I'd say this is my all time favorite album side.

I'd say LZ III is my favorite album to listen to - I love the way it's structured.

Probably no better album opener ever than Immigrant Song - not much more to be said about that.
Friends/Celebration Day. Friends is such a cool song that is completely underrated. Celebration Day is a classic Zep hippie rocker, and the rumor is that somebody destroyed the beginning of the song tape and they had to blend the two together.
Since I've Been Loving You is the all time bluesy rock song, and maybe Page's greatest emotional solo. And Out on the Tiles is a great rocker to end Side 1.

Side 2 is a whole other thing. Away go the amps, and here comes Gallows Pole - the sad medieval song that sounds like a blast with the fast accoustic treatment. Tangerine is one of the most beautiful Zep songs, and That's the Way maybe drags a bit but is a Plant masterpiece. Bron-Yr-Aur Stomp makes me want to go get a dog (in live versions Plant yells out "Strider" at the end). Hats off to Roy Harper is hated by some, but I enjoy the ridiculous mockery of the old black guys that LZ stole so much music from.

Only problem with III is that they left off Hey Hey What Can I Do, which fits in perfectly after Friends/Cel Day.

I don't care if That's The Way drags, I love that song. My favourite on side 2.

My favorite is Houses of the Holy.

Kinda weird that the song with the same name wasn't on that album! another tidbit---LZ never performed the song live.

I also agree that you should start from the beginning and work your way through. It's not like they get better with age, they just morph. Kinda like Pearl Jam! ;)

  • i'd say probably the 2nd greatest band in history, behind those blokes from liverpool. i first and still respond alot to the whole mysticism aspect of their music and image. from roberts obsession with lord of the rings, to jimmy's well documented experimentation into the occult. The picture of that guy with the stick on Zoso. And that robed guy on top of that mountain in the liner notes. And just the sound of alot of the songs. Growing up in the 90's, and listening to mostly grunge and nothing else, when i first heard Led Zeppelin in 94, i remember feeling very wierd about the music. Stairway sounds and sounded like nothing i'd heard before. Being raised on Smells like teen Sprit and Alive, and Come as You Are, the opening riff and the first couple verses of Stairway were bizaare to me. Same with the battle of evermore. i hadnt heard anything like it. This was music i could get lost in and it seemed to transport me to another place, some foreign forest in England or something. I like how they were essentially all about the music. yes they all lived the rock star lifestyle to the max, but they shunned media attention and interviews and all that stuff. And i think the whole experimentation into other sounds, how varied their music is. From Stairway to Kashmir, to Dyer Maker, to Black Dog, they were exploring so many genres and styles.
