I've never been a huge fan, I guess I haven't given them a good enough listen, as of late I have been listening to their albums to try become more of a fan.
What would you rate as their best album?

  • More than any other band I can think of, with Led Zeppelin you should seriously just start at the very beginning and work your way through... it's probably the best journey in the history of rock music, but because it changes a lot through the years it's hard to jump around and dip in and out as a new fan. Get stuck into LZ I and II, but back them up with early live shows (audio and video). Go through the albums in order, and mirror progression with live shows. When I got into LZ big time many years ago, I also found reading about the band through the years helped, I found it all pretty fascinating.

To answer the question though, I would say LZ IV as well.

I agree that you should start at the beginning & give it a complete run-through. My fav has changed over the years, but I think it has to be Physical Graffiti. Love Kashmir.
    I win.
  • Try Physical Graffiti... but the chronological approach makes sense too.... I listened to almost all Zep exclusively...until 1993 when i heard this album called Ten.......

Start at the beginning, the only way you will see the progression of the band and love them

you are a wise man. frickin zed lep was always a spinnin on my record player when i was a kid. and i could never not agree with starting at the beginning. and IV being badass. i do however love me some in the evening which came off their later album, in through the outdoor.

to me these gentlemen are beyond where everyone else is at. they would be alone and lonely with their gift of creativity and music, yet they are content and probably the opposite of lonely and alone. i guess they are pillars of the treetops or somewhere untouchable and beautiful. glorious the both of them, spectacular the entire group.

Agree 100% Reading about them is always fascinating and read about Peter Grant too ... I doubt the band would have dominated the world the way they have if it's hadn't been for the behemoth that he was.
I could live a life without hearing any other band (yes even PJ) but not Led Zeppelin

  • I would have to go with Physical Graffiti as well. I remember rushing out to buy it when it first came out and have not tired of it since.

I think it is just the consistently high quality of the music from the start of Custard Pie onwards that hooks me in every time and keeps me coming back to it.

Mind you their catalogue is not a bad collection of albums to have to pick from.
Now I'm livin' out here on the beach,

physical graffiti has always been the measure of greatness for me. i've got shows from every tour, demos, unreleased stuff...one of the best bands ever. it's funny, but physical graffiti was supposed to only be 1 record, but it wouldn't fit onto a single "disc", so they found some outtakes & made it a double. in my time of dying is incredible! pick up the led zeppelin dvd & how the west was won, as well as the bbc sessions. there's also a ton of great books about them. peter grant was a mobster! he was the muscle that helped insure zeppelin changed the game. mick jagger even said that nobody was playing over 30 minute shows until zeppelin started doing marathon 2-3 hour shows nightly. i could go on, my first love....

I'd say this is my all time favorite album side.

I'd say LZ III is my favorite album to listen to - I love the way it's structured.

Probably no better album opener ever than Immigrant Song - not much more to be said about that.
Friends/Celebration Day. Friends is such a cool song that is completely underrated. Celebration Day is a classic Zep hippie rocker, and the rumor is that somebody destroyed the beginning of the song tape and they had to blend the two together.
Since I've Been Loving You is the all time bluesy rock song, and maybe Page's greatest emotional solo. And Out on the Tiles is a great rocker to end Side 1.

Side 2 is a whole other thing. Away go the amps, and here comes Gallows Pole - the sad medieval song that sounds like a blast with the fast accoustic treatment. Tangerine is one of the most beautiful Zep songs, and That's the Way maybe drags a bit but is a Plant masterpiece. Bron-Yr-Aur Stomp makes me want to go get a dog (in live versions Plant yells out "Strider" at the end). Hats off to Roy Harper is hated by some, but I enjoy the ridiculous mockery of the old black guys that LZ stole so much music from.

Only problem with III is that they left off Hey Hey What Can I Do, which fits in perfectly after Friends/Cel Day.

Loved them since high school (half my life ago) and still never a month goes by that I don't play Led Zeppelin as loudly as I can get away with.
