Bertha-the Big Money Pit

So...they decided to tear down the Viaduct here:

and put in a 'deep bore tunnel':

and put in a bunch of parks:

Even though people repeatedly vote down the tunnel and want to re-build the viaduct, the city still went with the tunnel (the tunnel costs more than a re-build).
I've always wanted the re-build, they are going to take away lots of parking under the viaduct, and that drive along the waterfront is beautiful....simply amazing.
The news is doing some segments on 'The Big Dig' and how Boston feels about it...the news can be subjective. Tell me how do you really feel about that project. The news did point out that the project went over budget by billions.

The joy of life comes from our encounters with new experiences, and hence there is no greater joy than to have an endlessly changing horizon, for each day to have a new and different sun.

I know unlost is pissed she has to 'drive around' because flammables aren't allowed in the tunnel...

I want REAL thoughts...not some pompous journalist's views....thanks for playing.

i'm sure you read this already.....
big dig has to be one of the biggest jokes in american road building history.
The Big Dig started when I was a kid and in many ways, is still going on. The politics in Mass are ridiculous. They "finished" it and then a panel came down and killed some poor woman. Then a sink hole opened up the size of a swimming pool. Every time I drive thru the tunnel I get nervous I'm die. Fun stuff.
That is what I'm afraid of...they said 'we will re-enforce the sea wall' but, I'm not so sure of that. Every time they expand or build a new road near the water (any body of water), usually a sinkhole appears because it rains here so much. Then the 'only road' is closed while they try to fix it.
People already are scared to drive the viaduct as it is, one good quake, and down it goes...I figure, at least you have a chance to run...you're stuck in a tunnel.

The BIG DIG refers to you flatlander, bubble butt Bostonians digging your fork in to a 10,000 calorie plate at Quincy Market
There is perhaps the World's most useless monorail in Seattle though!
Pre-Big-Dig: It would take me at least 50 minutes to commute to my destination approximately 8 miles from my home, because the only option for me was one two-lane tunnel that merged onto the Central Artery, which was the old elevated section of I-93 that ran through Boston north/south.
If there was an accident on the Central Artery, or a breakdown in the tunnel _ add more time.
During The Big Dig: I prefer not to recollect how painful commuting was when you'd go to work one route, then they'd close sections of the tunnels and/or highway, or offramps, or onramps, and you'd have to drive miles out of your way to get home.
Post Big Dig: My daily commute is now 30 minutes, door-to-door (barring accidents or other unforseen circumstances.) It's 15 miles to work now. Pre Big-Dig I probably would not have taken this job, because it would have taken me upwards of an hour to get here.
And it is a GIANT pain in the ass that I have to haul my travel trailer through downtown Boston on surface roads, or go literally 25 miles out of my way, because I can't take it into any of the tunnels due to the on board propane tanks.
:x
they have been trying to put in a light rail system for years! Tacoma has the Sounder so peeps can train it to games, and it goes to the airport, but it's a lot of "I don't want light rail in my back yard" and a bunch of businesses and residents that refuse to sell/move.
Downtown the bus system is fine. If you live on the eastside (Redmond/Bellevue/Kirkland) the bus sucks...apparently if you live there, you're too rich to take the bus.
Seattle has actually spent more money pushing the tunnel project instead of just going ahead and building it (for the last 10 years or something). I think they've spent enough on fighting over a tunnel or re-build and could have already re-built it already.

I love the monorail. Faster than taking the bus from Seattle Center to Westlake and about the same price, I have walked the route...once, and that will be the last time.
It is considered a 'historical landmark' so they won't tear it down.

It's 1.2 miles long!
it was built for the World's Fair...so basically a Disney inspired 'People Mover' :P

There are roller coasters that are longer than that!
i don't do bridges or tunnels very well
in tunnels i am freaked out as well as i am freaked out while driving over a bridge. i can't win.
