Well either way...San Diego doesn't deserve an NFL team. Boggles my mind that teams can't sell out home games.
Blows my mind as well, as I live here in SD...
Pre-cursor: I am a Dolphins fan, have been my whole life.
Every restaurant, supermarket, etc...flys Chargers flags, seemingly every other car has a Bolt sticker or license rim on it...drop the kids off at school on Fridays, half the kids are wearing Seau, Rivers, Tomlinson, Gates jerseys...so cool to see a community rally behind their team...
All of that being said:
The climate here in San Diego makes football NOT a priority for the "natives" here. Let me explain:
Incredible golf...world's best beaches...some of the best parks...trails and biking is huge here, Coronado, LA 2 hrs away, AZ 5 hrs away, Vegas 5 hrs away...There is SO much other stuff to do here...PLUS - lack of championship football & $54 per ticket for nosebleed, 3rd level tickets makes it damn near impossible for a family of 5 to go enjoy the Chargers.
Let's face it - Direct TV/Sunday Ticket/RedZone has made the selling out of the non-traditional football hardcore markets less and less of an option...
Last year Miami came here. I have Direct TV. Granted Miami wasn't/isn't a huge draw post-Marino (& post winning). Cheapest ticket I could find was $54 - there are 5 of us Dolfans in this house = $270 - without the $20 parking, $8 beers, $6 hot dogs, etc... Obviously couldn't swing it. Guess what? It was blacked out, so the extra $$$ I spend each year to watch every single snap of my beloved Fins, couldn't pay for me to watch them that day. No bullshit - I would have had to drive to MEXICO to watch them. BS!!!
Sucks. These fans rally around a winner here. That being said, losing teams here don't draw worth a damn. I went to a Padres game vs the Mets - 1/2 empty and 3/4 Mets fans. I went to Gonzaga/USD hoops game - 1/2 empty and 3/4 Zags fans. Hockey folded here because they couldn't draw. I went to Charger fan appreciation day - autographs for the kids, meet the players $1 hot dogs and $2 beers - Qualcomm was 1/2 full (and it was FREE).
If SD loses there team to LA, it will be a shame to the handful of diehards here. Problem is the novelty will wear off in LA, and their stadium will be 3/4 full after the 2nd year and less and less as they continue to lose.
Sad

$54 for a nose bleed?? That's cheap!! Try going to a Packer or Bears game, that would MAYBE cover parking!

GB = The average wait time for season tickets is said to be over 30 years (over 78000 waiting), with less than 100 tickets turned over each year. ESPN.com ranked the Packers as having the second-best fans in the NFL.
CHI = The average wait time for season tickets is said to be over 15 years (over 4000 waiting)...
You can walk up right now and buy season tickets for the Chargers
Last I checked, Packers and Bears have HISTORY of winning championships, Super Bowls, etc...
Chargers have a history - 1 Conference championship and are barely .500 since 1960.
Granted, $54 is less expensive than the typical NFL experience, but for a family of 5 w/ parking and concessions, prep for tailgate, etc...gets mighty pricy my friend.
In my humblest of opinions, nothing beats Sunday Ticket/RedZone - much more economical. Hence, back to the relevancy of the topic back a few comments ago re: SD moving to LA...
PS - in Green Bay in Dec are you golfing, hiking, boating, surfing, para-sailing, going to the beach, etc...? Again, the reason the Bolts don't sell out. That, and they are usually in the midst of some Norv Turner collapse...There's a reason 78000 people are waiting literal lifetimes to get to games @ GB. Captains Walk Winery is ranked the #3 thing to do (behind Lambeau Field and Packers Hall of Fame). Again, respectfully, back to the relevancy of the topic back a few comments ago re: SD moving to LA...
I agree with the climate playing a big part in attendance in San Diego. I used to cherish the few weekends where it was raining so I could sit on my butt the whole day and not feel guilty about it.
And LA complaining about San Diego not deserving a team ... well, that's throwing stones in a glass house.
Your Dolphins aren't filling up their stadium. Saw a lot of empty orange seats out there last weekend. :fp:
Sadly you are correct. On Home Opener weekend at that! They had Dolphins Legends handing out free hats at each gate, music and tailgate options, etc... They got to about 75% filled mid 2nd quarter, and once it was a blowout, maybe 1/3 stuck around...
I'd point to 2 already discussed things: TONS of things to do and the quality of the product. Fins have been in decline for over a decade...Note: look at Heat games. Win = sold out. Look at Marlins games. Stink = half empty stadium. The economy has some to do with it also. Plus, it ain't just a Fins, Bolts problem kind sir. The consequences of 50 inch HD TVs, more television access (Direct TV package), and a better overall viewing experience = less $$$at the gate. Why bother waiting in traffic, paying $10 for a beer, and potentially getting harassed/beat-up if your team is visiting when you can just stay home with some friends and have a better time?
PS - most all NFL attendance has been declining since 2007. See below-->
Per NFL.com: It translates to an average paid crowd of 64,698. That’s the lowest per-game number since 1998, when 64,020 tickets were bought per game for 240 total regular-season contests.
Repeated shrinkage over the last half decade underscores the challenge the NFL is facing. At a time when everything else regarding the sport is growing, the league has seen its paying customers steadily drop by more than 4.5 percent since 2007.
$$ and home comfort. Plain and simple.

