Yes, watch "Once"... and also listen to any album by "The Frames" ..

Also.. just download the song Say it to me now by Glen hansard.. and you will understand his raw performance style.

The two PJ20 setlists were absolutely hilarious and partially improvised(first day in particular! WOW)

  • Fitzcaraldo by his band The Frames. Especially the song Revelate. Classic

Playing guitar at a house party about 13 yrs ago. In walks glen with a bottle of moet. Really nice and unassuming lad. Delighted he got this far. See his first limelight appearance in the movie the commitments as outspan

Ah yes, Panties in the Fountain :). I went to the shows last year knowing nothing about him and was blown away. Definitely make sure you don't miss his opening set.

If Ed's last tour is indicative of what's in store for this tour, prepare to be blown away with Ed & Glen singing "Sleepless Nights" a capella - that is to say, using NO MICROPHONES. You could hear a pin drop in the theater while they were singing, when I saw them in Portland last year.
Ed...buddy...pal...stay true to your word and play Boise again.

I only saw him on Sunday at PJ20 (the only EV solo show I've seen was in 2009, with Liam Finn & Eliza Jane opening), and Glen was amazing. Funny stories, great songs, a snippet of "Smile" (which he would later join Pearl Jam to do that night), and yes, his "Falling Slowly" duet with Eddie was magical. Just a wonderful afternoon show.

... and yep start with The Frames album Setlist. It's their live album so you also get an idea of Glen's storytelling and the power of his performance :D

    Good choice with Setlist.

Besides Astral Weeks, he does a fantastic fucking cover of Into the Mystic.

Even though I prefer The Frames over The Swell Season, make sure you watch once. SO good. You can't go wrong either way.

Glen is awesome!! I don't always watch the opener, but you can't miss Glen!! Awesome performance!
Falling Slowly and Sleepless Nights with Ed is amazing.

I'd go to the show and not worry about a crash course...he has a huge catalog, so even if you sample some stuff, he may not play any of those songs.

IMHO, it is sometimes cool to be exposed to an artist in a live setting, and then go buy the studio stuff afterwards....this way, you first memory of the song will include both sound and vision.

I do love Glen Hansard though. Can't go wrong with Frames or Swell Season

I would recommend the following of his:

    Swell season is very good

The 2nd album: "strict joy" is ok, but not as good as self titled.

From what I have of the Frames, I recommend:
    The cost
    Fitzcarlado
    Burn the maps.
    Dance the Devil

The cost, Fitzcarlado, and, Burn the maps are probably my faves of his: in that order.

To get a good taste of him live though:

    setlist.

To me, both acts are very unique....Swell Season is more sappy and melancholy, while most of the Frames song are more rocking, full of energy.

The set he played last year on the EV tour was more on the darker side...he even mentioned that fact when I had a brief chat with him at PJ20.

  • The once Soundtrack. and both Swell Season records. The Frames albums-For the Birds, Burn the maps, The Cost. And Glen's soon to be released solo debut record. If you arent familiar with Glen's friends as well, I'd give a listen to Colm Mac Iomere a guy in the Frames band. Ive seen this song performed twice in concert. One of those mindblowing moments. The sounds reverberated off every surface in the venue. Unreal.

For glen approved stuff, but stuff he isnt a part of- check out:

check out 0 and 9 by Damien Rice. Friend of Glen's and one of the best songwriters of our generation.

Lisa Hannigans 2 solo albums-former vocalist for Damien, friend of Glen.

Marketa Irglova the female in Once and in the Swell Season has a solo album but I havent given it a listen yet.

i disagree, she certainly has her own style, and the frames and the swell season are great for how different they are. people responded to the swell season and once for a reason, and it was the two of them together glen and mar. but yeah, the frames are totally different. completely different band and vibe. But equally cool.

Start with 'Fitzcarraldo' by The Frames, then their last 2 albums - 'Burn The Maps' and 'The Cost'. Their last 2 albums are their best ones, only Fitzcarraldo matches the quality.

Then there's the 2 Swell Season albums, self-titled and Strict Joy. Strict Joy is better, in my opinion they gel together much better and the music is much more varied.

If I just had to pick one album each to start with, Fitzcarraldo and Strict Joy.
