I don't know if I would support them anymore. Like someone said- I'll just donate to the Cancer Society.

I think it was a desperate (and good) move on their part. It looks like they're desperately trying to save themselves here, but I don't think they'll be able to. Their reputation is tarnished.

i agree. desperate attempt to save face. but people are not going to forget about this. especially those who have relied on planned parenthood for health care.

now that people know about the intentions of their directors and how the one ran for office in georgia as a pro life single issue candidate, i think they will think twice about who they are donating to and will instead donate to planned parenthood and bypass komen altogether...

additionally komen just put heaps of attention onto planned parenthood and has inadvertantly raised a million bucks for PP from private donors. in the process komen now has egg on its face...

the outrage caused by this is proof that the american people feel that these attacks on women's reproductive health have to stop now.

I don't know the specifics or the intent or the agenda of these events/outcomes... so, I'm going to save my opinion til I have some verifiable facts... if they even make it to me.
That said, I am still going to support Breast Cancer Research, whether it is the Susan G. Komen Foundation or the Avon Company. Yeah, these are large organizations, but they are also large contributors. Planned Parenthood is not the only organization that the Komen Foundation helps to fund. One of their key principles is to assist women at risk, namely, those who are least able to afford cancer screenings. Komen's reach is global and they fund breast cancer screenings in some of the most poverty stricken regions of our planet.
The fact is, there are more women surviving breast cancer today, than in your mother's generation. Education, awareness and early detection has increased the survival rate and the stigma of shame from breast cancer 'in the good old days' is vanishing. Part of that awareness is because of the onslaught of pink ribbons and advertisement. Without the funding for these multi-media campaigns, we can't say for sure how many lives were saved or prolonged.
Anyway... I just hit my 10th year with the Avon/Komen Walks and will continue support of something I believe goes beyond political wanking by both side of this abortion/anti-abortion issue.

Any chance this debacle causes the NFL to stop wearing pink for an entire month?

I wonder, too, whether any of the politicians will take note of the strong public sentiment against defunding Planned Parenthood. That would be good.

If anyone questions the Susan G. Komen Foundation on financial (not political) ethics, check them out yourself here:

As stated, I support the Susan G. Komen Foundation and have been a supporter ever since they took over the Avon 3-Day Walks in 2003. I don't care about politics when I have witnessed, first hand over the past 10 years, the actual good they are doing for cancer victims and survivors, their families and friends and the community at large.
It's these fucking anti-abortion organizations that are the instigators. If they do not want their funding to go for abortions, try funding the education that PREVENTS THE UNWANTED PREGNANCIES in the first place. If they don't like the idea of stem cell research used in the search for a cure of cancer... raise funds to use alternative research that does not include stem cell research in the search for the cure. Quit dragging your fucking politics into the fight against cancer.

  • Well thats the thing too. Not only an attack against reproductive health but its a disgrace to the people specifically women's cancer research. For which there was a lack there of and why the Komen Organization was founded.
