Have this on Monday. Pretty annoying as I'm slammed at work. As a commissioned salesman, if I'm not working, I'm not making money. I would love to see politicians do something useful and make jury duty a requirement for the handout programs. god forbid people should have to do something in order to receive something from the govt

Last summer I was picked. It was annoying from the time I got the letter till I got picked. I ended up enjoying the experience. A week later I got a hand written letter from the judge. Just thanking me for serving. I thought that was really cool.

I get called for duty like clockwork. They never pick me though. I would like the chance to actually serve, but getting called and sitting all day in a crowded room in a Camden basement is annoying. It's frustrating to have to disrupt my caseload too.

They've changed how they call you for jury duty in my county and it's really a piece of cake now. Instead of going down there and sitting all day, when you first receive your summons you can check in on line. A few days before you're supposed to be there, you get an email that tells you which court to report to and at what time. The last time I was called, I got an email the day before saying I was no longer needed. Didn't even have to show up! My husband went through the process and had to stay about 2 hours, no big deal.

I did serve on a jury once and it was a really interesting experience, much more than I would have guessed.

Well when you go on unemployment after you lose your job, and you go to collect the benefits that you paid for, I hope you're reminded daily of what a lazy bum you are and that you're getting "free money" for not doing anything since you've never actually worked.

As far as "handout" programs goes... the way you speak about people who are unemployed, I'm guessing you think they're a bunch of lazy people. Who you now want making important legal decisions about people's lives.

    Great.

And honestly... many of us have jobs, jury duty is part of being American and having to hear people talk about it like it's the end of the world that they have to take an unpaid day to contribute to their country really drives home the fact that "patriotism" is just a flag people wrap themselves in when they need to shit-talk people they feel "above."

And finally... I get called every couple of years. I sit there all day reading a book or maybe doing what work I can on my iPad, and when I finally get called, I walk in, the lawyers and defendants take one look at me and whisper to the judge "the Neo Nazi can go home."

So imagine how annoying it is for me to sit there all day knowing how it's always going to end.

    God Bless America.

Jury duty is an important cog in the American system as a citizen. I've only been called once and didn't make it into the court. I really wanted to go to. BTW, I'm paid on commision as well. I really want to be a part of it someday.

    I agree with this....

Jury Duty is just that a duty...I seem to get called every two years....I don't mind it, and as DS noted, it's as part of being a citizen...folks deserve a fair trial in front of there peers...Once I was an alternate Juror for a armed robbery case...It lasted for two days and I was dismissed at the time for deliberations....I was glad to be a part of it...

the "annoying" angle is a bit childish IMO...

I got picked on a shooting case, went all the way to defense picking or droping jurrers and they asked me "why do you want to serve on this trial" and I replyed "I want to know why a man would shoot another man" and their reply was "thank you Mr. G but your services are no longer needed" so I ended up spending 7 or 8 hours at the court house and going home.

I don't know if was a murder trial or just a agro assualt case but if it was a murder trial I wanted nothing to do with it and besides the defandent looked like a pretty street wise guy...if you get my drift ;)

Poor, poor Prince! We're all judged; we all judge ;)

But yeah, I do agree with the duty part. Aside from it being a good time for me to catch up on reading as well, it makes me appreciate the process, what was put into it.

Plus I enjoy the people watching.

And, it's damn nice to see justice, once in a while, come to fruition.

I also am thankful that my work pays for the time spent there. I know it's financially tough on some, but also think that that commitment TO justice, if one really believes in it, comes with the territory.

There are worse things to have to suck up.

Your first paragraph is confusing. not sure what your point is.

as for your second point, I'm not making that insinuation about unemployed people at all. I know that times are tough and there are lots of educated, decent people out of work. I think it makes more sense for them to serve on a jury rather than those who are contributing to society by going to work every day.

I have to call on sunday night to see if I have to report on monday. I really hope I don't have to show up. I have better things to do...ya know, like work

Not sure if you work for a company as a commissioned salesman or you are self-employed. But in MA if you work for a company, by law, that company has to pay your full work wages for up to 3 days if you are called to jury duty. I got called for jury duty in June and was let go before 10am. I was at the beach by 11am and got paid in full for that day for "work". Aint America great!

I would love to be involved with a case firsthand too. My brother-in-law just sat on a jury for a sexual abuse case. It went on for weeks...they had to take road trips to crime scenes and everything. I doubt they would ever call me for a case like that. Serving grand jury seems cool too - I think it's once a week for 26 weeks. My work would throw a fit, but would be really interesting to be involved at that level.

I am dying to be called for jury duty. I think it would be an interesting change of pace! I'd love to get on a jury and have a break from the office for a few weeks or months!! I don't think it would actually be FUN, but it could certainly be intriguing ... sigh. I think I need a good long vacation.

Why is that those of us dying to serve never get called? Although, I think you're right - intriguing more than fun!

My point is that unemployment is not a "hand out."

A hand-out is something that isn't deserved. Isn't paid for.

Do you consider insurance to be a hand-out? When you get in a car accident and your health insurance and car insurance pay for your broken leg and your car to be fixed, do people call that a "hand-out program" and suggest that you don't really deserve it?

I have only ever been called once...it was cancelled before I had to go...but I have no interest in Jury duty...mostly because I am not 1 for just sitting still...I mostly likely would nod off or tune out. Plus I'd be bad jurer...I have an incredible mistrust of police, lawyers and judges.

I think insurance is almost as big of a scam as organized religion.

I see your point, but I'm biased in my opinion. Insurance (all kinds) shoudl be a choice, not a requirement. I hate being told what to do...especially by the govt.

as for unemp...there should be some kind of ratio that determines how much you are eligible to collect based off of how much you've paid in taxes over the years. and there should be more stringent requirements that people must fulfill in order to obtain govt assistance (volunteer work, jury duty, drug testing, etc)
