One of the temple's committee members, Ven Boba Ri, told the Journal Sentinel that the shooting was very sad, and he has been fielding calls all morning from around the world, including India.
"Sikhism is such a peaceful religion. We have suffered for generations, in India and even here."

Mitt Romney released a statement. "This was a senseless act of violence and a tragedy that should never befall any house of worship," Romney said. "Our hearts are with the victims, their families, and the entire Oak Creek Sikh community. We join Americans everywhere in mourning those who lost their lives and in prayer for healing in the difficult days ahead."

But what does he propose to do so that this 'senseless act of violence' doesn't happen again (and again, and again...)?
He says an act of domestic terrorism? Is that what a hate crime is called now?0 -
The only hate and anger is if the dead some-how had protected themselves with more weapons... as if it would have mattered.CONservative governMENt
Our government is the potent, the omnipresent teacher. For good or for ill, it teaches the whole people by its example. Crime is contagious. If the government becomes a law-breaker, it breeds contempt for law; it invites every man to become a law unto himself; it invites anarchy. - Louis Brandeis0 -

Mitt Romney's press guy released a statement that he copy/pasted out of a Campaigns For Dummies book from the chapter called "meaningless boilerplate." "This was a senseless act of violence and a tragedy that should never befall <fill in the blank>," Romney's people say he said but he really never uttered those words, just read them off his iPad and said "yeah that sounds legit." "Our hearts are with the victims, their families, and the entire <fill in the blank> community. We join Americans everywhere in mourning those who lost their lives and in prayer for healing in the difficult days ahead."
Then his team said "fuck, I hope we don't have to go through another gun control debate. Let's make a stink about how much money the Mars thing cost." Romney was too busy practicing his smile in the mirror to take part in that meeting."0 -
Is it an act of domestic terrorism because he had been in the military?
because the victims were of a different nationality?
I did not understand the use of that term.
For me this appears to be a hate crime but maybe they know something else.0 -
This is very sad.
Got to hear some talk about what the religion is, etc. And it made me think, yet again, that religions are just weird. I mean, wearing turban because you don't cut your hair? Really? Not cutting your hair gets you a better seat in the afterlife???? What????hippiemom = goodness0 -
We need more guns for all citizens :fp: , & Cincy i don't get what the hair thing has to do with this incident :?jesus greets me looks just like me ....0

I said, I was watching coverage of the incident and they had on one of the religious leaders to talk about their religion. I just found it really odd, like all other religions I guess. But not cutting your hair was the one that really stood out as completely stupid. Just found it interesting and weird. Suppose it should be in another thread about religions being weird though.
As far as the shooting goes, I'm sure the shooter was suffering from a mental illness and we as a society failed to provide him the help he needed. That poor shooter, I can;t believe what we did to him. :fp:hippiemom = goodness0 -

Godfather - All acts of terrorism do not always have to be 'hate'. They are first and foremost politically motivated, whether cast upon same race/religion or different race/religion. Sure 'hate' can come into factor but it is not the only one (or does not have to be factorised).
I understand this person may have been a white supremacist - a racist. Certainly one with 'precedent'.
Also: "Special Agent Thomas Ahern, of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, told ABC News that Page had tattoos which might suggest the attack was a hate crime.
But a member of the temple told CNN the attacker had a 9/11 tattoo on one arm."
I guess whether it's an act of terrorism or a hate crime will depend on his motivation (but how will one be sure since he is dead). Maybe he thought Sikhs were muslims (after all they have dark skin, dress and talk 'funny') and his tattoos may be quite telling.
I'm sure a lot more will be known in the next few days.
And I don't know what the government is willing to do about these shootings...0 -
I'm really saddened to hear of another shooting. My thoughts are with the people and families impacted by this. So far reports have indicated the shooter had numerous issues while in the army and may have been involved with a white supremacist group. No reports of a mental health history at this point.
Edit - Press conference is about to start. He was reportedly discharged from the army for a "pattern of misconduct" and recently legally purchased the semi-automatic he used in the shooting.Post edited by comebackgirl on

I understand what you are saying it's just a little bit of a stretch for me to believe that a crime like terrorism is not linked to hate in some way or at least the terrorism we have been dealing with lately.

It is a blurred line Godfather. I would put Tim McVeigh in the 'non hate crime' type terrorist attack as his action were definitely politically motivated against the government. It was a government building he bombed, didn't care about race/religion of those inside. He could have probably bombed any other federal building elsewhere. He was 'protesting' against government actions at Waco (and another thing but I forgot). Sure, he had hate in his heart but not directed at the people. So, for me, 'non hate'.
On the other hand, the Twin Towers, for me is a 'hate' terrorist attack. Whilst obviously politically motivated and the terrorists looking to make a 'grand impression', I believe it could only have been held in the US, targeting buildings full of americans (or 'similar'). I don't believe that if buildings existed in the US but full of muslims, such buildings would have been attacked. Thus mega hate in that one.
Very subtle difference and I'm not sure I'm expressing this clearly.
What I would like to add that, in order to perpetrate such acts, one has to have hate in his/her heart - whoever/whatever this hate is aimed at.
To me, this shooting seems 'personal' but, as I said, until we know his motives.....Post edited by redrock on0 -
