The commercialization around Christmas and Easter is terrible. As a parent and Christian it is my job to inform my child the real reason behind the two events.

    Happy Easter Everyone!

    Herd consumerism.
Let's all go and buy chocolate eggs and bunnies.

There were lines out the shop door on Saturday, people buying chocolates from the confectionery store at the local shopping plaza.

My mum attempted to chastise my brother in law yesterday for him not going to church on Easter.
I chimed in with ''not all of us are angels like you".
Room fell silent, my niece giggled.

In spite of my desire for my kids to understand the "true meaning" of Easter, we also celebrate the commercialized version of Easter. In my mind, they are two different things. I am not giving my kids peeps because Jesus was crucified.

Yeah, there's never any "herd consumerism" around here. By the way, I just made a batch of "Special Edition" Chocolate Easter Bunnies, only $75 a piece. Special White Chocolate version soon to come, get your wallets ready. ;)

If people want to line up for chocolates, or go on Easter Egg hunts, or whatever, no reason to bash them. I'm sure people look at us Pearl Jam fans as a crazy "herd" of folks. Happy Easter to all you Christians. Haters gonna hate.

I love all holidays and the traditions that go with them.

I remember Easter as a kid 50 years ago, hunting for our very creatively hidden baskets.
My sisters and my giant stuffed bunnies, each a different pastel color, mine green,
with a a funny smiling rubber face that I chewed the nose off of.

Dying eggs and the money hunt I would score big in cause I the youngest
got up early and spotted out all the half dollars ahead of my sisters

Then I think of the traditions I passed on to my kids and we reminisce
    each year our memories.

We aren't Christians but we celebrate love and the gift of life.
I think Jesus would like that ... :D

ya ... gf wanted to paint easter eggs ... and then i had to hide them ... well, what was news to me was that "hiding" meant putting them out in the open ...:lol: ... apparently, taking half an egg shell and covering it over a painted egg and putting it in the egg box was evil ...:lol:

I think any event that brings families together for a day can't be all bad. Be it religious, pagan, the honor of past wars, or that one day in November when America feasts to celebrate the NFL, it's all good.

Stuff yourself, have a few stiff drinks, and then claim refuge on the nearest couch.

I am teetering Catholic - I have a lot of trouble with the Church and not really a whole lot of faith anymore. Seemed like the church was making headway a few years ago, talking about protecting the planet, but now they're back to the contraception shit. I really don't want anything to do with it. Anyways...

My understanding is that Christmas was a Christian co-opting of the ancient Pagan Winter Solstice Holiday, or the celebration that the days will be getting longer from here on out. Even in Catholic School we knew that Jesus wasn't born on 12/25. So I celebrate Christmas however I want, with a Pagan decorated tree and Santa Claus and toys and plenty more crap that has nothing to do with Jesus. If you have a problem with that deal with it. I'm a Pagan taking back my holiday. ;)

Maybe Easter is a similar thing with spring and the rebirth of nature - haven't thought about it to the same extent.

I'm not mad at all. My post was partly tongue in cheek. Although the Hallmark holiday thing is what offends me, not the actions of individuals. As I say, it is like taking Ramadan and selling tickets to the fair to celebrate it. Greeting cards, Cadbury's, the people who make that plastic grass stuff ... I don't like the commercialization of religious holidays. It seems wrong to me. That's what I'm talking about. I am not offended by the reliousness of it. I'm offended by the LACK of religion! (Of course I say merry Christmas and bless you as well!). I think you misunderstood my post. :) and not hating.. if my post came off actually mad I need to work on my writing skills. But Easter is still weird!

I'm an Atheist, and I'M offended by what Easter is (at least in North America).

I'm not a religious person, I guess I would be labeled Agnostic if push came to shove, but what's the point of being offended by other people's beliefs? If it's not your thing, that's fine, but why does it offend you?

You just need to relax and not get mad if somebody wishes you a Happy Easter, Merry Christmas, or says God Bless You after you sneeze. They're not trying to convert you, they're just being friendly the way they know how. If somebody says that to you and you feel the need to confront them with the fact that you're an atheist, that's your problem. It's your problem that it offends you. Most of us can let that sort of thing roll down our back and take it as somebody just being friendly and not as an opening to start a religious debate.

Yeah, I get it. Not against people having fun. But why not have bunny/egg day, and leave Easter to Christians who care about the most important day of observance of the year, to pray and shit?
In Canada most provinces already have or are moving towards an official stat called Family Day. Just a day for families to spend together, and no commercialization of religious observances! Seems like a good idea to me!

Oh you are speaking to the wrong old lady, I love the holidays and all the traditions.
I cherish them actually. I love both sides ... the life of Jesus and the history that goes behind
    the holiday traditions.

    Commercialization :? ...
is really how you look at it and what you choose to do as an individual,
one person's commercialization is another's giving.
We went through this with the pooh pooh at Christmastime.
I give presents ... lots of them! I enjoy being generous with those I love,
it is not a chore nor obligation... its fun!
That might not be for everyone so don't do it then.

I see no reason why fun and religious can't mix on the same day!
I actually think Jesus would like to see everyone having fun, enjoying each other
and giving what they want to give, what they love to give.
If that's jelly beans so be it :D

I think if Jesus was around this would be the very least of his worries.

I haven't read all the posts so this may have already been asked - but do you have children? I too am an atheist so Easter to me is just a 4 day weekend, I also don't get the bunny and egg association, especially here in the southern hemisphere where its autumn. What I do get is how much fun going on egg hunts with my children is. The Easter Bunny comes to our house but we don't buy anymore chocolate, we got the kids books this year. Everything has been commercialised to death - my kids have no idea where the origins of easter or chirstmas come from, to our family it is about spending time with the ones we love.
all you need is love, love is all you need
