"Audioslave" - Nearly 10 years later

Was listening to this record today, which I think is fantastic, and had a thought.

This November will be the 10th anniversary of this record. This album is one of the first rock records that really became something to me. A lot of the songs remind of certain memories, some vivid, and some more broad... like a small era in my young life. I love this album and it's a strange feeling to have a record with that type of impact on you, that you remember being released and gaining momentum, reach it's 10 year anniversary.

I mention this show a lot, but it's because it still is one of the best and memoralbe I've seen. I got to see Audioslave in 2003 at Lollapalooza. It was a long, hot fucking day in the Utah summer out at an amphitheatre with no natural shade. 13 hours we were there and a thunderstorem interrupted the show. They asked all of the audience to return to their cars and come back to the amphitheatre when the rain stopped (it was a pretty heavy rain). My brother and I were dropped off and had no car, so we sat in seats and embraced the rain as it came down on us. It felt like it was washing away the tiredness of my body.

When the show started up, nearly the whole crowd moved towards the floor in front of the stage, including us and the only two acts left were Audioslave and Jane's Addiction. An unbelievable show by Audioslave... something I'll never forget. Chris's vocals being top-notch, Tom Morello playing the guitar like a fucking madman, Timmy C's bass that you could feel in your body because it was so loud, and Brad at his drums... back to the crowd, seeing us only in a reflection of the gigantic mirror that was the back drop for the stage. Their little flame logo, made of the same reflective material, was suspended above the stage. Whoever was working the mixing board that night deserved a promotion, I had never heard live music that good before.

I smoked a joint for the first time that night and sang and rocked with a bunch of stangers. It was the first time at a concert that, to me, the crowd felt as one.

Great memories, a great fucking rock show, and still a great album 10 years later.

This post is much longer than I intended, but like the show, I got into the moment.

I like Audioslave.....probably the only band I like with Chris Cornell.
    Tres Mts- 3/16/2011
    Eddie Vedder- 7/16/11
    Brad- 4/21/12 (RSD Performance), 4/27/12, 8/10/12
    Flight To Mars- 5/23/12
    RNDM- 11/27/12

  • a mix of blah, meh, and blech.

But that's the beauty of music, it's all subjective.

I'll always love Rage and Soundgarden a lot more, but I'll admit that I really like that first Audioslave album. "Show Me How to Live" was my favorite song on it.

Funny story. In 2002, some friends from college in Santa Barbara were driving down to LA to play on a local bands bill at the Roxy. En route, they got a call from the venue asking if they wouldn't mind pushing back their set time because another band wanted to play. They told them the band was of "epic proportions" but wouldn't elaborate further. It was Audioslave. They were playing for the 1st time in front of an audience that night as a warm up for KROQ's Xmas show a few days later. So, technically, Audioslave opened for my friend's band.

Saw them on their debut tour on the eve of the 2nd Iraq invasion. Needless to say, Morello was fired up. Went on to see them 3 or so times after, including Lollapalooza. Glad they eventually found their way back to their original bands though.
  • Audioslave mean a hell of a lot to me, mainly because they were the first band my wife properly got into with me, and came to gigs with me etc. Jan 2003 London Astoria was her first ever gig. Since then, she's come to all my PJ gigs (and others) with me as well :D Think Audioslave are still her fave, though. We bumped into and spoke to Cornell in London before the Brixton Academy gig, July 2003, which was cool.

I'm a massive Soundgarden fan, so obviously I'm happy that Cornell found his way home (especilly after the post-Audioslave shambles). But I really did like Audioslave, I thought all 3 albums were great to be honest, I think the last 2 get far more stick than they deserve... there are some great songs on both. I remember the day the demos leaked in 2002, I loved those from the start... I was glad Cornell was doing something after going quiet after Euphoria Morning, so it was an exciting time for a lot of people I think.

