Show Set List

01. Don't Be Shy-(Yusuf Islam)
02. I Am Mine
03. Can't Keep
(Ed says that he has spent more days in Manchester in the last two months than he has in the previous 20 years. And he still hasn't seen the sun. He amends that by noting he went outside to smoke just before Glen's set and saw the sun but the rain was still coming down)
04. Sleeping By Myself
05. Without You
(Ed discusses the West Memphis Three and all the work that went into getting the innocent men off of death row and out of prison. He also talks about how he recorded "Satellite" about ten years ago that was about them. He says that on the "Ukulele Songs" album you can hear a phone ring just as he finishes recording the song. The phone call was from Damien's wife Lorri.)
06. Satellite
07. Sometimes
(Ed talks about meeting a man named Ognan (sp) who had just recently been married. His arm was in a sling and he explained he broke it at the wedding party. Ed asked where his wife was? Ognan said they could only get one ticket. Ed got Ognan's wife Monica a ticket for the show as a wedding present. He invites them to come up to the stage but they don't appear.)
08. Picture In A Frame-(Kathleen Brennan/Tom Waits)
(Ed still looking for Ognan and Monica tells security that if they see a guy with a blue cast to bring him up to the stage)
09. Untitled
10. Off He Goes
(Ognan finally makes it on stage. Ed congratulates him and gives him a copy of the "Ukulele Songs" songbook)
11. Far Behind
12. No Ceiling
13. Guaranteed
(Rise is dedicated to some people from Manchester that Ed met.)
14. Rise
(Ed talks about his friend, Dennis Flemion of The Frogs, who had recently passed away. Ed dedicates "Long Road" to him.)
15. Long Road
16. Better Man (high string version)
(Ed talks about a Palm's guitar shop in Amsterdam and his old Black Gibson that he got after recording "Into The Wild".)
17. Unthought Known
(Ed says this song was written about Ronny Wood. Ed says he might fuck it up but that Ronny wouldn't care, not that Ronny ever fucks up or remembers it if he does.)
18. Speed Of Sound
19. Lukin
20. Porch
Encore Break 1
21. Elderly Woman Behind The Counter In A Small Town
22. You've Got To Hide Your Love Away-(Lennon, McCartney)
(Ed talks about Chris McCandless and what he learned about living on your own and having great friends to help you out. Ed says that he is very glad Glen is out on stage and on tour with Ed and what a great friend he is.)
24. Society w/ Glen Hansard-(Jerry Hannan)
25. Sleepless Nights w/ Glen Hansard-(Boudleaux Bryant, Felice Bryant) [performed at the front of the stage with no mics or PA]
25. Falling Slowly w/ Glen Hansard-(Hansard, Irglová)

The problem with the Apollo is that the bar is in the seating area, and people are ALWAYS going to talk at the bar (probably completely oblivious to how sound will travel down to the stage), so unfortunately silence isn't possible.

The crowd in general were pretty annoying with their attention seeking shouting at certain parts (what the hell was up with the "What did you have for breakfast?" guy and the woman who decided she needed to finish off Ed's story for him?!), but at least people in my immediate vicinity were perfectly pleasant.

Great set, loved the version of Betterman, and sooooooooo glad to hear the demo version of Speed of Sound.

BTW does anyone have any youtube videos with the same version of Betterman (doesn't have to be at manc)?

The problem with the Apollo is not that there's not enough bars and the main bar is in the hall where artists are playing. Because of this there's always a lot of traffic and noise. Closing the bars during Glen's set would have been a better idea.

On a positive note the gig was amazing, unbelievable setlist.

Very nice set tonight. I just about wish I'd gone but Manchester from here is such an expense especially right on the back of 2 PJ shows there only last month. You need to time it better next time Ed! As for Glen, if you can't be fucked with the support stay out of the fucking room! It really annoys me when people show disrespect to the level that an artist feels the need to mention the talking never mind unplug the sound! Assholes, honestly! These are the same kind of people who find it amusing to piss on public toilet seats. Get a fucking life! I've had gigs ruined by your type and it's very annoying. Please stay very far away...

  • No one was disrespecting Glen Hansard. 7:30 is way too early to start the support act when people are only just getting in and no one can find their seats, and that's without traversing the merchandise stand. I thought it was pretty unprofessional of him to be honest, but he made up for that later.

