Where should I start, I've heard only a few tunes (Two Daughters and Ronnie & Neil) and really liked them, so can you recommend some other songs or an album to start with.
Thanks

For an album I'd suggest 'The Dirth South'. It's pure awesomeness!

Starting with Dirty South, Southern Rock Opera, or Decoration Day are all pretty safe bets. I'd go with Southern Rock Opera though, it's a great intro to Patterson/Cooley, who are the principal singers in the band and it's the album that brought them national attention. Jason Isbell was in for a few albums (Decoration Day, Dirty South, Blessing and a Curse) and his contributions are really strong too.
"You're no help," he told the lime. This was unfair. It was only a lime; there was nothing special about it at all. It was doing the best it could.

This is great advice... but don't wait too long to hear The Big To-Do or A Blessing And A Curse... which are two of my personal favorite DBT albums.

But I would say for a first jump, go for Southern Rock Opera or Dirty South. Dirty South is actually the record that pulled me in.

Also, their Live in Austin, TX album (which is from Austin City Limits) is a stunning live record.

The Dirty South....then maybe check out the greatest hits record...or the aforementioned Live from Austin City Limits...Southern Rock Opera, Decoration Day, Brighter than Creation's Dark....as a live band, they are tough to beat.

I recommend starting with these three:

    Southern Rock Opera
    Decoration Day
    The Dirty South

If you like these, you will probably become a fan. If you don't, then you won't become a fan.

Also...see them live. As others have said, they're a great live band.

If you're into bootlegs, there's a lot of DBT ones up at Archive.org

Now that I'm there, I'm pulling down the 7/29/2004 show.

I gotta chime in hear as a now casual/most likely future big, big fan.

I really love everything about Southern Rock Opera. I like bits and pieces of stuff from the rest of their albums, but that one just floors me.

Recently caught A Secret to A Happy Ending and it gave alot of incite into their band dynamic and the history of the band. Hoping it jump starts a new wider appreciation for them.

I still need to see that film.

Keep giving their other stuff a fighting chance, it will grow on you I'm sure. They're too great in their performing and songwriting abilities to not breakthrough.

Mike Cooley is a fucking badass.

Great stuff indeed....there was an EP worth of live songs from the 40 Watt available on iTunes once upon a time

New Patterson Hood single available to stream on Rolling Stone website called "Come Back Little Star".

    Enjoy.

Great band. I listened to them for the first time in months the other day with The Big To-Do. Such a great record.

Also, I just picked up a copy of Booker T. Jones' "Potato Hole" which features DBT as the band backing up Booker and his keyboard on the instrumental record. Again, a great record. If you're into instrumental stuff and can appreciate some wicked keyboard playing, check out Booker T's stuff.

  • Just listen to their entire back catalogue (including the Patterson and Isbell 'solo' albums). If you stick with just the popular albums - as great as they are - you will miss awesome tracks like The Living Bubba, Margo and Harold, Zoloft, Buttholeville, Bulldozers and Dirt... I could go on.

My favourite band of all time barr none... Even my honeymoon was based around their songs. Going back to the South in January to catch the Homecoming shows at the 40 Watt. Really looking forward to seeing Patterson with Craig Finn in November too
Been to this many PJ shows: Reading 2006 London 2007 Manchester & London 2009 Dublin, Belfast, London, Nijmegen & Berlin 2010 Manchester 1 & Manchester 2 2012...

... and I still think Drive-By Truckers are better.

they should do a tour with jason asap

Love the name of Jason's current tour: "Stop Fucking Around and Play Outfit"

Anyone seen Patterson on the current tour? I'm really tempted to go, but it happens to fall on my wife's birthday. She has no interest in going, but has given me the OK to go without her. Not sure if I'll regret that decision in the long run though

Hey Grandmas Jam. I live in Fairfield so right in your neck of the woods. I just bought tickets today to see Jason Isbell & the 400 Unit in Cambridge, Hartford, and NYC this December. We can carpool if you are going to any of these shows and our schedules don't conflict too much. It's not DBT but is also a great show. As you know, Jason was in DBT from 2001-2007.

I saw 2 shows last month. You should try to go as it's a great show. Get there early as the opening band Hope For A Goldensummer is also excellent.

Thanks, that's what I figured. As many times as I've seen DBT live, never seen a solo show by Patterson or Cooley.

Just found out that Patterson's set at Hardly Strictly Bluegrass will be webcast today at 3:20 PST too:

Following the departure of Shonna Tucker around this time last year, her partner John Neff has now left DBT. I guess being stuck in the middle of an acrimonious split wasn't going to be easy. He's going to be in her new band Eye Candy. Great timing though with the band having a 3 night run at the 9:30 Club in DC and then the Athens run in mid January.

Wonder who'll come in to fill the void?
