Dave Matthews rip-off on American Idol

check this guy out. it's such a blatant rip-off it's almost obnoxious. he was even more like dave matthews during hollywood week doing the exact same strange leg moves that dave does when playing. the guy is an exact dave clone from the voice, to the guitar playing, to the mannerisms. he's obviously studied dave's performance tendencies.

what is really irritating me is that this guy keeps getting through...and he is being praised for being 'original' and 'fresh'. this is the opposite of originality, though he is certainly doing an amazing job at mimicking. not one person on the show has called this guy out yet. have none of the judges every seen or heard dave matthews perform? what gives?

also a funny thing to note...just out of curiosity, i went to the dmb forums to see what they are saying about this guy. it's mostly positive stuff. like they are happy to finally have someone with talent on idol, and many plan on watching idol as long as this guy is on. i don't get it.

i guess this is a major difference between pearl jam heads and dmb heads. if some guy went on idol mimicking eddie vedder, people here would be relentlessly bashing the guy until he was kicked off of the show. my guess is there would be many people on this board who would be seriously pissed off that this guy was on tv copying our guy and getting credit for it.

dave fans on the other seem to really be embracing 'phil phillips' as one of their own. i just wish this guy would come out and say "i want to be dave matthews". at least his teeny bopper fans would really have a sense of what they are listening to in that case.

one of my favorite parts is when jennifer lopez says "he's like a little james brown" while he's playing. how you watch that and think 'james brown' is beyond me.

That was one of the most blatant rip offs i've ever seen. I agree with OP, guy had no originality. I bet the judges realized that too, but its whatever makes $$$$. american idol is the worst show to hit the US in history.

Maybe he can get a gig in las vegas as a dave matthews impersonator.

I'm pretty sure that Sarah Palin's Alaska and The Hasslehoffs are worse. It has produced 3 huge female acts. I'm not a fan of them but it has.

yes. either that or he should just start a dave matthews cover band. he would be PERFECT for that.

as for idol, yeah, it's all about $ and ratings. but it's certainly not the worst show in US history. i happen to really enjoy it actually. especially with DVR. i've yet to purchase any music from an idol 'artist', but from an entertainment standpoint, it gets the job done. vocally, some of the contestants are actually pretty amazing.

Jennifer Hudson has lost alot of weight and Kelly Clarkson fluctuates, but she's far from huge.

The dude's a lame ass. Reminds me of the people at shows that sing along and take it way too seriously.

How did the judges not pick up on the Dave Matthews thing? I also watched a little bit of his take on Superstitious - it was even worse.

Phil is awesome ...very cool young man ... very polite

man he really feels the music ... from head to toe... reminiscent of a young Cocker
hoping he makes it to the top 12

oh and its just a talent contest... no guarantees on stardom

no guarantees on talent either but the kids can really grow on ya!

    if you let them :D

what bothers me about this show is how sometimes they will totally not credit the actual songwriter and instead credit the more famous performer of it. when someone will do Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah they'll call it "a Jeff Buckley song" and when some guy did This Woman's Work they called it a Maxwell song, not even mentioning Kate Bush..

Yea 3 "huge" acts that are just replaced by the next american idol winner. Other then kelly clarkson, who cares about any of the other winners? Hell, who even gives a crap about her anymore? They're all just puppets to the music industry producing horrible music.

these kids are someone's talented children... many grew up watching Idol
from young on ... dreamed ... worked towards a goal
their families believing in them all the way

this is what comes through during the season,
the family and friends loyal support and love for each contestant

the growth of each contestant from the experience ... a once in a lifetime experience

the hopes and joys and dreams come true

it is very heartwarming if one gives it a chance and if they enjoy having their heart warmed
  • i really didnt get a hint of dave on this one. He does remind me of my college days and students outside the dorms with their guitars, or in the dorms with their guitars playing tunes with others. Definitely has a college frat boy vibe to him

I know you're a fan, but Jersey Shore has got to be a contender for that title as well man. That show has just as much value, if possibly less, than American Idol.

