  • Yeah it's hard to believe quite how long they've been away for really.

Saw them live in '03 just after PJ had toured. I actually enjoyed the show, though back then they only had one album out so we didnt get to hear anything off the later two (obviously). Like all the stuff they did. Chris's voice was in fine form.

Haven't been that lucky face. Have been 'with' the band since Screaming Life came out but that's about it... records only.

I only saw them once, at Reading in '95, at the tender age of 13!

Aaarrgghh... I remember that Reading - Soundgarden, Neil Young, Foos, Mudhoney, Skunk Anansie (and others).
I really wanted to go but had new baby, etc. (yeah... I was a bit older than 13!). And here I was thinking 'maybe next year'....

Different strokes for different folks. But Rico, I'd be interested to hear what you dislike about Soundgarden? I am just curious; I respect your opinion.

What a line up for the Sunday, there must've been very serious a reason for me not going to this, wish I could remember what it was.

  • I loved audioslave. still do love those records. it was the first time i got to see cornell live. in a very small club right after the first record was released. I had always been so bummed that i never got to see cornell w/soundgarden then was floored when i got to see him in such an intimate venue.

the thing that always amazed me about audioslave was how just 4 guys could produce SO much sound. if you notice on every one of their records the write...everything you hear was performed on an instrument (guitar, vox, bass, percussion). Cornell's voice alone in my opinion is a high powered instrument. Teaming him up with guys who play their instruments in a similar style was explosive.

Agreed about producing so much sound. Tom Morello, while not being a virtuoso type talent, has one of the most unique playing styles ever.

Anyone familiar with at least one Rage and one Audioslave album could pick out Morello's sound like a sore thumb. He's definitely distinct. I think that's kind of a trait that Tim shares too.

Isn't there a disclaimer on Rage and Audioslave albums that says something along the lines of "all sounds created with vocals, guitar, bass, and drums"

Also, I'd contend that Morello is a virtuoso. The guy can shred, he just doesn't use it a whole lot. He was on That Metal Show and he said when he was at Harvard, when he wasn't in class he was in the woodshed. At some point he started really honing in on what made him different from other guitar players, and in Rage he served as the DJ/noisemaker and that's kinda how his style developed.

Reading 95' looked awesome. Blind Melon too.

There are a few albums that are 10 years old this year that make me think 'where did that time go'? By The Way, One By One, and Riot Act are some of the others. I remember seeing the 'Cochise' video back on MTV2 and remember thinking how great it was. That intro with them heading up in the lift and the fireworks brings back memories. I love 'Getaway Car' especially Morello's solo. I wish I had got to see them live. Would love to see Rage too. Soundgarden......hopefully soon.

'Out of Exile' I actually enjoyed and that takes me back to a certain time too. 'Heaven's Dead' is great. I remember the break-up been a bit of a surprise but maybe those guys just belong with their original bands.

Was listening to this record today, which I think is fantastic, and had a thought.

This November will be the 10th anniversary of this record. This album is one of the first rock records that really became something to me. A lot of the songs remind of certain memories, some vivid, and some more broad... like a small era in my young life. I love this album and it's a strange feeling to have a record with that type of impact on you, that you remember being released and gaining momentum, reach it's 10 year anniversary.

I mention this show a lot, but it's because it still is one of the best and memoralbe I've seen. I got to see Audioslave in 2003 at Lollapalooza. It was a long, hot fucking day in the Utah summer out at an amphitheatre with no natural shade. 13 hours we were there and a thunderstorem interrupted the show. They asked all of the audience to return to their cars and come back to the amphitheatre when the rain stopped (it was a pretty heavy rain). My brother and I were dropped off and had no car, so we sat in seats and embraced the rain as it came down on us. It felt like it was washing away the tiredness of my body.

When the show started up, nearly the whole crowd moved towards the floor in front of the stage, including us and the only two acts left were Audioslave and Jane's Addiction. An unbelievable show by Audioslave... something I'll never forget. Chris's vocals being top-notch, Tom Morello playing the guitar like a fucking madman, Timmy C's bass that you could feel in your body because it was so loud, and Brad at his drums... back to the crowd, seeing us only in a reflection of the gigantic mirror that was the back drop for the stage. Their little flame logo, made of the same reflective material, was suspended above the stage. Whoever was working the mixing board that night deserved a promotion, I had never heard live music that good before.

I smoked a joint for the first time that night and sang and rocked with a bunch of stangers. It was the first time at a concert that, to me, the crowd felt as one.

Great memories, a great fucking rock show, and still a great album 10 years later.

This post is much longer than I intended, but like the show, I got into the moment.
Try having the first album that meant something to you turn 30 next year. ugh. ur a pup. ;)
Audioslave were alright...I'm of the "sum does not equal it's parts" camp, but I dug their live show, and the albums were above average for sure...

I just can't really get into them. I think most of their music is kinda the same and boring. Lyrics don't really seem anything special to me and Cornell just doesn't impress me that much.

I watched a programme last night on the Apache chief 'Cochise', very interesting it was and it's the very reason I'm blasting the first Audioslave album this morning, prancing about the kitchen pretending to be the bastard lovechild of Chris Cornell and Tom Morello, probably not a good idea when you're a 43 year old with a bad back :D

If anyone is interested and didn't know (like me) it seems that Cochise was Geronimos father in law, you learn something new every day, eh.
