I think part of the problem can be demonstrated by the contents in this thread. Here someone posts a pretty depthful argument written by an old-school conservative. He writes about how his party has become more extreme, and the other party has lost touch with how to reach the public. Then he provides a laundry list of examples to back this up - none of which are really all that refutable. He further suggests that the public have been tricked into yelling misinformed talking points back at one another. Yes, I just wrote that about something a conservative person wrote (I am going to take a shower now), and, yet, this thread has discussed relatively nothing about what was said in the article. Perhaps he was right.

    He is right.
For fun, I once in a while scroll down to read the comments section in an article on CNN, an AP article on Yahoo, FoxNews (of course), or any other news site.

it is quite hilarious how people have no shame in demonstrating how an ego fueled by talking points and propaganda can destroy any semblance of rational, intelligent thought.

While the Democrats may have moved from their 40-yard line to their 25, the Republicans have gone from their 40 to somewhere behind their goal post.

This op-ed offends me far more as a football fan than as a non-Democrat. This is a terrible analogy.

it highlights the level of partisan indoctrination that has permeated the public discussion

I'd say the system is the problem. Get rid of parties altogether. putting yourself in a group and being forced to be categorized as something, and then becoming that something more and more as you go along, is the issue.

fighting for the interest of a donkey over an elephant rather than the zookeeper who keeps feeding you is absolute nonsense.

Absolutely. The need for the govt, or society even, to divide us into two categories is Weapons of Mass Manipulation #1. Until we can get smarter and figure out that we're all really on the same team, nothing will ever get accomplished. Ever.

I'll agree with both of these quotes as well.

I don't have much else to say about it. It is an opinion on the state of the party, one that is shared by many. What is really up for discussion?

and it isn't the first time it has been posted. not that there is anything wrong with posting it again, but sometimes people just don't have much to add. It is an opinion piece...a good one at that. well written, and lays out a lot of what is wrong with Washington. I am glad that a conservative makes a distinction here and says that republicans are the problem, not necessarily conservatives...how they came to be synonymous i will never know but it does a disservice to conservatism.
