Waters v. Gilmore

I think the latter years of Pink Floyd, along with Waters' attempts to prevent Pink Floyd from continuing without him are what leave fans with a bad impression of him.

It was well known that there was a lot of in-fighting, but the way he treated the other members (Wright, in particular) sounds quite shocking. Wright's confidence took constant batterings from Waters, to the point where he was fired from the band during the recording of The Wall (by whom, I'm not sure.)

Funny fact actually - because, on The Wall tour, he was hired as a session musician, he was the only one out of the band to make any money from it – the rest of them lost a lot due to the cost to produce the shows!

I started off by favouring Gilmour. I really like latter day Floyd (probably because P.U.L.S.E. is what introduced me to the band), and disliked Waters even more when I heard he had given Gilmour a rather nasty response at the suggestion they let bygones-be-bygones… (Covered in the song “Poles Apart”, I think…)

However, I have come round to Waters since then, after I watched his “In The Flesh” tour DVD, which is fantastic. He seems to have changed a lot recently, and seems like a much nicer human being… Albeit still retaining what makes him… him!

I’ve been lucky enough to see all of them in concert at some point, alas, not all 4 of them together (Waters/Mason, Gilmour/Wright, Gilmour/Waters/Mason). Unfortunately, there will never be another Pink Floyd reunion without Wright, in my opinion.

I don’t think I could choose between them nowadays. I WOULD probably say Gilmour, but only if he makes a re-appearance with some new music, or a new tour or something! :-)

I guess I'm in the minority here but I will take team Waters any day. He was the dark and disturbed personality of PF and that just makes more interesting music.

Not when you don't have the musical ability to be that interesting.

Dewie - I generally agree with your posts but not here. Roger has come out with some fantastic material and what he is doing with The Wall tour is simply amazing. Amused to Death is A+ stuff. I have seen Floyd (The Wall 1980), I have seen all Roger solo tours, all Gilmour solo tours, Pink Floyd after Roger and The Wall 2010 -2012. Without Syd there is no Floyd. After Syd there is no Floyd without Roger. Gilmour enhanced and there is no Floyd as we know now without the combined talents of either man. Enjoy the two individuals for who they are and what they were when together.

Gilmour/Wright is the Pink Floyd sound to me and most likely any other fan of the classic Floyd lineup. I realize Waters is a the chief songwriter and visionary and a highly talented individual. You may be right, No Syd/Roger, no Floyd but I probably wouldn't care if there was a Floyd without Gilmour and Wright. When I think of Floyd I think Gilmour's guitar and voice, then all those great textures and melodies from Wright.

    Barrett

    Winner!!

Honestly though I couldn't compare Gilmour to Waters...I love them both for completely different reasons. I think that they both have had amazing solo careers. If you're into grand and epic theme records, Waters is your guy. He's amazing at concept records...I think Radio K.A.O.S. is pure genius. Gilmour has also written some beautiful songs and is an incredibly talented guitar player. In terms of Floyd records, I love them all for what they are. I've seen both of them live and have to say they that both of their shows are up there in my top 5 of all time. They're both brilliant - and they know it. Too much ego in one band was just recipe for disaster, but when they were on, they were fucking on!

I have to admit though that the solo records I listen to most from any Floyd member are Barrett's.
