thanks for the well wishes - keep em coming through tuesday!!!
i survived, but that's simply b/c my demo got postponed. :x
i've spent most of today on LIRR/NYC subway and waiting around penn station, and 45 minutes in school central office. ends up there was some "incident" today, so the dean of the school had to take off, the school got short-staffed with coverage, also overbooked demos apparently, so i wasted time and $20 fare for nutthin'.
bit frustrating BUT, i did learn how to get there and yes, most definitely a BAD area. good news though, super easy commute. train into penn, subway right out of penn, direct to the school, and by the time you get that far north in the bronx, elevated tracks - which make me feel safer as a single female - and also the school is literally right outside the subway, not even a minutes walk - so very, very easy.
sure, there's police in the school lobby, but the school itself pretty nice/clean, and the students i did run into, polite overall. so, i think i am definitely interested. found out 2 more art teachers are teaching demos next week. now, if it is the same two (and only others that i could see) from the job fair, i feel i might have a shot. they both definitely have urban teaching experience, which i do not - one of them at least 12 years worth. most schools want you to have at least 2 years urban experience, but this school didn't offer that caveat, and with that experience comes a much higher paycheck. sooooooo, if they want a cheaper teacher, they'd go for me. i have ten years experience, but outside the public sector, so they don't have to pay for my experience, which is fine. so i am hoping that perhaps that might give me a leg up. we shall see. kids could still scare me tuesday, who knows?
overall, i feel better about the situation, so yes, i might actually want this! fingers crossed all goes well either way. so keep those good vibes comin'!
It was good you had a practice ride over there on the train. That was like your dress rehearsal. Now you know how to get there, you know what the place looks like, and you're not going to be as worried about that external stuff on Tuesday.
The joy of life comes from our encounters with new experiences, and hence there is no greater joy than to have an endlessly changing horizon, for each day to have a new and different sun.
the demo went GREAT today. kids were overall into it, the faculty/principal who observed seemed impressed with my presence, style and classroom management. it seems to be quite a nice school community. certainly has it's urban issues of course, but all that i met seem truly happy to work there, and overall, students seem at least semi-engaged, haha.
i don't want to speak too soon, but given the feedback from some of the teachers, who observed/i met with, and from the principal, i think i may well get offered the position. if i do, i plan to take it. seems a really involved arts community, very supportive administration and while in a not good area, at all, it is oh so convenient a commute, subway literally right outside the front door of the school. seems win-win to me, and finally, a full-time public school job! committee meets on wednesdays and then reference checks, so hopefully hear something one way or another by the end of the week. i am truly hoping to know by friday.
i'm just excited by the idea of finally, finally, having a REAL job prospect again - and once actually based on all my education and experience ... a true, new direction, even if i'ts returning to something i did 7 years prior, haha, but this would afford FAR more opportunity for me. so, *fingers crossed* all works out.
yay! congrats d2d...fingers crossed in anticipation for an offer!

would be awesome timing too - unemployment all gone. hahaha. yikes.
seriously, i've been trying oh so hard to get back into teaching this past year, so you bet - hope it works out. come september i may think, wtf was i thinking?! but really, it's what i know and love best - so i welcome the challenges.
i got that down.
EVERYone is going to test me that first year especially, so will definitely have my work cut out for me, and then some! but to finally have a full-time public school gig, well, what i always wanted ... and to finally get out of this professional RUT, so welcome. the only thing better would be a big lottery win, but given the unlikelihood of that, this works.

i heard from one of the teachers/hiring specialists today via e-mail, asking for my list of references. hahaha. i gave the principal the list last tuesday at her request, and had even followed-up with an e-mail verifying my references expect to hear from them. so much for internal communication. :P either way, means they haven't even started yet. glad she contacted me though, b/c now i know not to sweat it too much if i don't hear from them until the end of the week or beyond. either way, i definitely feel they are interested so i do feel quite hopeful. fingers crossed!
