I'm getting married in a couple months and have a bunch of stuff to pay for, including our honeymoon. I could really use some extra cash and am contemplating doing something I might regret: I'm thinking about selling my entire collection of PJ vinyl. I've been collecting PJ records for almost twenty years now and have a pretty complete collection (never did get that blue Vs though). I've never even imagined I'd consider selling it, but times have changed and like I said, I really need the cash. I have no idea what it would be worth, but I'm pretty sure I could pay for my honeymoon with it.

I haven't even mentioned this to my fiancé, because I already know what she would say... "sell it!" Someone tell me how stupid I am for considering this. Hell, lambast me like I know some of you can! Worth it or not?

There is, but I'd rather keep it off the credit cards.

Priorities change. If you're still getting use out of them I'd suggest going a different route but if they're all just collecting dust and you're holding onto them to collect them then I say sell em and let someone else enjoy them.

    Good luck with everything.

I agree with this person. Although two things to consider- eloping and using the visa and paying it back with money you get from the wedding.

If the wife and I had our time back we would have eloped and had a small gathering for family and a few friends. I know its all about the woman on that day, but really, spend all that much money for a couple hours?

Not worth the stress nor money.

    I don't know...selling all of it for a honeymoon?
Maybe it depends on how much you value PJ and what they are/mean to you?
Personally, I would never be able to get rid of my PJ stuff...
Maybe there are other options you can look into? Don't jump on it right away and explore other options/possibilities! Maybe there are other things you can sell. :)

Do whatever needed not to put things on credit cards if you cannot pay them off right away. CCs are the conduit to evil through which the banks can take advantage of people's lack of foresight. Good for an emergency, bad for things that are not emergencies.

Maybe put off the honeymoon until you can both save for it? Take a few extra days off before the wedding and have people come in early so that families and friends can all be together....at a very minimal cost.

My turntable's been broken for a couple years, so the whole collection has essentially been taking up space in the closet for a while now. Many records are still unopened, so it's just become collecting for the sake of collecting.

As far as eloping goes, that's a brilliant idea. People told us to do that before we started planning. I was up for it (at least a very small, inexpensive ceremony) but she wasn't. After countless arguments between her and her mom and way-too-many thousands of dollars spent, she now agrees, but it's too late. Oh well, should be fun either way...

Thanks for the help! Sounds like there will be some great records being offered here in the near future (although I still need to think long and hard about this before I actually pull the trigger).

They have a very deep, personal history with me. But the reality is that priorities in life do change right? I do enjoy the idea of passing things along down the road to people who can enjoy the stuff I've worked so hard to collect over the years. I don't know. This is gonna take some serious introspection!

I'll always have my personalized autographed poster to hang on the wall...

HELL NO!! don't sell them...and do you really want to marry her if she's ready to sell all YOUR shit? <~~~~just kidding about this. my girl constantly wants to have a yard sale with all my stuff...tools, camping equipment, old toys, and i have no emotional attachments to these items. i'll get rid of my tools when they stop working!
i'm guessing you're near your 40's...so even if you don't spin them now, soon you'll slow down and just want to kick back, have some beer, listen to some good ol' rockin' roll, and reminisce of the places you've been. By then it'll be classic rock, PJ will be in the rock of fame and you can share the music of one of (if not thee) the greatest American rock bands EVER to the younger gen. so what ever you decide, good luck bro.

    $20 for No Code!

I'm 31, just got into them at a pretty young age. I remember being in the eighth grade and my older (cooler) neighbor telling me about Pearl Jam... That's where it all started. Then he told me about this super cool record I should get- Jeremy on white vinyl. And I was hooked.......

You make a great point. I'm beating myself up over this! Thanks for all the help.

And no, you can't have No Code for $20.

I've been there... I sold most of my collection in the late 90s to help family, and I regret it because its so expensive to get stuff back. But it had to be done and if I didnt sell it then other problems would've happened so its an impossible thing to reconcile looking back on it.

That said... you have to do what you have to do. I know that sounds so cliche, but if you need it for the honeymoon you should probably consider it strongly. It's an important time in your life and you won't want to look back and wonder how much nicer it could have been if you sold some of the vinyl, or regret putting it on CCs to pay for it.

There's no good answer to it and no right/wrong answers, but I hope whatever choice you make works out for you.

if they're something you enjoy then don't do it... because getting married is going to end most of what you enjoy anyway ;)

if you have good credit then pay for the honeymoon on one credit card... then open a new credit card and transfer it over at 0%

if your credit sucks then this obv won't work

    good luck
  • If you have to ask then don't do it.

There are very few things I would sell my PJ anything for...my childrens education, health care are a few off the top my head.

I convinved my hubby to sell something he had for a while, and the look on his face when he shipped it :(
    I still feel guilty.

We got married in 2010 and are just now taking our honeymoon this summer...to Amsterdam...and seeing PJ there. Haha. My parents still haven't taken a honeymoon and they've been married for 30+ years.

My point? Don't sell this stuff to take a honeymoon now. Go the route of "let's save up to take the trip we want to take" rather than "let's sell shit to take the trip NOW." Plus, planning for a wedding AND a honeymoon can only be more stressful. On top of that, you might end up regretting selling the stuff for your trip and the last thing you want attached to any part of your wedding/marriage is regret. ;)

My advice: save your PJ stuff and save for a delayed honeymoon. Totally worth it. Who knows? Maybe if you spend some time saving, your 2013, 2014, 2015 etc honeymoon will include an international PJ show!

  • It seems like you're trying to get people to help you justify your decision one way or another. Reading your original post, if you are already talking about regret then I think you have your answer. If you do sell it then you have to let it go. There can't be any regrets. I say this from experience. I sold some shares of stock to buy my wife her engagement ring (it was only $1600...I was slightly poor at the time). That stock was at roughly $10 a share at the time in 2005. Last time I check it was worth $55 a share after a split. Long story short my share would have been worth roughly $20k had I held onto them. But I didn't and my wife has a ring that she loves and just knowing I made her happy is what matters to me. This is going to sound cheesy but material possessions come and go but your memories of you wedding an honeymoon, and loving your wife and seeing her smile will last longer than some wax in a closet. No regrets.
