Started a thread called unknown gems, which were looking for bands like this.
A norwegian band I love is Ghost :dog. I actually went to school with the guitarist, and have partied sometimes (through common friends) with the singer. I think they`re ace, and deserve a larger audience.
Casket Salesmen... a great American band that never got the audience they deserved, and I'm not sure if that's why they broke up, but it's a shame that they did. They sounded like an amalgamation of Queens of the Stone Age and My Morning Jacket, among other influences.
My favorite songs by them are Dr. Jesus and The Anaheimlich Maneuver and it figures that I can't find them on YouTube. This is not one of their best, but still quite excellent, and a good representation of their sound: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x8Sa-UoLHFE
For bands from Australia would agree with Powderfinger but also add bands from over here on the left hand side of the country like Eskimo Joe and Jebediah.
Would also go back a couple of decades and mention my fellow fossils Cold Chisel. While Molly Meldrum was raving about Air Supply because they were making it big overseas in Australia Chisel were packing houses everywhere and people couldn't give a stuff about Air Supply.
Incidentally on the question of Powderfinger's name I seem to remember the band being asked if it was named after Uncle Neil's song and from memory the answer was something like "absolutely".
Now I'm livin' out here on the beach,
but those seagulls are still out of reach.
I was just about to mention Cold Chisel when I saw your post. Hunters and Collectors were my favourite Australian band, I doubt that they made it big overseas however.
***Paul Kelly*** Australian singer/songwriter/legend. PK is a master storyteller and weaves the types of narratives about Australia that Dylan and Springsteen do about the US (start with 'How to Make Gravy', 'Deeper Water', 'Everything's Turning to White', 'Sweet Guy', 'To Her Door', 'Look so Fine, Feel so Low', 'Pouring Petrol on a Burning Man'... then buy 'Songs From The South' if you enjoy this range of songs)
John Butler Trio - start with 'Treat yo Mama', 'Funky Tonight', 'Betterman' (not PJ), ... 'Live at Red Rocks' CD/DVD
silverchair - start with 'Greatest View' or anything off the Diorama or Young Modern albums
as already mentioned: Powderfinger, Jebadiah, Something for Kate
I also love Clare Bowditch, WASHINGTON, Lior, Josh Pyke... but this getting more alternative pop/folksy
Tarantula Waltz(check out the song Tritonus If Dylan heard it he would wish he wrote it, one of the greatest Swedish song ever written in my opinion!) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DYi1Ynh3mso

There were some nice rock bands here back in the 90's but most of all do not exist anymore.
My favourites are: Trypes, Ksylina Spathia, Magic de Spell, Mora sti fotia etc.
D:A:D - great old school rockers, tried to make it big but never really succeeded. I do think Tony Hawk once skated to their music during some og his shows.
I used to love D:A:D! I think I've still got my 'No Fuel Left For The Pilgrims' LP in a box of old vinyl somewhere, I need to dig that out someday. I loved 'Riskin It All' as well, "Laugh 'n' a ½" is a such great song
“Do not postpone happiness”
(Jeff Tweedy, Sydney 2007)
silverchair - start with 'Greatest View' or anything off the Diorama or Young Modern albums
oh god no.. young modern? daniels outrageous electrosubsonic overcomplicated weirdass pop was always destined for disaster. i cant blame chris and ben for walking out after a final cash grab.
there were some good songs on diorama, but neon ballroom displayed the widest array of their talent. unfortunately DJ tried too many times to write his "november rain" after that... emotion sickness was it. with david helfgott on the piano.
but yes, back on topic... powderfinger. double allergic, internationalist and odyssey#5 are amazing albums. they were mind blowing in that 5 yr period... but then turned into a very lazy commercial (see wealthy) radio band. having said that i still continued to see them until that 5th brisbane show at the riverstage.
agree paul kelly, and the hunters... oh and ill throw the baby animals self titled in there for good measure.
Yeh I've seen Pearl Jam, too. But I can't remember the dates.

You won't likely find their album in stores, but there's plenty of copies on eBay, and it's worth way more than the few bucks it's being sold for...
