Most Pearl Jam fans scoff at this and go "Who cares about the masses anyway, if it's popular and on the radio it must be rubbish anyway, because if a lot of people like it it must be cheap and shallow and produced by tools of the industry."
And around and around we go...
Most Pearl Jam fans wouldn't be saying that if Pearl Jam (new material) was on the radio more often and they were more popular.
And thus became more relevant!
I still remember when fans were joyous over Last Kiss being all over the airwaves - finally, the people that listen to pop-crap all the time can hear what a great band sounds like!
Meanwhile if a Creed or Nickelback covered that song anyone around here would have mocked it to no end.
The most popular acts are the most relevant acts - that's all there is too it.
So by this statement you would say that Justin Bieber, Lady Gaga, and Nickelback are relevant since they are very popular. And don't tell me Lady Gaga is relevant because she can retread what Madonna did 25 years ago. Nickelback sells a lot of records despite them being despised by seemingly everyone. And Justin Bieber is by far bigger than any of the crappy pop stars and boy bands that came before him. Do these artists belong in the hall?

When the RHCP began, their sound was very original - no one else sounded quite like them. I haven't like their later music as much but those early albums rocked - esp. Mother's Milk, and of course Blood Sugar. They were very different than others around them at the time. That, I believe is one important factor in someone going into the HOF - creating a new sound.
Of course the Cure were original too, and I love them, and I hope they get in next time. I mean, how many times did it take IGGY POP to get in?
7 times of nomination. I remember watching that and Iggy stuck both middle fingers in the air, and said something like, "we finally won, and we didn't ever win alot."