The short life of Audioslave is absolutely filled with a load of great memories for me.
  • I saw Audioslave in 2005 and it was easily one of the best shows I have ever been to. So many people left the arena with their jaws on the floor I have never seen a crowd so happy and amazed after a show before.

The album is fantastic but the 2nd was hit and miss and the third was forgetable really.

I haven't listened to them in a while so I may do today.

I"ve never been a Rage Against The Machine fan so I was a bit skeptical of Audioslave but after I heard Cochise on the radio, I checked out the rest of the album and was very impressed. Saw them when they toured for the album and it was a good show. Chris's voice held up fairly well. There next two albums didn't do it for me and I wasn't shocked when thy broke up.

First album is quite badass. Wanted to see them really bad til I saw the Live at Cuba dvd. What a horrible Cornell performance.

That initial spark must've been something magical. It seemed to carry them about half way through their second album, which had a great immediacy but not much lasting power. The last one should've never been put out.

Seemed like they had a pretty similar run to Velvet Revolver. Great first album where all parties were all in, followed by weak 2nd album where the singer got more control, followed by the singer checking out. Unfortunately that didn't stop Revelations from coming out.

Saw that tour too. Great lineup. Janes Addiction seemed like amateurs after following Audioslave. I remember Audioslave covered "Seven Nation Army" and it was fucking awesome!

Well said about Jane's Addiction. I love that band and loved seeing them... but going on after Audioslave was a bad spot for them that tour.

I do enjoy the 2nd record. Not as much as the first, but from start to finish, I can listen to it and enjoy it.

The last though was, as you put it, forgetable. I think I really only liked one song from it.

  • I don't think Revelations is as bad as people make out - Wide Awake may well be my favourite Audioslave song, there are a handful of others I like too.

I'll never forget seeing Audioslave at their Astoria show - we managed to get front row, and it was surreal seeing artists of that calibre up close. Even more surreal was when we saw them at Brixton, and Chris jumped down off the stage during one song and ran along the rail, when he got to me, for some reason he literally got right up in my face, nose to nose, then screamed in the microphone!

Saw them at the Roseland in NYC like 10 feet from the stage. Badass. Tom Morello is larger than life and Chris Cornell is, Chris Cornell.

Awesome story DC!!! I loved the first Audioslave album too..can't believe it's been 10 years already! I remember I had tix to see them but I couldn't find anyone to go to the show with :( In hindsight I wish I had just gone alone. I never did give the 2nd album a proper listen, gonna have to put that on this week!

Are you in this pic from the Astoria Jan 2003 gig? Cornell grabbed someone's camera and took this photo from the stage :D I recognise at least 7 people from back in the day in the front row, but by face only :/

Someone around here said somethin pretty similar the last time this came up so I downloaded it and listened through it. It might be worse than some people make out.

I'm not saying it's all good, but I think Revelations, Until We Fall, Shape Of Things To Come, Wide Awake and Moth are all good songs. I think you could make a decent album if you took the best songs from the second and third records.

Hell yeah! I'm doing Manchester day one, plus Amsterdam :D And of course any proper Soundgarden show, not sure I can be bothered with Download......

M1 for me too (only one :( ) Make sure you keep an eye on the meet up thread for before the gig! Not bothered with Download either.

Just watching a programme on Sky Arts - Metal Evolution. All about grunge tonight. Showing some good ol' Soundgarden. Aaaahhhh.... those were the years!

I just watched it too, really cool stuff - loved that bit of recent footage of Soundgarden playing Beyond The Wheel, Cornell sounded awesome! Have you seen Soundgarden live before?

Haven't been that lucky face. Have been 'with' the band since Screaming Life came out but that's about it... records only.

I only saw them once, at Reading in '95, at the tender age of 13!

Aaarrgghh... I remember that Reading - Soundgarden, Neil Young, Foos, Mudhoney, Skunk Anansie (and others).
I really wanted to go but had new baby, etc. (yeah... I was a bit older than 13!). And here I was thinking 'maybe next year'....
