Where would we be without the mighty Sabs? I have owned every MK1 Sab's album on vinyl, cassette and cd and there's not a day that goes by that I don't hear their influence somewhere. How the four individuals gelled and created such an innovative style of music still amazes me. They had a very organic and spontanious approach to songwriting and it still sounds remarkably fresh today. Much copied, never bettered! I am on a new appreciation surge right now and it really was the perfect soundtrack to my youth. There must be some admirers and possibly even haters here? What's your view, favourite songs, album, etc?

Yeah one of the best bands ever easily. I really consider them just the stoner rock/blues rock pioneers, by todays standards they aren't heavy imo.

Sabbath Bloody Sabbath always been my fave.

When we say Black Sabbath we are only talking about the real Sabbath, so yeah 1970-1979.

I DON'T THINK ANY PJ SONG IS BETTER THAN THE 19 MIN VERSION OF WICKED WORLD ON LIVE AT LAST

I can't get past hearing Tony Iommi in one ear and Geezer Butler in the other both going off on one for sheer listening pleasure. Like you say, stoner/blues rock and not really that heavy when you listen now. They really knew how to jam and I love the production and how it captured the era. I was tempted to drop PJ in Manchester for a Sunday Download ticket but decided against it in the end.

Tony's guitar tone was so raw and amazing back then, sounded so bloody great.

Yeah good choice, looks like it's gonna be 3/4 of Sabbath so won't count.

They were already done by the time I was old enough to go to shows....(the true Sabbath)....the first time I saw Ozzy all I kept thinking was 'Damn, War Pigs fucking rocks. I wish he was playing this with Sabbath!' and wondering what it must have been like to go to one of their shows in the 70s.
One of my most listened to records of all time is a Sabbath record. Pretty cool when I think that Paranoid came out about 4 years before I was born and that none of my direct musical influences (dad, bro) introduced me to it. Sort of stumbled upon it myself as a youngster and was totally blown away. Damn, that is a magical record.

Fucking lot of badasses is what they are!!! Had We Sold Our Souls For Rock and Roll forever before delving into their albums. I see where you guys are coming from about them not being that heavy overall, but I've still never heard anything heavier than the first song on their first album.

That atmosphere that they created with Black Sabbath with the church bell and the noise of the stormy weather still sounds really amazing and when the big Iommi riff tore it open it was like all 60's Brit-pop suddenly had some really unlikely competition. To me they have their place in 60's & 70's folklore alongside The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Rolling Stones etc on even placing. There are people who are still discovering this music and I envy them for it because for me it was great hearing those first four albums especially.

  • I've recently realized what a travesty it is that while I profess to be this huge fan of heavy riff rock I.....I.....I

    I can't admit it....

    no, look away....

......I've never listened to Sabbath. Like, I barely know any of their stuff. I know, it's a shame. However, I recently acquired their first 5 albums with the intention to spend some time getting to know them. Like the grandpa I never met. I do worry that though they were heavy and groundbreaking 40 years ago, today I might not feel the power, or the weight. I'm hoping to at least get an appreciation for Iommi's riff catalog.

If it bores me I'll just throw in some Queens.
  • Amazing band the first 6 albums are perfect , just 4 working class lads who made it big time.

Agreed. When I heard that for the first time is was hair standing on the back of my neck. I was looking at the album cover at the time too which makes it even more atmospheric.

Love Sabbath. Hate what is going on with Bill now though. I'd like to smack that Sharon...if she is the cause that is.

Three really, really wicked tunes among all their 'bigger' tunes.

Have seen Ozzy every chance I've had. Loved it when they have played the Sabbath tunes!

Hearing the Sabbath songs was always the highlight of an Ozzy show. I think I've seen him play Paranoid, Iron Man, Children Of The Grave, War Pigs, Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, Sweet Leaf and Symptom Of The Universe. Zakk Wylde always did a good job but the original solos are hard to beat despite Zakk's technical brilliance.

    Listening(squeal)to Zakk(squeal)(squeal) Wylde(squeal) play guitar(squeal) is(squeal)(squeal)(squeal) like(squeal)reading this sentence.

Awesome player early on and on the studio stuff outside of Black Rain, but he really jumped the shark as a player his last few years with Ozzy.

Another album that I got Sabbath fix early on was Speak of the Devil. Brad Gillis was the guitarist for that.

Agreed about Zakk Wylde, I think the more BLS albums he released the more intolerable his playing style became. He was great on the No Rest For The Wicked and No More Tears albums and tours and I've gradually gone off Ozzy's solo stuff since then. I think that Speak Of The Devil album is pretty good for fans of Ozzy who aren't too familiar with Sabs. Some really great versions and Brad Gillis did a fine job on it.

It's definately not the Sabbath I know and love but I do like those albums and everything RJD did with Rainbow. He had a stunning voice for such a small man.

Don't get me wrong, I love the Ozzy stuff and own all of them on vinyl and CD ( I remember buying the first album, 1st UK pressing, spiral Vertigo label in near mint condition for a song in Vinyl Villains on Leith Walk, I was over the moon that day, I still have it). It's just that I was a massive Rainbow/Dio fan at the time.

Indeed he did! I was lucky enough to see Dio, only once, on the Holy Diver anniversary tour in 2005. An absolutely brilliant night. I was supposed to see Heaven and Hell headline High Voltage in 2010 but we all know what happened.

Sabbath though, I love the first four and can't pick, but if I had to I think I'd go with 4. It's the one I play most, Supernaught was the first Sabbath tune I remember hearing and it registering, course I'd heard War Pigs and Paranoid etc but that came on the radio late one night and blew my mind.

I'd be all over a ticket for this tour but if it's going to be 3/4 only then I'll give it a miss. Someone should lock Sharon Osbourne in a padded room until the summer is over.
The secret to a happy ending is knowing when to roll the credits
