Oh, ok.. I missed your point.
I was just reading your exact words, "There is nothing more grotesque to me than a girl showing off her new pair of shoes that were likely made in Thailand by a 13 year old in a sweatshop...
Everybody has there own opinion on what the most "grotesque" thing in the world is.... mine is different.
I've seen worse things on the news today.
Maybe you could explain what that "big difference" is... Sounds like now you're saying that as long as you are aware that your computer is made in a sweat shop, its ok. Its the oblivious consumers that are "grotesque".
Maybe Im just not as enlightened.0 -

Now we are getting into semantics. I, too, feel that there are an infinite number of things that we can label more grotesque than showing off a pair of shoes that were made in a sweat shop by a 14 year old in Thailand.
My statements though, are part of a larger criticism of how our gluttonous materialism affects other parts of the world, and where we consume, consume, consume without any idea of the conditions and abuses that others suffer through. Think about the diamond trade in Africa.
And, in case you haven't noticed, I use the word "we" a lot. I concentrate on buying local, organic foods and made in America products. Have I always? No. Do I spend my life in a mall? No. I actually won't step foot in a mall or in a chain restaurant, and so on and so on.
The problem is that even if we are aware of the sweats hops, we don't care. We want what we want and we don't care about the process of how we get it.0 -

You saw this, right?: "And, in case you haven't noticed, I use the word "we" a lot. I concentrate on buying local, organic foods and made in America products. Have I always? No. Do I spend my life in a mall? No. I actually won't step foot in a mall or in a chain restaurant, and so on and so on."
The computer I am typing on was provided by the library. My laptop is an HP, which could have been made in CHina, Palo Alto, Texas, or Mexico. I'll get back to you as it is of utmost importance to the point I was making.
Screw it, let's say it was made in China. Your turn.0 -

1. Why the prejudice for the iPhone? Isn't your computer just as culpable as the phone? Its probably just the Apple corporation, and your interpretation of what it stands for that bugs you... the phone is actually kind of handy.
2. What is keeping you from following your dreams and living in the jungle? Seriously. Why are you NOT doing it?
Thanks.0 -

Are you serious?
Your reply was silly.
1. Why the prejudice for the iPhone? What is the topic of the thread? I am talking about gluttonous materialism in this country. I am talking about the idea that people place value on the things they own and not on who they are.
2. What?
Let me add that I will not reply to anymore of your juvenile responses. When your discourse rises above the level of a gibbon, then we can engage.0 -

Too easy. Say you actually followed your own advice, and didn't buy a made-in-chinese-sweatshop HP laptop- lets say you walk to the library in made in USA shoes and clothes, and only use the public resource for your computer needs. The library bought all those computers from a made-in-chinese-sweatshop company. Whats worse, is the federal govt had to borrow the money from China, just to give it to the bankrupt states, to disperse so their municipalities could afford those sweatshop computers, and if you work- your tax dollars (both state and fed) are supporting free-trade with an oppressive, anti-human rights country.
I'll bet we agree on "China is bad" when it comes to labor laws, and many other areas...
All Im sayin, is you are just as much a supporter of this system as anyone with a iphone, b/c nobody can avoid it... Its everywhere. And our modern lives demand that these things are necessary. If you disagree, then take Chadwick's advice, and try living in the jungle... I can guarantee AT&T wont have service there.
Simply having "consciousness" of the situation, does not, an innocent make- although I bet it plays well to say such high minded things in certain circles. AMT, being one of them.0 -

1.What you're describing is a philosophical problem, not an iPhone problem. So, your thread title is a little narrow.
2. Ya, my bad- I think I confused what you said w/ chadwick's jungle dream.
Call me a gibbon? I must have been close to making sense... b/c you dissolve into name-calling.
Oh well... Must be frustrating for you to live in this unjust world. Look up Miniver Cheevy... you and he would make good companions.0 -
If someone wants to get the newest technology, so be it.
I don't get the rabidness of folks who feel they need to always own the latest and greatest (whether or not it's even affordable!), but again, so be it...just as I don't get waiting for hours on end in line to buy it.
Their choice, in this beautiful world - because it's not just America.
All I can do is live my own life...to try (and sometimes fail) to "be the change I want to see"...and to sometimes sit on the sidelines, pointing and laughing at what I perceive to be the absurdity of others.
(what can I say? It's a good release)
