest paid employee of the state by far.

Coach Calhoun's UCONN squad beating Duke was so awesome. I hope his health is good enough to keep running all of the charities he's involved with. He may have done some improper things, but he certainly has a lot of good he did for the ol'Nutmeg state and many of the ex-players he coached worhip the ground he walked on!

They were penalized as they should have been. The players actually sat out the first game after the sanctions, unlike another school who said, let the kids play in the bowl game, then we will suspend them the following year.

He put you on the map, and donated money to good causes, I'll gladly give him that. Still doesn't change that when the going got tough, he was a coward and walked away instead of facing the penalties that came due to things that happened under his watch.

It's no where near as bad as PSU. My biggest issue is they were allowed to play in the bowl game. The bowl game was the game they should have been suspended for.

  • Im 23. My 2 passions are pearl jam and uconn basketball. Im also a UCONN alum. Tomorrow will be the first day i wake up and he wont be the head coach. He has provided this state with so much joy over the past 25 years. He has done so much for not only the school, but the state as a whole. Hes been behind so many charitable foundations throughout the years. He has an entire wing at the uconn health center named after him for helping raise so much money towards treating heart disease. He has beaten cancer 3 times. He has changed so many young mans lives by providing a father figure many never had. Ask Caron Butler, Kemba Walker, Ray Allen, Richard Hamilton, Emeka Okafor, Ben Gordon, Chris Smith, Donyell Marshall, AJ Price, Taliek Brown, Rudy Gay, Khalid el amin, Jeff Adrien, and Ricky Moore if hes a 'disgraceful coward.' Yes, there can be bumps in the road in any 40 year career (recruiting violation on a rule which has now been deemed allowable by the NCAA, and APR sanctions which is punishing current student athletes who had nothing to do with the low score, but thats a discussion for another time) but i challenge you to please think and educate yourself before you use such harsh words on a man who has been a cornerstone for the university and state since 1986. The word around here is that his retirement is largely due to health concerns. He had hip surgery this summer after falling at his charity bike race. The man has built a force in college basketball, and what he has done for the school and state can not be put into words.

All of college sports is fucked. It's obvious that you just hate Calhoun and can't be rational when talking about him. Disgraceful coward? A bit much. To criticize a 70 year old guy for hanging it up after all that he has been through health-wise is pretty ridiculous.

Did he do many great things, YES! However, walking away or retiring when you are facing sanctions is a cowardly thing to do. Be a man and face your penalties.

He decided to retire when facing a sanction he thought was unfair, but is VERY fair. Make sure your players can make the academic standards set. He is a coward just like Pete Carroll was for jumping ship when the penalties were about to rain down on USC. Walking away instead of facing the penalties that are a result of things that happened under your watch is the definition of coward.

Definitely respect him for his charitable work. But jeez would it kill him to graduate a kid once in a while? And with all due respect to the UConn grads it ain't exactly Harvard. I think the shady dealings of the last few years were just the tip of the iceberg.

Definitely respect him for his charitable work. But jeez would it kill him to graduate a kid once in a while? And with all due respect to the UConn grads it ain't exactly Harvard. I think the shady dealings of the last few years were just the tip of the iceberg.

I'm a UCONN grad, and I guarantee I drank more beer than 99% of Harvard graduates in college, make ....never mind... What makes you think a Harvard degree is so special ;) and had my alma mater win 3 more national championships since I went there. Thank you, Jim Calhoun.

BTW, almost all his violations would be legal by current NCAA standards, and his teams would qualify under the educational guidelines in place at time punishment was determined. And ask Hasheem Thabeet how he likes the Jim Calhoun NBA degree. Hes practically stealing money because Jim knows how to get guys the most out of their desired professions. Why should he get a college degree like the rest of us schmucks? The More You Know.....
Sorry. The world doesn't work the way you tell it to.