Wasn't there but nice set,but does Eddie need to always do so much name dropping of every other musician he knows who has died,he respects, cause he supports etc.I have seen/heard him do this so often it is becoming insincere,in my opinion.
Disgusted that it would seem that Glen Hansard had to persistently ask the crowd to be quiet, causing him to end up unplugging.Nevermind if it's 7:30 or not,the ticket has a start time on it for a reason, people will be on the stage doing their job,you don't want to watch them do their job? Stay out of the arena until the main act time,as a large majority of us did in Manchester who had no interest in seeing X.
That kind of audience behaviour is so fucking selfish, the pleasure of going to a concert to actually keep quiet while listening is increasingly being eroded away.I can't go to a concert anymore without some wanker persistently shuffling back and forward to the bar,egobooking/twatting pictures or text that they are there, taking photo's or filming on their damn phones or spending more time talking to their mates. You want to do all that shit? Leave the venue and sit in a pub.In my ideal gig world all electronic communication devises would be confiscated and returned after the show, the bars would be closed during all sets both for supporting and main act,the body can cope for three hours without alcohol people, and any excessive talking would meet removal from the venue.I love seeing people enjoying a gig with singing along, dancing but all the other stuff isn't about the gig it's just selfish behaviour.

What an amazing gig, was pleasantly surprised by Glen Hansard, Eds set was beautiful, Hard Sun at the End was so Powerful.

My gripe was the couple in front of me and my mate sitting in row C in the front circle upstairs, who thought they were fucking Scorcese and Spielberg,
He spent most of the gig checking his phone and waving it in the air whilst recording about half the gig and she had a camera held out in front of her for most of it, After asking them to lower the camera they still continue to. Trying to watch Eddie whilst theirs a glowing mini version of him waving in front of you is irritating.

Was so glad that they had to leave before encore 2, I really hope their recordings sounded shitty when they checked them.

Really hyper crowd too, reminded me of the Benaroya album.

5 different t shirts all black? I want white or red or green anything but black.
  • I absolutely loved it, agree totally about the people who shout out at acoustic gigs. STFU and let them get on with it, it's not about you just because you've got a chance of them hearing you. As for the talking during Glen's set, I do think it was mostly noise from the bar at the back and from the bar through the doors by the front, so it was a shame it seemed to annoy him so much.

    Totally awe struck

Last night was stunning. It's hard to find appropriate words. But it lived up to everything I hoped it would.

    Perfect in every way.

So happy there's two more to come ..... I could watch that every night

Sure the crowd had a few idiots - and way too many going for beer every three songs but that doesn't detract from the stage and the show we got

    Wow

    This.

Amazing show. Really loved seeing Long Road. Yeah, people talking during a gig is annoying. It's not really that much of a shock that things start @ 7:30. To quote Roger Waters: "If I had my way, I'd have all of you shot..." :)

Sorry, but are you kidding about Ed dedicating songs to his friend(s) that have passed away, he's every right to and he's just letting us all know he's thinking about a loved one that he's lost, which I think we should appreciate him sharing with us.

As for the disrespectful crowd during Glen Hansard, I agree, please be quiet and respectful to others who want to watch him. If you don't want to watch him then go and have a drink and chat outside the theatre. The band always say what great fans they have, let's show them they do as I'm sure Ed wouldn't be happy with his fans displaying that type of disrespectful behaviour.

    Amazing Night. Amazing Set
I was annoyed with the Merch stand situation. I got into the venue at about 7.05 and was only a few rows back from the counter so i thought i would easily grab my t-shirt and take my seat....45 minutes later i had missed Glen's set

I was sat 3/4's back in the stalls and got pretty hacked off with the amount of people that can't sit fucking still and HAVE to go and buy a drink 3 songs in..come on guys, you've paid £50 just sit and enjoy rather than blocking our view!. As mentioned the bar being at the back is a nightmare because if you are unfortunate enough to be sat near the back all you can hear is bar banter..

Anyway groans over.. loved hearing songs like Off He Goes, Sometimes was amazing, the most beautiful part was when the whole rear of the room stood up for a sing a long and then everyone was on their feet for Small Town..beautiful. Speed of Sound, The End and Long Road were emotional.

When Glen and Ed sang together it was like listening to angel's,...i could of listened to that all night

Crazy Mary was a nice ad lib (like hearing eddie thinking out loud 'this might work...')

I hung around the stage door until 1.40am not believing Ed had left (heard that one before!) but he had. His production manager came out and gave the last few of us a 'BatVed' pick each and apologised

Still, an awesome privelidge to see Ed in a tiny venue close to home. HAPPY :)

I waited 25 mins in the queue for a t-shirt... and simply gave up. How many were manning the till? only looked like two people from what little I could see!

  • 3 sometimes 4. Trouble is people wanted to pay by card; they had 2 chip and pin heandsets that couldn't work at the same time. should of had a cash stall and a card stall. I got my shirt and the merch girl said 'is that it'?..i said yes and she nearly kissed me as i'd only ordered one shirt and had cash.

Got abit hacked off when EV's merch guy was taking pics of the crowd when he surely could of helped with some cash sales. feel like i've missed out on not seeing Glen because of a t-shirt