  • and i dont think being original is any part of getting on these shows. How many female vocalists on these shows are influenced by janis joplin, or aretha or beyonce or mariah or pink or britney, or kelly clarkson, or whoever? how many of the male singers have the same sort of singing style as daughtry? or are influennced by commercial rock music?

i dont really think we can get away from our influences.

as i said walk near some dorm during april or may, and see a bunch of kids congregating outside on benches with guitars singing and playing jack johnson, and dave songs.

Whatever you guys think about the "rip off" I commend the guy for going for it. Really, why the hell not?
Most of the people on that show begin by looking or sounding like some one else anyway...The real magic is when they find their own style throughout the competition.
Thank you fellow 10 clubber for saving my ass....again!!!

I agree. It's a karaoke contest. But the kid is actually talented and *I'm guessing* highly influenced by Dave. I don't think he "ripped him off".

yes music speaks to us ...
influences even those who are unmusical ... to have the gift though and share it is magical :D

these kids just want to share it ... just have to

some of you are being a bit sensitive if you ask me.

yes, this guy is someone's talented child. everyone is someone's child, so i'm not sure i understand the point. and for the record, while he may be young, this 'kid' is actually an adult and should be treated as such. when you make the decision to put your talents up to be judged on a platform like american idol, you are opening yourself up to criticism. that's all this is.

musicismylife - "i didn't really get a hint of dave on this one" - REALLY!? you can't be serious. you are the only one. besides the panel of judges who have apparently never heard dave matthews.

as for all musicians having influences...yeah. well that is certainly true, but this goes way beyond that in my opinion. this isn't a subtle homage, or just a similar playing style...this is an exact clone. this is like an elvis impersonator singing non-elvis songs as elvis and acting as if it's his own style. following? one thing that eddie vedder and dave matthews have in common are very distinct vocal deliveries. they are so unique that you really can't borrow from them without ripping them off. scott stapp failed miserably at this. this guy actually seems like he's spot on with his imitation, but what is irritating me is that dave matthews has yet to get credit for it. and it goes beyond vocal delivery. mannerisms, facial expressions, outfit, you name it. it's just too similar for me to write this off as merely an influence.

and for anyone thinking that this has no relevance regarding american idol, you're wrong. just a few years ago there was a guy they had on who thought he was jim morrison. much like with how phil phillips is channeling dave matthews. he sang the same, made the same faces, had the same mannerisms, and wore similar clothes. the jim morrison clone got called out on it more and more as the the competition progressed until the judges finally gave him the axe. the week before it came down to audience votes if i recall. all i'm asking is that this guy gets the same treatment.

as for the show. this wasn't a thread meant to bash american idol. i obviously watch it and enjoy it or i wouldn't have seen it to start this thread. i actually think they have some good contestants this year. the dave matthews kid is just getting on my nerves with his stolen style. that's all. maybe if he was a little more outspoken with his love for dave matthews it wouldn't bother me as much...we'll see though, maybe he'll be gone in a couple of weeks. i just don't see that happening with all of the praise he's been getting.

funny I can't tolerate Dave Mathews music and I really like Phil

    hmmmm

but we sure haven't seen that much of him and the kids grow so much
throughout the show, it is always fun to watch the progress

what about the very deep baritone duet now that was cool 8-)

Im ehh about that show now. 5 seasons of the same crap gets old. But I disagree. Everyone realizes jersey shore is a trashy show. Its not trying to be a quality show. American idol is much worse because they act like its such a great show but its really just an easy way to make more piss poor pop music to shove down our throats. they're taking people with good voices and turning them into mainstream crap. I would never want to sacrific my style for some shitty record label endorsed by american idol.

  • i honestly dont see the comparison to dave at all. his voice doesnt sound like daves. the only thing they have in common may be the dress attire, sandals and an acoustic guitar and looking like a college student. If anything the guy on AI is closer to a jack johnson type than dave.
