Also, saying "Please" and "Thank you" go a long way as well. Seems like it would be common sense, but you'd be surprised at the number of times I've heard, "Hey, gimme that..."

-Persistence and politeness (Hanging around after the show and asking for stuff nicely, being willing to wait outside the show for a while)
-A lot of Luck (I got the footy coz Stone cant kick and it hit the lights up top and landed in the 2nd row, every othr one went to the 20th row, My Kerry King pick hit me in the face and fell into my shirt, Newy setlist is signed because my wife and some friends randomly bumped into the band on a beach in Perth)
-It helps with PJ because when you see a bunch of shows from up close the crew and band start to recognize you
-Knowing where to ask (Ask the guys at the soundboard for the setlist)

^This too. Very, very true. It's how I got my Ben Bridwell pick. Through all the people screaming for items from the stage, I asked the roadie, "Hey, may I please have that pick?"--he smiled, gave it to me, and told me to have a nice evening

Get there early, get close, please and thank you definitely does help as does an 'excuse me' at just the right time and rock out - if you look like you're getting into the show you're more likely to get stuff from the musicians themselves!!
A tamborine from Eddie... after having one intercepted at Santa Barbara a couple of nights before.
Another tamborine at the Gibson gig... gave it to the gal I was with because I already had one. A drunken David Putty tried to talk her into just giving it to him.
Eddie gave me a guitar pick after a show... and another on after a rehearsal and I got a hit off that wine bottle during 'Crazy Mary'.
Mike gave me guitar pick after a Star Anna gig... Stone gave me one after a Brad show. Actually, I have 2 from Stone.
I have a few guitar picks from Chris Shiflett... and a bunch of drumsticks from Taylor Hawkins (gave away most of them) and a concert used drumhead (snare) from the Buffalo gig (gave that to the friend who let me crash at her pad)... a couple of Dave Grohl guitar picks and RAT wristbands... and a couple of Nate Mendel's picks. Oh, and one guitar pick from Pat Smear. Set list from the Foo Fighters gig at some biker bar in the Valley, signed by everyone.
A Robin Trower guitar pick and a Rick Neilssen (Cheap Trick) guitar pick, both were tossed to the crowd.
Got handed guitar picks from Sheryl Crow, Alanis Morrisette, Lisa Loeb, Charlotte, Jane and Kathy of the Go-Gos, Elvis Costello, Liz Phair and Tom Morello.
I still have a bottle opener I got from Rod Stewart (when he was cool, back in 1972 and in the band, 'The Faces').
Allen Fieldhouse, home of the 2008 NCAA men's Basketball Champions! Go Jayhawks!
Hail, Hail!!!

3 Holly McNarland setlists, grabbed off stage when she finished. Got her to sign one when I met her.
1 Matthew Good setlist, asked the sound guy on the way out.
1 Sarah Slean setlist, asked the sound guy on the way out.
1 Mars Volta bass pick, JA on one side, TMV logo on the other. Cedric was throwing them in the crowd, it hit my friend in the face. He was nice enough to let me have it because they are my favorite band.
1 Damien Rice drumstick. Tomo broke it during I Remeber, spiraled out into the crowd, rolled up to the stage, no one noticed it, I just stood up walked over and picked it up.
1 Pygmy Love Circus setlist grabbed off stage when they opened for A Perfect Circle.
1 Ours setlist grabbed off front of stage.
Was so close to a Matt Cameron stick Toronto 2005. He spiraled it, it landed fat end of the stick directly in the middle of my hand and bounced behind me.
at varying levels of age and drunkenness.. none are particularly important.. at all..
I got a pack of marlboro reds off of the stage working local crew at the Velvet Revolver concert here in Mt. Clemens, MI. a long while back.. It was Slash's.. inside: 2 cigarettes and a pinner.. smoked all three... Thank you Slash!!
Aaron lewis from Staind handed me a walnut-sized kind nug while walking back to his bus after a festival show at the Phoenix.. It came in handy for the ride home.. for such a depressed soul, he was quite the philanthropist. (i hate his music)
I got some pics, a broken string here or there.. Les Claypool signed the inside of my Chucks. The drummer and bass player from Helmet signed a ticket stub from the Ned's Atomic Dustbin concert a had been at just before that..
But nothing compares to the pat on the head I received from Chad of the Red Hot Chili Peppers.. we talked briefly after he was walking off the stage for some other band he played for, opening for Stone Temple Pilots at the Filmore here in Detroit.. Right at the logical end of our conversation he reached out and tapped me on the head.. I freaked out because he came with the same force he plays his drums with, and i flinched (i thought he was coming in for a cheap shot) CHAD RULES!!!

Haven't gotten anything good since. I think I jinxed myself!
Concerts where I got up the front, or close to it. Mind you it took me 10 attempts to get up front before I finally got the barrier at Brisbane.

Time is not being kind to Mr. Lee (see the Super Bowl KIA commercial).
All I've ever gotten at a concert was the standard Mike McCready "no, you!" point-back at MSG '10.
