pivot works fine. I tried to vlookup a table that is about 16,000 rows by 171 columns against a table that is about 7,200 rows and 171 columns. oops. seems to me that if I can concieve it, excel should be able to handle it.

I've created some things in excel, like purchase orders, but I'm not like playing with hundreds of thousands of numbers.

did you forget the false at the end
nope. I always use that. stupid excel.
i just created some fake data and my vlookp worked just fine
=VLOOKUP(A5,Sheet1!A:GC,173,FALSE)
=VLOOKUP($E3,'[2013 Budget Comparison.xls]sheet1'!$A$2:$FO$7843,AM$1,FALSE)
and then I tried to paste that into 16,209 rows by 169 columns, which is 2,739,321 cells.
it didn't like it.

weird. did excel crash? i can see it bogging down. that's a lot of calculating.
