Best show the band has ever played. I challenge the newbs that make up 90% of this board to prove me wrong.
Gordan: Don't want to challenge you, but that is not something that you can messure. Very personal thing. Even you didn't elaborate on that, you just wrote "best show the band has ever played". Why? You had a great time and that's great. I bet there's a bunch of peope that where at the same place five years later that would say that is the best show. Bottom line, that may be the best show that you've been to but to say that was the best show they ever played you would have to be at every show they played. I doubt you were.

I don't know why you think my name is "Gordan", but anyway it was just a blanket statement I was making in a halfhearted attempt to see what other people would claim as "the best show ever". Of course it's subjective and it wasn't really meant to be that big a deal
that was a very good show, but best ever? i'm not quite sure of that. soldier field 95, atlanta 94, msg night one 2003, march 3 1998 and may 21 2010, katowice 2 2000 all jump to mind immediately as better shows
if i thought for 5 minutes i'm sure i could rattle off at least 15 more shows that are more re-listenable.
so, your callout thread is a failure
i have a paper here that entitles me to fast track status

Were you there? I doubt it. You weren't there to hear a crowd explode to unimaginable heights with the opening chord of Breath. Pretty funny that you're laughing at me calling anyone a newb, and then the shows you list are, obviously, all soundboard or FM recordings. Not even New Regal Theater '94, Randall's Island 2 '96 or the Spain/Portugal run from '96, which are all FAR better than the shows you rebut with.
Oh and Katowice 2 2000? Here's my view from that night, how was yours?
But keep basing someone's knowledge on something like post count. That's a proven winner.

lol at you listing jack irons shows as best ever candidates (yes i know soldier field is a jack show, but that one was off the chain)
and randall's island was just long....it was good but best ever? hardly. most of the best shows have come post 2000 or in 1992...depending on how you like your pearl jam. 94-98 have some gems, but i can't get down with any shows from those years being best ever

Ah, thanks for the clarification. 9/11/98 will always be special, but it needs to be taken in context. The night before was the first time the band had ever played MSG, and it was a mediocre show at best. The Breath campaign was happening, and they came out SO FOCUSED and locked in. It was the first Ben Harper guest spot, and the Alive closer with Ed climbing halfway up the mic cord, just swinging around taking it all in. Some things can't always be captured on recordings.

Again, were you at Randall's Island in '96? Were you in that insane pit? I'm guessing no. I'm not really that interested in going back and forth with you to be honest. We can agree to disagree and leave it at that.
Some things can't always be captured on recordings.
Couldn't agree more! I was at the Vancouver 2011 show and being at the show and listening to the boots, I remember Eddie going batshit at the end of Ole. I remember who came out on stage to rock out on RITFW, I remember at which points Eddie was throwing blood spattered tambourines into the crowd and when Mike was tossing his picks, and I remember when Eddie flashed the crowd with the back of his guitar.
All stuff you don't get on the recording, of course.
I always feel an ounce of regret for not being able to be present at certain shows (especially after raving reviews by the Faithfull, here). Then again, I'd be pretty fucking broke...

71's a solid number. I like how you dropped it a)as if it's more than me, or b)as if that has anything to do with it regardless. Both a and b are false.
If I had to make a top 10 list of what I think are the best shows ever, only 3 of them would be shows I was at. You have different taste and that's fine. Continuing to go back and forth on it is just a waste of time.

Two nights before was the first "Breath" campaign signs, at CAA/Izod in NJ.
...I had my own "may I play drums with you" sign campaign from front row center, and Ed asked me if I knew how to play Breath. But then Stone intervened. So Matt got a couple of days to learn the song, but had Stone not intervened, Breath almost got reintroduced to the live catalog in NJ on 9/9/98.
I'd say that any '93 and '94 performance greater than this show, but the crowd is always best at msg.

9/8/98 is always overshadowed by 9/11... a great show in it's own right. I remember how beat I was after driving up from VA Beach after the show the night before (another very good one btw), and I figured with MSG looming this show would be overlooked... but man was it awesome. It was incredible to see the BREATH signs pretty much just in the front sections this night, on the entire floor two nights later, and all the way up to the top of MSG on 9/11. I did Philly to Hartford on that little run, and it's still one of my favorite runs.

Agreed-I was there. One of the best I've seen not just counting the set list. Not as good as 5/21/10 or Philly 10/30/09 for that matter but you could tell they figured out where they were playing and gave everything they had.

See this all comes down to how you view Pearl Jam, and of course everyone is going to have differing opinions. I can't possibly imagine any show from 2010 being better than even an average show from '93-'98. It's to each his own obv.
most of the best shows have come post 2000 or in 1992...depending on how you like your pearl jam. 94-98 have some gems, but i can't get down with any shows from those years being best ever
Haha, woah.
1994 to 1998 are by far the band's best years - live and on record.
Post-2000 shows don't even come close on a performance basis.

I've never had a problem with his live drumming. He was a little rusty in 1995, but understandably so. His live drumming was excellent in 1996-1998 (before he left) - that material has never sounded as good since.
This show is pretty awesome on the audience recording i have. Agreed. However, i wouldn't even say it's the best show at MSG, and i'm *only basing this on audio/video recordings, AS I'VE NEVER BEEN TO A SHOW AT MSG.
But of course. I'm wrong. Lol.
The L@TG show was fucking stellar. As was the other 2003 show. And the 2 2010 shows are amazing. I have the fan DVD's to both. I also have the DVD for 9/11/98, and there's nothing in it that really, whatsoever that would make me think it's the best show ever. I wouldn't even put it top 10.
Oh, and if we're talking about deafening roars... try being present (And i was) for the end of Footsteps at LA3 2009, when Ed out-of-the-blue introed CC. That shit was a fucking roar.

Mine is Dave A. Even Flow will never be as good without him. But again, it's MHO.
