Synvisc (Hylan G-F 20) for trashed knees

(i did a search on here for knee injections. all i found was ziggy star's tennis elbow injections)

anyone ever have a smoked knee or three? yesterday a dr. of orthopedics went and examed me and got out his tool of no mercy. he, a gentle soul, all soft spoken and quite nice. this no matter to the needle and knee.

OUCH LIKE TEN F BOMBS
and i mean all ten f bombs... wow.

this needle being the size of a turkey baster. he inserted the needle after his assistant nicely froze the injection site. once in he drew out joint fluid and injected Synvisc lubricant into my knee. this was as painful as it gets with knee steroid injections and now a lubricant. smarts like a son of a bitch.

this needle is about 4 inches long if not longer. holy shit that thing was huge.

when i sat up on the table after he was done, i was looking at the fluid he sucked out of my knee. a nice shot glass size amount. i asked if he could have filled the entire needle with excess joint fluid...he responded...yes i could have but did not wanna put you through anymore... the color of piss with a bit of red swirling blood in it. perfect color of joint fluid he said. you can read the numbers and lines through the needle on other side. joint fluid is as thick as oil as he showed me how thick when squirting some on a papertowel.

she drew out almost 1 fluid ounce of joint fluid (5 units more than he last time)
    them rammed in the Synvisc
same needle just changed out thingys
one stick, long and deep in there
    she did touch bone

  • Is the knee feeling better between treatments? From what I know about this, it should work wonders on your knees for the foreseeable future, no?

synvisc is made from feathers and that red thing on a chickens head and neck areas.

To make sure you can safely receive Synvisc, tell your doctor if you have:

hurts as always but shows great help in reducing some painful stuff. just the shot itself is a killer, that's one large/long needle. this alone will hurt for days. i don't bruise easily but i am sure for those who do bruise...this leaves a nice one.

i'll notice in a bit how things feel as i go for my evening stroll through the park.

have a good evening, mr. fenway, Sir...

welcome to the painful exploding knees of greatness. this is your key to incredible agony. thank you.

    fuck me!

sitting here typing at the desk is a real son of a bitch as i am about to cry & scream out in pain because my knees are currently talking to me...actually they are yelling at me something fierce. after swimming today when walking to the locker room it was solid baby steps and severe. it is very sharp and drilling at a constant even during sleep. actually during sleep my legs do that fantastic lil number of where a jolt of electrical type misery shoots down my shins, comes out my toes. lemme tell you about uncomfortable bullshit and what feels like my shin bone being ripped apart.

    synvisc:
    goodtimes those injections
    week 1... X (was the 18th)
week 2... the 25th of this month
week 3... one week after the 25th

if you're looking for goodtimes go ahead & trash your knees
then go have your dr. ram needles into them

the other day they aspirated my knees. aspirate means they draw out joint fluid. a normal knee has 2-3 ml of joint fluid. my left knee had 26ml sucked out of it. my right knee had 22ml taken out of it.

ouch. then they rammed needles fulla chicken feathers & chicken comb up into them.

OUCH!!! You have my sympathy. I have a brother in law with 2 bad knees and I know just from him how painful bad knees can be. Hopefully the injections bring long term relief.

'Chicken Shots' May Replace Knee Replacement in Some

    By Salynn Boyles
    WebMD Health News

Nov. 16, 2001 -- Ben Singletary, 69, can barely remember a time when he didn't suffer from excruciating knee pain due to osteoarthritis. His deteriorating knees forced him to give up his Shreveport, La., ob-gyn practice in 1994, and he underwent surgery a year and a half later to replace his left knee.

"I knew it was only a matter of time before I would have to have surgery on the other knee," Singletary tells WebMD. "It took me about three months to get over the first one, so I put it off as long as I could. When Dr. Waddell told me about the chicken shots, I could have hugged his neck."

Instead of surgery, Singletary underwent a procedure called viscosupplementation, in which hyaluronic acid -- a substance that acts as a shock absorber or cushion -- is injected into the knee joint.

In knees with osteoarthritis, normal joint fluid becomes thin and inflexible, losing its cushioning properties. The procedure was approved for use in the U.S. in 1997 but has been used in Japan and Italy for over a decade. Patients often refer to the series of injections as 'chicken shots' because the injected fluid is extracted from the combs on the back of chicken's heads.

"Or it may be that we are referring to the fact that most of us are scared of surgery," Singletary says. "I'm not sure."

There are two such types of injections available in the U.S. -- Synvisc and Hyalgan. Synvisc is given as a series of three injections into the knee, one week apart. Hyalgan is given as a series of five injections, also one week apart.

Singletary says the series of three injections of Synvisc kept him free of pain for just over a year, and a second series of injections relieved his pain for two more years. At this week's annual meeting of the American College of Rheumatology in San Francisco, orthopaedic specialist David D. Waddell, MD, of LSU Health Science Center, presented two studies evaluating the effectiveness of the knee injection therapy among people with advanced osteoarthritis.

Waddell reported that people like Singletary responded well when given a second course of Synvisc injection treatments after the first course had failed. More than half (57%) of the 129 people who had a second round of injections reported that their knee pain was improved six months later. Waddell tells WebMD that he has given the three-shot series to some people as many as five times, and many are still responding.

