I moved from Seattle to San Jose (biggest mistake of my life-but that's another story).

loaded up a 24' U-haul, and flatbed trailer for the car and drove, thank goodness there wasn't any snow in the Siskyous. Unloaded the truck and returned it.

I would recommend selling as much of your shit as possible and rent a truck, if you can afford to buy new furniture in AZ, ask mca what the prices are like there (he's from AZ right?) I didn't sell my stuff because stuff in Cali is crazy expensive.

I do know people that moved from NY to Montana, the movers broke a bunch of valuables, and well, movers weren't responsible. So yeah, I don't trust anybody to pack or move my valuables.

Oh yeah. He does come back today. How long until his first post after the ban is lifted? Actually he will probably read this and out of spite wait another week to post.

Getting rid of stuff has always been a problem for me. I guess chalk that up to my Italian upbringing. Even if it works out to be the same as selling my furniture here and buying new stuff in Phoenix vs. transportation costs of transporting the old stuff I would keep my old shit.

Seems to me that imalive had some horror stories about movers.

    god, do I ever....

maybe it was just us, but cross United Fucking Van Lines off your list right now! I have nothing good to say about those motherfuckers. It was a nightmare on both ends. A guy in nice khakis and a corporate logo shirt will come to your house and blow smoke up your ass.......and then, when moving day arrives, the remaining members of the Manson family will show up at your house to do the move. They will most likely be fresh out of prison and/or off the street corner.

they only broke one little insignificant item but, damn, it was an ordeal. I would suggest self medicating before the ex-cons arrive.

Looks like getting a POD is your best choice...you already have a place in AZ?

No. Is that a problem?

Actually plan on going out there later this month to try and find somewhere. Problem is I need 3 bedrroms and at least two baths and a two car garage. Should be an easy apartment to find.

I've been told by someone I know through my stepdad that houses in Arizona are quite affordable at the moment, ones that might accomodate the room you need. The same guy just bought one down there, so take it for what it's worth. I've seen pictures, it's a nice looking house... but it's in a new neighborhood with nothing around it, a dirt yard, etc...

you don't need a yard (grass) in AZ...just throw around some of that red lava rock shit...

Yeah, I was going to say that the dirt is probably a good idea just so you're not overwhelmed with caring for a lawn in such a brutally hot climate.

Kudos to you for moving to Phoenix dude. I've experienced Georgia, Florida, and Utah summers and I would still be nervous to spend a summer in Phoenix.

I bet air conditioner companies make a killing in AZ.

  • I have never, but a friend of mine is moving to Seattle from AR (lucky girl). They are selling everything that is easily replaceable and packing the rest in a Uhal. I've also wondered about those pod things, can't you pack those and have them shipped? I am not sure, but you might want to at least check into it.

I have made a ton of really long moves. Moved in and out of Alaska 3 times from various places in the lower 48 (S. Florida, Boise, ID, and most recently, Atlanta) and even did one international move (from Anchorage to Moscow, Russia). If there is one thing in this world I know how to do, it's major-ass moves.

I really like that PODS idea - that's the way I'd have gone this past time if my current company wasn't paying for most of my move. Moving companies are really expensive, and in my experience, the guys on the trucks are so much about time that they ruin a lot of your stuff. This past time, they would not let me pack my own books, for example...but when I unpacked the boxes, the books had just been thrown in there, some books inside others with the pages all bent and torn, etc. It was a mess. Better to do it yourself - especially when it comes to stuff in boxes.

Sell as much as you can before you go...donate stuff, etc. Except for books/DVDs/Electronics/music collections, etc, most stuff is replaceable. If it's really nice furniture, take it...but if it's junk, get rid of it. There is more junk in Phoenix to replace the junk you have. Or you may want to splurge when you get there and buy some nice new furniture.

The most important piece of advice I have, however, is this:

Pack a box of stuff you will need on the first night in a new home - toilet paper, a shower curtain/rod/hanging hoops, towels, shampoo and soap, a bottle of Advil (you'll need it!) pet dishes and food, some picnic-wear (plates, plastic silverware, cups, etc), a sharp knife, some paper, pens, etc - anything you think you might need but which might be a PITA to find in a sea of boxes. Mark this box very prominently and put it in the truck LAST. Take it off the truck first and you are good to go! I even put my coffeemaker in this box, as that is an essential item for me....but your mileage may vary.

Oh...and there are companies who will haul your vehicles cross-country for you. I shipped a Jeep Cherokee from Atlanta to Anchorage via the port at Tacoma back in Sept. If you want the name of the company I used, let me know and I'll look it up.

The homes are quite reasonable in the Phoenix area yes but I have so much on plate I don't want to add searching for a home to buy into the mix quite yet. I think I am going to look at leasing a home however. The housing situation is so unfortuante out there right now that a lot of new or very new homes are just sitting unoccupied. I drove through a neighborhood two years ago that I would have thought was built just to film a movie. Seemed that every house either had a foreclosure/for sale/for lease sign in front of it. Wait...why am I doing this again???
  • I saw a commercial on CNN for PackRat movers. It is one of those deals where they drop of a container and you load /they transport.
I might go to Bruce in Smallbany next week.
Which hotels hotels are near the venue ?
I will be coming from the north on 87. Will there be congested rush hour traffic around 4:00pm ?
    Thanks

get yourself a uhaul and a trailer and force people you know in the area to help you load it....

    drive your ass cross country...

get mca to help you unload it

or if you want, get the uhaul loaded, give me gas/hotel/food money and i'll drive it cross country and you can fly.

Coming south on 87 into downtown at that time you should be fine. The closest I can remember would be The Crowne Plaza. I have stayed there before I moved to Smalbany and it's right in downtown and maybe a five minute walk to the Times Union Center if that far actually. Sorry it took so long to respond.

I don't think I could be more frustrated than I am right now. Very difficult to find an apartment with a two car garage (which is a necessity) and why the fuck do all these apartments in the Phoenix area have such big porches and/or balconies? Who the fuck wants to sit on a porch looking at another apartment building? :fp:
