A couple of days ago, I saw a member of the Portsmouth City Council using a spray cleaner to erase a big graffiti on a typical UK brick wall opposite the Waitrose supermarket in the Southsea area. Unfortunately, I haven't managed tto decipher the underlying layers. Not too far away from that spot, I saw a man in a yellow luminous vest painting something that appears to be an Antifa graffiti with a policeman and the words "Be Inspired" next to him. I'd really like to believe that it's a Banksy, though I highly doubt it. It was early in the morning with a lot of passerby and I got to see his face.

She told the PA news agency that within hours, the council had rushed to protect the piece by placing clear plastic sheeting over it.

That's probably the best thing to do considering the local graffiti artists would just destroy it anyways.

I disagree. Art does not always equate artifact. Process over content. Bansky is a graffiti artist. That's his process and one I value. If other graffiti artists choose to "destroy," then that is part of the process. Besides, I don't think Bansky would mind. The piece that sold at auction, then suddenly shredded. That process was the art.

Let's not bullshit this anymore than we have to.  Banksy WANTS his work to be seen.  He wouldn't video himself doing certain projects unless he wanted to get seen and recognition.  He also wouldn't have opened up a shop to sell his art either.

I would rather not have people tag over his murals.  I would much rather enjoy the mural than someone's local tagging for territory but we can't have that so I like that they preserved it.