Oh yeah, there are plenty of factors that go into it, but you can't deny that Miami is a total front-runner type of sports town. The HDTV thing has really changed things as well.....a lot of people would rather just stay home. I guess just living in Chicago and being Bears fan, the thought of a home game not being sold out or the ability to walk up to a ticket office and get season tickets is crazy to me.

Yep. In fact, because of the situation in Miami they have adopted some new relaxed blackout rule to increase the chances of home games being shown on local TV. The league has given teams the option of having games televised in their market if 85% of non-premium tickets are sold.
85%...
Sad.
In the 90's I flew down to Miami a few times a year to catch games. Sell outs and the most happening tailgate parties ever.
85%...and Ross ended up buying a bunch of seats for the home opener (up to 9000 the sentinel said) so it could be televised...
75000 seat stadium that used to sell out (over 109 consecutive games at one point!) struggles to get 61,000 - only 42,000+ season ticket holders (in the late 80's & 90 it was almost 64,000!!!)
Lots of transients play a part in these markets too...SD, Miami, AZ, etc... they have fans from all over the place moving to these premier living areas and bringing their team allegiances and satelite dishes with them.
Side note: Real Sports w/ Bryan Gumbel (HBO) had a horrific piece this week on violence at stadiums...jeez people have turned into morons, extremely sad and no doubt is keeping people away.

AGREED! "Safety is of the utmost importance" If Goodell really cared about saftey he would not have these guys playing 4 days after battle. I listened to Jason Taylor (who arguably is considered a specimen type athlete) and Tony Gonzalez say THEY struggled up until Tuesday evenings with feeling "right" after a Sunday game.
It's disease and they're all green...

I never understood the purpose of a blackout ... TV is the best way to build a fanbase. You black games out, people lose interest.
Agreed 10000000%
Why the NFL would choose to keep their product (arguably the BEST sports product imo) out of sight is beyond me... Having NFL games on TV, especially LOCAL TV is the best advertising for their team, and the only sure fire way to build a loyal fan base. You know, the fans that will want to go to games, buy Sunday Ticket, order jerseys, etc...In my opinion the NFL does not understand the business rule of "out of sight, out of mind" They are missing out and neglecting a generation of young fans because they never get to see them on TV.
How 'bout the old timers, in homes and the whatnot that can't get around these stadiums, love their local teams and can't watch them? Bums me out...
Just think about this: IF the blackout rule worked as the NFL originally drafted it/wanted it - there'd be no blackouts, right?
Sux
Like these Thursday nite games for teams that play on preceding Sundays, the NFL doesn't care about safety - it's all about the almighty $$$
Greed sux!
Wow...glad the Eli part was at the end, I chuckled - until that point I wondered a) if this person got paid to do this b) where was Russell Wilson and c) was I missing something
These replacement referees are getting worse week by week!
I agree. Did you see the one just throw his hat on the field and trip up Ogletree? Surprised he didn't blow out his knee.
1998 - Noblesville 2000 - Noblesville 2010 - Noblesville 2011 - EV solo St Louis, PJ20 Alpine Valley 2012 - San Fran (Oracle) 2013 - Wrigley, Pittsburgh, Buffalo 2014 - Cincy, St Louis, Detroit 2016 - Lexington, Wrigley 2018 - Wrigley 2022 - Nashville, St Louis 2024 - Noblesville, Wrigley
These replacement refs fucking review every play! None of them have the balls to make a ruling on the field and always rely on replay. Absolutely ridiculous.
