the falling slowly duet with eddie is amazing. :)

Damn! His guitar is worn to hell. Looks nice though. :D

That is the guitar his mom gave him way back when.

There are some great Frames songs, and some not so great. On the whole, I think the songwriting is better with The Swell Season. That's all.

I would recommend the following of his:

    Swell season is very good

The 2nd album: "strict joy" is ok, but not as good as self titled.

From what I have of the Frames, I recommend:
    The cost
    Fitzcarlado
    Burn the maps.
    Dance the Devil

The cost, Fitzcarlado, and, Burn the maps are probably my faves of his: in that order.

To get a good taste of him live though:

    setlist.

To me, both acts are very unique....Swell Season is more sappy and melancholy, while most of the Frames song are more rocking, full of energy.

The set he played last year on the EV tour was more on the darker side...he even mentioned that fact when I had a brief chat with him at PJ20.

  • The once Soundtrack. and both Swell Season records. The Frames albums-For the Birds, Burn the maps, The Cost. And Glen's soon to be released solo debut record. If you arent familiar with Glen's friends as well, I'd give a listen to Colm Mac Iomere a guy in the Frames band. Ive seen this song performed twice in concert. One of those mindblowing moments. The sounds reverberated off every surface in the venue. Unreal.

For glen approved stuff, but stuff he isnt a part of- check out:

check out 0 and 9 by Damien Rice. Friend of Glen's and one of the best songwriters of our generation.

Lisa Hannigans 2 solo albums-former vocalist for Damien, friend of Glen.

Marketa Irglova the female in Once and in the Swell Season has a solo album but I havent given it a listen yet.

Skip the Frames. Get both "The Swell Season" albums. Fucking great.
    that's crazy talk.

Frames >>>>> Swell Season material. It's the same band plus Mar, but Mar brings down how dynamic the shows are.

i disagree, she certainly has her own style, and the frames and the swell season are great for how different they are. people responded to the swell season and once for a reason, and it was the two of them together glen and mar. but yeah, the frames are totally different. completely different band and vibe. But equally cool.

Start with 'Fitzcarraldo' by The Frames, then their last 2 albums - 'Burn The Maps' and 'The Cost'. Their last 2 albums are their best ones, only Fitzcarraldo matches the quality.

Then there's the 2 Swell Season albums, self-titled and Strict Joy. Strict Joy is better, in my opinion they gel together much better and the music is much more varied.

If I just had to pick one album each to start with, Fitzcarraldo and Strict Joy.

the man is one intense singer and guitar player. I enjoyed him on Ed solo tour 2 immensely, to the point if he played locally I would seriously consider going.

Worth the extra hour for sure!

Do the same for Glen that you should do for Eddie...sit down, enjoy the show and don't yell crap at him! I saw him for the first time opening for Ed last year, and I love his music.

Yes, thank you, very good direction.
  • Just from listening to a couple of Glen's songs....seems very similar to Ed in guitar style. Like double strumming - or whatever the technical term is for it - Like Ed will strum two, four, or maybe up to six super quick strums when the song would normally call for one strum.

Millworker is a great example of this for Ed. I noticed similar tendencies in a couple of Glen's songs. I really like the effect it has on some songs and I think it helps compensate a little for not having a full band. Gives it an extra little beat or something.

btw, thanks to all of you for the direction and recommendations.

  • I said this in another thread:

For Glen newbies I think the best albums to go to are:

Setlist (The Frames) - this is essentially a live Best-Of which showcases just how incredible The Frames are as a band - song tips: Revelate, Stars Are Underground & Santa Maria

Once Soundtrack (Glen Hansard & Marketa Irglova) - this is Glen (and Marketa) stripped down and acoustic - song tips: When Your Mind's Made Up, Leave, Falling Slowly

For the Birds (The Frames) - this album has been best described to me as the 'heart' of The Frames - song tips: Lay Me Down, When the Heart Just Stops, Disappointed

Fitzcarraldo (The Frames) - really top notch songwriting - song tips: Say It To Me Now, Monument, Your Face.

Dance the Devil (The Frames) - just great, great tunes - song tips: Perfect Opening Line, Star, Star, God Bless Mom.

A great site for more live Frames and Glen stuff is:

Please do check out more Glen and The Frames - you will not be disappointed :D

Glen is AMAZING - make sure you get there early