In a second study, Waddell and colleagues evaluated the effectiveness of Synvisc injections in delaying knee replacement surgery. People with advanced osteoarthritis who had the injection therapy were compared with those who did not. Those who received the injections were much less likely to need surgery over the following three years than those who did not.

"Up until now, I think many people were reserving this treatment for patients with moderate levels of osteoarthritis," Waddell tells WebMD. "These studies show that it is very effective in patients with advanced disease, and that it is safe and effective as repeat treatment."

Singletary recently underwent a third round of injections, which were unsuccessful, because he now has calcium deposits within the soft tissue of his knee. Even though the doctor will soon be scheduling a second knee replacement surgery, he says he would still recommend the injections to anyone.

"I had three good years with very little pain at a fraction of the cost and a fraction of the risk of surgery," he says. "After I had gone through the second round of injections, a former patient called and asked what I was doing about my knees. I told her about the chicken shots, but they had never heard of it where she lived. I told her to get a plane ticket and come to Shreveport."

pseudoseptic or pseudosepsis had taken over my right knee. the agony was and is still unreal but the bigger part of the torture is over. i was hospitalized tuesday afternoon till yesterday afternoon. i believe today is friday? days are scrambbled up a bit. after looking i find out it is indeed friday evening... currently.

dilaudid was injected into my i-v every 2 hours as needed for pain. horse shit @ their dosage recomendation. 2 milliliters is not enough i can tell ya that. plus a methadone 10 mgs tab broken in half is weak ass bullshit as well.

they did fantastic work with me. they care hugely & are easy to get along with & they are very educated & a fun group. the hospital itself rocks because of the people. i rate them 5 stars out of 5 stars. but god dammit can ya give a guy some flippin dope? wow!

if any of y'all want to experience true maddening insane pain... get these kness i have. basically have your pal smash your knee(s) with a bAll bat or a sledge hammer, then come talk to me about pseudoseptic in the knee.

basically i had an infection in my knee joint due to being jabbed by needles during both the knees aspirating & synvisc injections.

welcome home, chadlick! can we kick you in your bad knee(s)
now i go from a cane to a walker
this fucker hopefully goes into the folded position & placed into my closet here directly

see how joint fluid looks like pee? the lady that drains & injects my knees is a blast. she just loves aspirating knees; it is her favorite, she tells me so. we then squeeze the plunger over a napkin or cotton thing or gauze and the shit is thick like syrup or some kinda oil.

the average healthy knee has 2-3 milliliters of joint fluid in it. she usually draws out around 30ml or so. just the other day lying in the hospital she came into my room with what i believe she said was a 16 gauge needle. something like a turkey baster. no numbing solution, no freeze spray. straight up stuck me & sucked my knee. that fucking hurt bad as i let out moans and stuff grabbing the bed railing in one hand & in the other hand i'm clentching my iv pole.

that fucking hurt... shit. it not only drained 62 milliliters of fluid off my knee but it literally drained what little energy i had in me. i felt weak and depleted

she was astounded and tickled to death her turkey baster was soo full of my urine looking joint fluid. and as i lay there screaming/moaning in pain the head nurse walks in freakin out that im being worked on and when she saw that giant needle completely filled she about shit herself right there where she stood.

the doc says i have another 200 milliliters in my knee... currently. this doesn't include my bad knee/the other one that is usually the worst

i'm a tough fucker... swam one hour today. right leg, completely dead. i kicked barelly with the left and it hardly could move as well but it did.

i will swim until i can't live any longer. i'll probably die in the water. unreal feeling when one's legs don't go when swimming. frickin weird.

i ice my knees and have nurses in old fashion nursing outfits come and jump on my knees and kiss them for me. it helps.

thank you, brianlux & 81. love you guys! we'll im out of here. guitar is calling as is the pain management pills.

wish i had a iv fulla medical grade dope or something

    have a excellent weekend, everyone.

no she didn't but i will ask her. i am assuming because it was very much huge swollen and did not need another drop of fluid in it. i see her in 4 days. i'll ask and write her answer down as i always take pen/pencil and lil notebook when i see the docs. a person should always move about this land with writing instruments and paper at all times. can't write a line or two for a poem while walking the park if one doesn't have the proper shit on em. same with visiting one's doctor and needing to record joint fluid aspirated

    have a beautiful evening... supersonicyears.

study, do your homework, kids. review is not known at this time but it is coming.

find a study partner and read up on 'genicular nerve block' - diagnostic

then also look up & study genicular nerve burning.

    thank you.

first you get the block. then you get the burnt nerves if the block was successful. in this case it was a great success & we are all aboard for the burning of the three nerves in L knee

    thank you

knee replacements aren't an option Chad? We must have asked this question of you somewhere before, I just dont recall if we had or what the answer was.
not now no they are not.
will there be this option at some point? Is it a $/insurance issue? Medically prohibitve?

Wow just read through most of this and really feel for you. I work with a lot of people post knee replacement and almost everybody says they wish they hadn't waited as long as they had. Don't know if you have any other reason to wait and keep in mind post knee replacement rehab is not necessarily easy but could be better than how you are feeling/functioning now. Sorry you are still struggling.
