Unfortunately, this kind of 'tourism' was starting to get a bit out of control. A lot of the 'tourists' do not have the same kind of lifestyle attitude (for lack of better words) of the Dutch and it was starting to cause problems.

I have seen Amsterdam change so much over the years as more and more young people came just for this purpose (and the red light district!). A bit like the lager louts and their stag week-ends in Prague, etc. All of this is good income, but also 'destruction'.

Though the ban starts in the southern provinces so there is still a bit of time to visit A'dam! ;)

The same thing happened to the Haight Ashbury district in San Francisco. By the time I found a place I could afford in the upper Haight in 1971 the whole scene had changed there. Everybody and their brother and sister had moved in but the flowers in their hair began to wilt rather quickly. My daily walk down to Cole and Carl to catch the N Street car could be a real hassle some days. Talk about people with tombstones in their eyes! The seventies were an awful decade for that district (and much of the city as a whole). Places like The I-Beam helped make it interesting again in the eighties but by the early nineties a sort of pseudo hippie facade had taken over the place with lots of touristy "flower power" shops moving in. It's kind of a mixed bag these days.

So it will be interesting to see what happens to Amsterdam. It wouldn't surprise me to hear of several changes similar to what happened to the Haight.

this law will be taken to the european court of human rights because it goes against the competition rules from my reading of it.

i think it will get overturned as the e.u. is built on the freedom of movement

Me too! Good 70s-era memories there.

I don't think the general response to this has been the filling of one's bongwater with their tears, Mr. Speedy McSourpuss  Seems like it's more about the business/tourism side of it.

When I visited 25 years ago, I didn't even hit the cafes. Moseyed around the red-light district, had a stupendously delicious and hospitable dinner, and toured the Anne Frank house (more valuable to me than anything else there).

I also tried on oversized wooden clogs.

(For what it's worth, there are many issues we chime in on, even if they're taking place across the globe. Locale doesn't determine opinion.)

At least we don't spend time dismissing other people's discussions for no apparent reason. Yours is not a very worthwhile post, I gotta say. And for me the issue is whether or not a place can create laws to treat people in a discriminatory manner, and that is a pretty worthwhile point of discussion to me! I think you're missing the poibt a bit.

Ten percent of tourists who visit Holland do so exclusively for the pot. The cafes do $2.6 billion in business a year, generating $503 million in tax revenue.

Why is the government shutting all this down?
The conservative-led government elected 18 months ago is sick of the country's reputation as a haven for drug tourists. The city of Maastricht, bordered by Germany and Belgium, was being overwhelmed by tourists driving in strictly to buy marijuana. And production for the cafes led to a thriving black market, turning Holland into a major drug supplier for the rest of Europe, Ard van der Steur, a Parliament member and a spokesman for the ruling People's Party for Freedom and Democracy, tells The New York Times. "We have created an incredible criminal industry that we need to get rid of."

    There ya go....
    I was wrong....
90% of the tourists arent visiting strictly for the dope.....Not 98%
