So I am moving across country. It's an Albany to Phoenix move. The furthest I have ever moved was 80 miles and I had movers. Has anyone here ever made a long distance move and have some suggestions? Some of the issues are I have a lot of furniture and some is quite heavy so I need movers. Are there cross country movers? My vehicle is an AWD 4Runner and can't be towed...it needs to be flatbedded or put on a trailer. Just very confused on how or where to start the process. :? Thanks.

I used to work for the Interstate Commerce Commission and we regulated interstate movers. Trust me, you want to read this info I'm giving you. Movers are now regulated under DOT, Congress eliminated the ICC in 1996. But there are definitely things you want to know before hand.

    https://www.protectyourmove.gov/

get at least three estimates from movers and go with the one in the middle, it's most likely the most accurate.

and the final cost will depend on the actual weight of your household goods, so remember, the estimate is just that, an estimate. At the time of delivery, you should only be responsible for the estimate price, plus 10%, the remainder is due in 30 days (if my memory serves me right)

    good luck

yes, look at United Van lines and Allied moving companies. ANY company you look at , check with BBB about them. Many will sub out part of the work. Go with a "name" company , it should be safer.

No, there are some good companies out there, you just need to do your homework.

oh and it definitely might not be a bad idea to have a garage sale before you move, remember, you will be paying for the weight of your shipment, if you don't need it now, or use it regularly, I'd try and sell it

My aunt just moved from Florida to Pennsylvania and she used ABF. They bring a trailer to you and you load it up. This way it's packed the way YOU want it and YOU brace all your valuables. They then come and pick up the trailer and take it to where you want it go. And then YOU unload the trailer.

She also used Mayflower in her move from Pennsylvania to Florida and they go by weight.

So it just depends on how you want to do it. But if anything....DO YOUR HOMEWORK ON THEM

dude, you are signing a contract to have unknown persons transport EVERYTHING you own. Of course you should check as many resourses about these companies as posssible.

I'm debating renting a U-Haul truck and one of their trailers...packing as much shit I can fit and towing my truck. What I debate is if the fuel costs/effort are close if not more than hiring someone else to drive it. Fuck.

The pros to that are that you'll be responsible for your own goods.

The cons are that you have to do a lot of the labor, and the transporting of it.

We rented a U-Haul for our move from Atlanta to SLC... towed a Honda Civic behind it. It was pretty successful barring the fact that my girlfriend had the brilliant idea to pull the e-brake on the trailered Civic. That was a fucking nightmare when we decided to take it off when we stopped in St. Louis to use it to go get some grub as opposed to driving the big ass truck with a hitched car. Aside from that, it was nice not having to coordinate with a moving truck and making sure it arrived on time, undamaged, and all that after someone else's handling. I liked being responsible for everything.

We made the move in the fall (late October) of 2008. Fuel costs were lower, but getting through Wyoming and it's unpredictable weather and conditions at that time of the year was a real motherfucker with the big ass truck, and the towed car behind. Mind you, I had very close to no experience driving a vehicle of that size before then. You don't have the winter thing against you, and you also could probably avoid Wyoming, depending on which route you choose to take.

If you want my two cents, I'd do it myself. But, I guess it all really depends on how concerned you are with the overall cost.

Best of luck on your move.

I was reading something about this a while back when my brother was moving. Supposedly there are laws/regulations in place to prevent a moving company from holding your shit hostage. This was apparently rampant back in the day, a company quoting you a price then after they move all your shit jacking up the price and refusing to give it back until you pay. So I don't think you have to worry about that specific problem, but I'm sure there are other ways to possibly scam you. Or just the simple act of a bad apple working for the company stealing one of your belongings.

I don't know how good it is, but I've seen commercials for PODS, and other portable moving companies. They basically drop off a storage unit in front of your house, you load it up and lock it up yourself and they just transport the thing wherever you want it. This way no movers are handling your goods, or have access to them. It's locked up and they just haul the container. And if one isn't enough you can have multiple containers.

That's probably the way I'd go if I were moving across country.

If you can afford it, this is a great alternative too.

Yes, there were a lot of companies that would try and hold your HHGs hostage, but that's when we used to intervene (ICC). As I said, back then, you were only responsible for 110% of the estimate price at the time of delivery but some companies would demand payment in full and that was illegal. But it didn't stop them from trying.
