Same thing happened to me and a friend too. I got lucky though...my friend though, I could not protect from the 7 guys that attacked us. He almost got his jaw knocked off, and was eating through a straw for over a month...Completely unprovoked. Sometimes I wonder if we need to test testosterone levels and drain some of these idiots.

I don't make excuses for hate and violence but the leaders of bully gangs
are often learning this at home, from young on. Factor in that sometimes
'apples don't fall far from trees'
and you have a new generation of thoughtless cruel people.

The followers for me personally are much more responsible for incidents.
They feed the bully, fear the bully, support the bully, and make it possible
    for bullies to rule ...
when all they have to do is say no, I won't hurt another human being.

I wonder if anyone heard or saw or heard the commotion. It was a Sunday in the freaking city!

I would have called the cops and then confronted them.

If they want to take a shot at me, I won't play pretty.

Was this ‘kids being kids’ or in reality should it be viewed as --‘gang’ violence or --a ‘hate’ crime? Clearly these thugs, -yes thugs- wanted people to see them because they believe nothing serious, like jail time, is going to happen to them.
SIN EATERS--We take the moral excrement we find in this equation and we bury it down deep inside of us so that the rest of our case can stay pure. That is the job. We are morally indefensible and absolutely necessary.

don't think it's a hate crime ... you can only identify one youth ... they could be asian or black or whatever ... you don't know ... i suspect it has nothing to do with hate ... just thugs ...

kids trying to be bad-asses and not realizing that a bad ass kid would be the one who tried to stop such a scene. Kids are followers and that can be explained away to a certain point. NOT to this point though. Just straight up disturbing. Agree that it is not likely a 'hate crime' but a serious crime nonetheless.

Not trying to be too confrontational... but these boys are to blame.

The parents are likely dickheads, but regardless, we don't give young people enough credit for being responsible. They generally know the difference between right and wrong and many choose wrong opting for lame apologies that mean nothing afterwards to relieve them from penalty.

A lethargic and leniant society with limp-wristed penal and judicial systems and an eager willingness to pardon criminals for their acts is at fault here.

Excellent question, Jeanwah. My hunch, again my hunch is TV, movies, video games. I remember going to a movie theater in San Francisco several years ago and seeing a violent biker movie. The movie was sort of like violence porn and only shown in the seediest small independent theaters. (This was not my idea of a good time by the way. A guy I knew back then said, "Hey lets to to the movies and see something different. Different alright. :( ) About a year later another friend (yes, I had some strange friends way back then :? ) suggested we go see this new Movie, "Dirty Harry". This movie was touted as the first ultra violent movie to gain mass popularity and acceptance. It was just the beginning. You can probably watch that movie on TV today. As a society, we've been desensitized to pointless violence and then taken it a step further to where we now idolize, promote, sell and profit from violence. As long as it sells-- and it does, big time-- it will continue to affect our collective psyche.

By the way, anyone here inclined to see me as a prude- I'm not, and I don't mean to sound condescending or authoritative in saying this, but though I may be as desensitized by fictitious violence as anyone, I also know how to view things with discrimination, skepticism and critical thinking and the fact that these skills are not often taught by parents and teachers might also be a factor.

I have the Ps3 game Grand Theft Auto, and although it says 17+ on the box, I know parents who let their kids and kids under 17 play this. On the box it says: Strong Language, Intense Violence, Blood and Gore, Strong Sexual Content, and Use of Drugs. Not to mention the killing of police and hiring hookers for blowjobs..

I feel like a hypocrite playing this game, but no one under 18 should be playing this.

I play this game in my 30's and sometimes I get in my car and it almost seems OK to just ram the shit out of some people on the road. Very desensitizing.

I don't buy the desensitizing bullshit.

This crap has always gone on. Lets not blame movies and video games.. I'm willing to bet some of these kids come from violent households and parents that don't really care about them.

There were plenty of violent movies and video games I watched as a teenager in the 90s. Never did that translate to the real world. BIG difference.

If you are blaming video games, you are ignoring the real problem.

Just because digital film is easily accessable now, doesn't mean this stuff never happened before.

I'm not solely blaming video games, but it surely doesnt help. Besides, I assume you are inferring that the issues start with their parents. I'd agree -- I think that is a majority of it. But whats to be said for parents that let their 10 year old play Grand Theft Auto? That's poor parenting, imo...

Great, you are one example of a kid who watched violent movies in the 90s and didnt go beat the shit out of someone for no reason. So because it didnt happen to you, it doesnt happen to anybody? The old, "I watched violent movies and I turned out fine" doesnt mean shit in the bigger picture. So what.

But I do agree that this stuff has likely always happened. We might not have seen it as often because not everyone had a video camera 30 years ago...

a group of people go nuts on a dude, beating him senceless. this is a mad mob scene. they feed off one another striking in pack form, this is how large groups of violent shits work.

they are cowardly and when alone have zero fighting ability and would run and or get beat down and cry for their moms 99% of the time.

this kind of thing happened to me on a number of occasions but never as severe as this because i fought back and was never flat out jumped by that many kids, maybe 3 or 4 kids vs' me by myself. this is why i can fight, have a bad attitude at times, and take zero crap and generally would rather walk than fight. but if they must fight with me, i am breakin some fuckers' heads.

in the ymca shower men's locker room i was jumped by 3 kids all spitting on me as i tried showering after a swim. i was alone and my heart pumping. i was in the boxing club and took kick boxing, ect. i kicked them and punched them as hard and as often as i could. kicked one in the chest so hard he couldn't breathe and fell out cold as a dead fish smackin his head on the tiled shower room floor. his buddy's goin, "wtf?"

    stupid cocksuckers...
another time, my first fight outside my two brothers. a group of kids kicking the shit out of this dude in my class, im in what? 1st grade maybe? me and my friend walking home from school said, "hey leave our friend alone" they then beat me up. i was being punched and kicked. one kneed me square in the eye. stupid bastard gave me my first black eye. they were only junior high kids

the kids i fought with almost on a daily basis were rich kids who lived with their parents in new large upscale homes. they wore new and in style clothes and their parents had new cars and things. they did not like me and my brothers because we didn't have that kind of money. so we fought and things. and they started it pretty much every single time.

in my eyes rich kids dislike poor kids because their clothes are not new and in fashion, the family car a beater and the house not a dream home. for these kinds of things i got bloody, bruised, and in trouble often.

i once got beat up for wearing a old brown coat. at catholic school mind you...

but the thing I have a problem with in talking about causation or correlation, and I know behavioral sciences do their best to take this stuff into consideration, but what other problems have been on the rise during that same time...more urbanization? more people in general? more single parent households? etc...

It just has never sit well with me that violence isn't part of human nature. That is what is said when things like video games are blamed...it says to me, it wasn't their fault, they were corrupted by outside factors...Humans are violent, we are animals...most likely we are in the middle of our evolution and that violence may lose out in the end but for now it is here. We can do our best to try and minimize it, or marginalize it, but it is here. Watching this...it is a mob mentality...it is like a riot...most people in it don't know how it started, or even why they are participating, a mob truly has a mind of its own.
