    My great five from Denmark.

D:A:D - great old school rockers, tried to make it big but never really succeeded. I do think Tony Hawk once skated to their music during some og his shows.

Inside The Whale - sadly they've disbanded, but their music was (also) a part of my youth and shaping me into who I am today.

Sort Sol - another great old school band, who also disbanded.

Reverend Shine Snake Oil Co. - not sure if they are 100% Danish, but based here. Discovered them as a warm up gig for FLC once, great show.

Blood Label - my cousins up and coming heavy band. Would still be a fan even if my cousin didn't make noise with his bass.
Have fun, walk hard and stay alive.

  • Sweet Water.
Big in Seattle around same time Pearl Jam and everyone else was taking off. Signed by Atlantic and released one album through them. Which was great IMO. Dropped by Atlantic and then not sure what happened. Was living in Seattle and going to school for Music/Video Business. Going to see all of these bands all of the time was one of the greatest times of my life. The talent was endless. Feel so lucky to have seen all of these people live. Andy, Chris, Kurt, Layne and many others. Was a great time to be living in Seattle
They re-surfaced again in early 2009 and independently released another album. Clear The Tarmac. And have been playing live again as well. Saw them here in Portland in 2009. They were awesome and sounded better than ever. Chris Friel, who has played in a couple of Mike's bands as well as with Pearl Jam is now their drummer. Very excited to see them with this new addition. They have many other albums out as well that they released independently that are very good too. Have to agree on The Church as well, but could not include because I am not from their country. If interested in Sweet Water check them out. They are a great live band.

Oops. I didn't fully read the original post. In that case I probably should have left out Feist and City & Colour as well. And the Hip are absolutely massive in Canada, so I guess technically they've "made it", since they make heaps of money and can routinely sell out arenas and stadiums.

As I'm from Wales and now live in Australia I'm going to cheat and name great bands from both countries!

Gruff Rhys is a fantastic Welsh singer. His band Super Furry Animals are pretty big but his solo work, especially the Hotel Shampoo album, really deserves to be hear by a bigger audience.

If We Were Words (We Would Rhyme)

As for Australia, I agree on Powderfinger and I'll also add the mighty You Am I and Ash Grunwald to the list. You Am I have kinda had their shot at the big time but they're still fantastic, especially live, and Tim Rogers is one of the great frontmen. Ash Grunwald is a blues-influenced singer that always puts on a great show too

I can really only think of lacuna coil, but I don't particularly like them. Italians don't really do rock well, it's always that cheesy poppy crap that makes it big here.

as for austria, they have some pretty decent metal bands. nothing really exciting compared to places like sweden or norway though.
