apparently england has not learned anything...

Lynndie England, jailed for Abu Ghraib abuses, says she doesn't feel bad about how Iraqis were treated

Lynndie England, who became the face of U.S. military abuses overseas for her role in the Abu Ghraib scandal, says she doesn’t feel bad for detainees who were subjected to torture.

“Their lives are better. They got the better end of the deal,” England told The Daily, a news publication for the iPad, from her home in Fort Ashby, W. Va. “They weren’t innocent. They’re trying to kill us, and you want me to apologize to them? It’s like saying sorry to the enemy.”

England was sentenced to three years behind bars for her role in the abuse scandal.

She appeared in several of the best-known photos taken by U.S. guards at Abu Ghraib, including one image in which she held a naked prisoner on a leash; in others, she posed with a pyramid of naked detainees and pointed at one man’s genitals while a cigarette hung from the corner of her mouth.

At her trial,England said she appeared in the photos at the behest of Pvt. Charles Graner Jr., who she said took advantage of her love and trust while they were deployed in Iraq.

According to the Daily, England lives with her parents, is unemployed, has suffered from PTSD symptoms and is haunted by her past. She told the news publication that Graner has refused to acknowledge their 7-year-old son, even though his paternity was proved in 2009.

The 29-year-old added that she was troubled by the fear that her actions may have caused the death of members of the U.S. military. "That’s something that falls on my head,” she told The Daily. “I think about it all the time — indirect deaths that were my fault. Losing people on our side because of me coming out on a picture.”

I was against the war, and I find how we treated prisoners of war sickening. But you have seen how they treat our guys when captured right?

This is nothing compared to that. I'm not saying that to defend what happened to these men at all, I just don't like the notion that they wouldn't treat our men and heaven forbid our women the same.

There are atrocities and injustices happening on both sides in this fucked up situation.

Again, let me say, I am not defending or agreeing with her at all. I think she's despicable.

Yeah, I've seen it. We're **apparently** the good guys, spreading freedom and all that jazz. They're the **bad guys**. We should be held to a MUCH higher standard.

people tend to lose sight of who the aggressor is ... i don't see arab countries invading other countries ... it's sad ... the US/Britain has brought war, strife, suffering and devastation to the middle east and people want to point to the people defending their land as enemies ...

no, we should have treated the priosoners in accordance with the geneva convention.

abu ghraib is a black eye on our military and our government and i am really pissed off about what occurred there.

as someone said earlier, we were supposed to be the good guys in this. we should sure as fuck have acted like it. we should have actually been the example that we portray ourselves to be and we claim to the rest of the world to be. instead we were no better than those that we claim as enemies.

    I'm saying we should either:
    a) Treat prisoners humanely
    b) Stop pretending to be the good guy

again, how can anyone in this day and age, pose for photos so controversial. To begin with, her acts were deplorable and she should be heavily punished...but to be so stupid as to pose for the camera?!?!? come on, this is an embarrassment to the USA, and she got off easy. She should be apologizing left and right.

'Lynndie England' apparently feels she did nothing wrong...Why should she apologize? I bet in her mind she thinks that the people she abused should be the ones apologizing to her, 'left and right'.

3 years? What a joke, people spend more time in jail for non violent weed related crimes. But it's not even just about time spent locked up, rather the amount (if any) of rehabilitation one receives while 'away'. Just locking people up tends to be a waste and rarely (I feel) corrects any problems, at least not at their 'cores' which is where it starts.

How sad and sickening that she's not embarrassed or apologetic by her actions. Those photos are etched on so many people's brains and for a long time to come.

What she and the other soldiers did was stupid, harmful, vile, etc etc etc...

But... I was never in the military or in any situation remotely like that, but I can't honestly fault her for feeling that way. When you see your friends getting shot and blown up everyday, I think it would be impossible not to develop an irrational hatred for those who you view are responsible for it. And while a lot of the people in those prisons were innocently rounded up, some of them were the ones responsible for IED's and stuff like that.

The soldiers were put in a terrible position, asked to do things that were impossible to do. So many of them, years later, are still struggling to cope with the things they've seen or things they've done. I can't imagine how screwed up of a situation that they were put in for months on end.

Those are good points and I can agree with you to a degree, but these people signed up for the military full well knowing the possibilities. And with that, they are representatives of the USA. This caused major backlash and had the potential to hurt the US immediately and potentially in the future. it causes more hate towards the US and likely perpetuates future disdain. It was sheer stupidity and lack of professionalism. Again, if you're gonna do that shit.. don't pose for a damned photo!

Also, I know there are some less than intelligent people in the military, but where were the people in charge? there were several people doing these terrible things at that prison. Nobody stepped in and said it was wrong? or at least suggested they put away the camera?!

its good to look at it form your other perspective though. But I cant let that justify how stupid this was...and how embarrassing I felt as an American when I saw those photos.

That is a key point, I think. Granted, everyone should "know better", but the higher ranking people should have had more control over it.

she did not see combat. i am wondering how many of her friends in her unit saw combat. she was a guard at a pow prison.

    she is brainwashed.

she was instututionalized that the prisoners were sub human.. that is what they do in the military. they dehumanize the enemy so its easier to kill them without thought or remorse. i am guessing it is easier to torture and abuse them without remorse as well...

Would you also apply this logic to WWII and say that nobody except Hitler deserved punishment? The einsatzgruppen (execution squads) who roamed Eastern Europe murdering Jews and dumping their bodies in mass graves were all innocent of any crime simply because they happened to have superiors and obeyed orders?

Sorry, but the excuse that "I was just following orders" was dismissed at Nuremberg and holds no credibility whatsoever.

Lt. Calley should have been imprisoned for life for what he did at My Lai in Vietnam, and Lyndsey England should also be banged up for a long time.

If people who 'merely follow orders' are all innocent, then Americans should apply that same logic across the board and release every single prisoner from Guantanamo Bay and every prison in Iraq and Afghanistan today.

Or is it only American murderers and torturers who deserve this special consideration?

american exceptionalism also translates to "above international law, and we follow all laws of society except for the ones we choose not to..."

if this case wre tried at the hague she would have gotten a real sentence, and the "following orders" defense would have been tossed right out of there..i guess you can make justice when you pull all the strings, and we pull all the strings...
