How do they do it?

How do those who purchase out-of-print Pearl Jam vinyl afford it? Mortgage their homes? Sell off their first born?

Having recently revamped my stereo setup into a better listening space, I thought it might be time yet again to start the search for a few PJ albums I would love to hear in analog on vinyl (in other words- to really hear these for the first time). But albums like "No Code" and "Riot Act" are going for these huge sums of money. It's maddening!

I know you've all heard this rant before so, sorry for my little fit.

I often think this about alot of people buying PJ merch. How do people buy all the posters from a tour? And then get the AP and variants. Then buy all the boots, on cd & download. And every bit of merch sold here. There must be some rich folk on this forum!!

I quit buying posters because the cost of attending shows was getting out of control. I also don't drink at shows because that adds up to more than the ticket price .

Yea i feel the same way. My last show was Jack Johnson, and the beers were fucking 10 bucks each.
So when you add it up with tickets , shirts, posters, parking, beers.... its gets insulting..lol
So now i will just sneak in alittle flask of whisky...does the job

I wonder about tour people more...following PJ on tour is REALLY expensive, and how do they get all that time off? The average number of vacation days for Americans is 10 days a year. They are very lucky to be able to have that opportunity.

The vinyl is easy, you keep looking and you will eventually find it for a good price. One of my first PJ vinyl purchases was the '91 Holiday single...it was an awesome price I couldn't pass it up.

I was lucky enough to have started collecting PJ vinyl before it got popular. I think I bought Ten/VS/Vitalogy/No Code/Yield in Vinyl on 1998. After that I just kept buying things at the were released.

That being said I got more into vinyl these past few years. I have acquired some more expensive ones. My wife bought me Mad Season "Above" on vinyl for my BD this year. On past birthdays/christmas' she bought me other ones like Temple of the Dog, Alice in Chains Facelift, Singles Soundtrack. Stuff I've wanted but I wouldn't buy for myself because they're at least $100 for an original copy.

I have shelled out for some expensive stuff like mirrorball on vinyl, 91 xmas single etc... So I guess my answer is a little spending and let your spouse know about your holy grails :)

Thing is, unlike Mulletman (good one, dimi!) I'm not willing to give my left testicle for any holy grail.

And to make matters more frustrating, back in the early 90's when I was down on my luck, I sold off a bunch of albums (all in pristine shape because I love 'em) for a tiny fraction of what they would be worth today. Well, I guess you gotta eat. :corn:

  • I know what you mean, my wife and i do fairly well (not trying to sound conceited) and I can't even come close to keeping up. I do have a nice poster collection with Klausen being my obsession (only two of them framed though and not professionally), a lot of vinyl but few from PJ due to cost of the originals. Not sure how they do it either. My wife thinks I have over done it and i would agree to some extent but then I tell her examples of some people travelling around the world to follow tours, colelcting ALL posters, flags, bottlegs, etc. and she relazes a bit...By no means am i dogging on any of those people (I'm actually quite happy for them) just relating to you feeling of not knowing how they do it.

I have a German friend who gets about the same amount of time off. What we don't seem to get here in the U.S. is that people who have a reasonable amount of vacation or down-time are more productive over all. But before this starts to sound too much like A Moving Train, I'd better move on.

That sucks. My copy of Benaroya got me through university. The funds start to wear thin every spring when University is wrapping up. Since my record play broke around the time I got my copy I never opened it.. by the time I got a new needle for the player the vinyl was worth 400. It was my financial safety blanket in broke times. I never got the point where I had to sell it though. I got so close, but always seem to dodge it.

I can't imagine what it would be like to have sell off holy grail's from ones collection :(

I'm sorry, but all I could think of was 'uncanny and immutable'.

As to the actual question, people save; people live frugal lives to afford what is important to them. You can't have it all, but you can have some of it if you prioritize. Maybe someone lives in a shack so they can buy vinyl. I've had to cut back on shows because our priorities right now include getting a child through college....
