I think you should change your MD, You have recieved better advice in this forum than the Doc's office.

Hmmmm....another doctor last year told me exactly the same thing ie cortisone injection.

I've just emailed my doc and asked whether I should see the physiotherapist next door to him first.

Since I've spent soooo much on doctors and specialists this year, I have free medical appts until 31 December....so was kinda hoping to squeeze this in before Xmas. But now I've been told about that the pain, I'm thinking ice + brace might do the trick!:lol:

Wow! Thank you so much for all the info! Does ASTYM work forever? Did your problem recur after your 5 treatments?

Basically, I want to know if tennis elbow ever really goes away completely....or will I have this for the rest of my life?
ASTYM can work forever. the problem is if you are in a job that requires a lot of typing or other repetitive movement there is always the chance it will come back. you might need to change the way you do those activities. i am a guitar player so my thumb and wrist gets sore quite often after playing a 3 hour show, but it does not come back anywhere near the intensity as it was before. the key is to stay on top of your symptoms and do not let them get out of control. treat with ice and antiinflammatories if you can take them.

below are 2 pictures. the first one is a microscopic slide showing damaged muscle fibers with fibrosis. this is what the fibers in your elbow look like.

    BADTENDON.jpg

do you see the erratic almost s-shaped patterns in the muscle fibers? those are supposed to be nice and straight. that is the fibrosis. when your muscle fibers look like that, the muscle does not contract as well and that impairment transfers extra load to the other normal muscle fibers and that extra load causes them to break down and get inflamed and that is what you are feeling. ASTYM, Graston, and eccentric exercise causes those fibers to straighten out and function properly again.

below is what normal muscle fibers look like under microscope...

    can you tell a difference?

and the short answer to will you have to deal with this the rest of your life??

    most likely not.

this is true. but most doctors try to do right by their patients.

my docs don't have to be rich immediately. they believe that if they do the right things by their patients they well get their financial security eventually.

unfortunately for you ziggy, you have been dealing with this chronically for a long time. i do not believe that ice and a brace will fix your problem. it might make the problem bearable, but it will not fix it. and if you don't fix it now you will continue to have the problem. that is why i said ASTYM and Graston are your best bets in lieu of the injection.

Ahhh I understand. This info is awesome! Cheers!

In my email to my doctor, I also gave him the links to those two techniques and if anyone does them here. I'm hoping the physiotherapist next door to my doc might. He's great....fixed my mum's back and hip that a run of chiropractors couldn't fix in 25 years of treatment. Hopefully he can help me in this regard.

I think I'll cancel the appointment for now.

  • I developed hand pain from playing golf and had 2 shots in my finger this year about 4 month apart with the first one in march. It definitely hurts a bit but I was never in excruciating pain afterwards and any pain went away after 3 days. I read about the horror stories as well but my experience was nothing like that and at the end of the day I'm glad I got them.

it is all about technique, if the doctor knows the anatomy well, the approach should be fine and with minimal pain. some doctors are in a serious hurry so they push down on the plunger really hard and inject the medication really fast. we find that if we take an extra 5 seconds or so and inject the fluid a little slower it is not as painful. if you rush the procedure it hurts a lot more. our docs take their time and if we get behind we get caught back up pretty quickly...

  • About 3 years ago, I received a shot of cortisone for a frozen shoulder. Unfortunately, the cortisone did nothing for the pain. Nor did anti-inflammatory drugs (Naproxen). The only thing that helped was physical therapy.

Good luck on Friday! I hope you feel better soon.

I've had 2 injections, the actual injection hurt the second time (definitely found the 'sweet spot') and my elbow was quite sore for a few hours afterwards, but there was no pain (beyond the usual sore elbow) after a few hours went by.
  • I you did not try PT, go for it. The MD should have mentioned this. There is a sequential treatment protocol
that should have been followed. This is a common musculoskeletal problem. Simple, innocuous measures first.

Health systems are driven by business, efficiency, and profits. I am not saying that all MDs are unethical, but patient beware. The goal of the provider is to maximize his or her profits.
The term "patient " I do not like. It sounds passive and dependent. When we enter the doctors office,we should do research and come with a list of questions . Offer suggestions if something was missed. I mean the average doctor office visit last 2 minutes. Profit , profit , and more profit.
I like the term "patient agent' to be used in a medical setting, to convey both the ethical responsibility of the caregivers as well as the goal of enabling the patients to become agents ( one who acts ,who has power, and is capable of producing an effect).
Consider an OT regarding a computer ergonomics consultation and cumulative trauma disorder.

I had one about 8 years ago and it hasn't been an issue since.

The pain was minimal, the shot goes right into the muscle, that's why it's a little uncomfortable but nothing excrutiating.

Has anyone had cortisone injected into their elbow....or another joint?

I've had constant tennis elbow flare ups since 2009. My doctor said the only thing I can do now is inject it with cortisone which may work for 2 months or up to 2 years. It varies with each person. He'll inject me a couple of times with local anaesthetic so the actual injection won't hurt too much (apparently the injection by itself hurts a lot). So I'm not too worried about that.

However, last night I was doing some "research" online and came across a forum which said a few hours and up to 1-2 days after the injection, it HURTS LIKE FUCK!! I read the following comments:

    * Worse pain than my 5 caesareans put together
    * The pain feels like broken arm pain....but worse
    * Feels like a hammer smashing into your elbow over and over and over
    * The worse pain I have ever felt in my life and I'll never EVER do it again

Supposed to go in this Friday. Now I'm shitting my pants. Someone tell me it will be okay....!! :?

i've had two cortisone shots in the elbow for baseball...

the first one was awesome. didn't hurt at all... doctor did a great job. my elbow felt great for a while.

the second one... different doctor. did some strange moving around with the needle while it was in my elbow and it was pretty discomforting. my elbow did not feel better at all afterwords... if anything, it felt worse.

    Thanks for the recent responses.

My doctor is great....he's also a surgeon so I'm not worried about technique etc.

Hmmmm....now I have people saying the shot worked for them....what to do what to do.

I haven't read through everything, but: if you are at the computer with a bent elbow and you feel that contributes, you should change how you are positioned - change the height of your chair, bring the computer closer, move it so that your arm feels better - use a touchpad instead of a mouse or vice versa. Tennis elbow is tendinitis, and you can get it from overuse. I should know - I teach aerobics, and have had it in many of my joints; I have also gotten rid of it myself, from many joints and have never had a cortisone shot For many cases of tendinitis, physical therapy together with icing can help - you usually want to strengthen the muscles around the joint, which can help take some of the stress off the tendons themselves. I would not jump into getting a cortisone shot unless you are going to make changes in how you use your arm, and you should be sure to get evaluated by a physical therapist to learn the correct exercises to strengthen the muscles in your elbow area. While cortisone works for many, remember that it is like a band-aid, and doesn't address the underlying issues that caused your tendinitis to begin with, and it may recur unless you make changes in how you use the arm.

  • Jane makes sense. Go for PT and OT. Cortisone injections pose risks and don't last or may not work at all.

Well I've decided to go ahead with the injection at 2pm tomorrow. Why?

No 1 - It's free until 31 Dec so if I want it done, now is the best time
No 2 - I'm scared I'll get lazy with the physio and this could be a quick fix

So why do I feel guilty?
