I used to ride and had a helmet save me once even though I didn't have the chinstrap hooked ... believe you me, after your head smacks a curb at 50 mph and your helmet goes flying off as your skidding down the pavement, you begin to realize that taking the extra 3 seconds for safety isn't the huge inconvenience you sometimes make it out to be.

i think it should be your right to wear or not wear.....
that said....i see so many clowns riding helmet less with the helmet attached to the bike. i'll never understand that. :fp:

Why? It's not the government's role, is it? They're not responsible for my actions, I am.
If I can't save (or educate) myself, why should the government?

well using your same logic why should the government put people into care when they decide they are not able to look after themselves because of mental illness.
I think helmets are a great idea I also think any rider under 25 years old should have to use a helmet but after 25 I think it should be a choice, I rode for years with out a helmet and when the law kicked in here in california I was pissed.
I remember reading an article about doner %'s dropping sense the helmet law in calif. kicked in...not that it's something to use as a argument for helmet laws but it was just weird that that was one of the side effects of the helmet law, kinda creepy.

Good question on the government's role in that scenario; I'd have to give it more thought.

I don't think the state has a role to protect us truly from ourselves, with the caveat that we are mentally capable of doing so. It is the state's job to protect us from others.
In the more specific sense, State's have the ability through the idea of police powers to implement all sorts of laws like seat belt laws, helmet laws...all of that stuff...I just think they should show restraint and only pass laws that protect the rights of individuals from others. Other public policy stuff not withstanding of course.

At the same time, cars and workplaces are getting safer all the time so we need to get organ donors from somewhere.
