Truly an amazing night and great way to end this incredible tour. My only downer is I lost my camera at the end of the show somehow. So, anyone out there who might have been at this show and came across a Sony Cybershot up front Mike side at the end of the show.... I can deal with losing the camera. What I'm having a harder time with is that I finally got my photo op with Ed tonight and this awesome shot is now not in my world. And I never lose shit. Ugh!

Is this the show that is going to be on Sirius today at 2 EST?
I thought it was broadcast live?
  • Excellent show!
  • The show was off the charts... incredible crowd and the band was on again...as always. They appeared to have fun and put everything into this show...while enjoying their last show of the SA tour. Eddie appeared a bit sick (cold or something), but his performance didn't show it. The crowd was unbelievable and the energy .... never seen such a crowd! Only scary part was being stuck in the 3rd row in front between Mike and Eddie ..... the crowd up there couldn't control themselves at times and the pushing got way too hairy. Made it out alive with many bumps and brusies... but well worth it and not a bad problem to have on the way back home to the States. Would love to see such a crowd in the States every once & a while ..... very very cool to witness! Highlights include: Eddie coming out to play with X on Devil Doll wearing a Lucha Libre mask, opening with Release, Indifference, Of the Earth, Off He Goes and Leash ... and no to forget Rockin' in the Free World as the entire (I mean ENTIRE) crowd starts throwing their red beer cups, plates and whatever they can get their hands on .... very cool to see and the band .. along with X ... just staring in amazement!
To end...I was luckily enough to be able to travel to the CR and MEX shows... and it was well worth it! Thanks again for an unbelievable night! Thank you PJ and thank you Mexico City .... incredible performance!

P.S.-> Never seen this before, but outside the venue, there was probably 100+ vendors selling Pearl Jam goods...t-shirts, scarves, cd/dvds/flags/stickers/pictures/mugs...and much much more ..... couldn't believe all the counterfeit goods ....and that is something you would never see in the States! :)

In 2003 Eddie himself got out of the venue and bought that ilegal merch on such merch stands  . During the concert, Sleater Kinney girls were wearing some of those t-shirts

This time, it was Eddie body guard the one doing the shopping in those merch stands ;)

    well said
  • Gracias, Pearl Jam.
Even flow", "Black", "Do the evolution"...
  • Talks about the thin air, but they don't play it?

This is my review of the show. Of course, this is my perception and might be different from others. Just need to share my experience as I have a really odd feeling towards it.

The show for me was sweet & sour and just wanted to share it with someone that could understand the feeling. Sweet because it was Pearl Jam in my hometown, a kick-ass set list, and some amazing crowd moments. Sour because specially at the beginning, the crowd was incredibly mellow, as I've never seen a Mexican crowd in any show I've attended before; sour because at times I felt there was no connection between the band and the crowd. Overall, it was a great show, but not amazing as I had anticipated.

For those who like numbers, this venue usually mentions its capacity as for 55,000 but in most articles I've seen today, they are reporting the crowd was 60k strong. The show lasted, in my watch, 2h50, although it was maybe closer to 2h45. Definitely over 2h40 though. The show was sold-out right away when tickets went on sale; about a hundred tickets were released the day before the show and got sold out quickly

    The "stadium"
I was in "Verde 02" row 3, which is the very first section of the stands. One reason I hate this venue is that the stands are too far away from the stage and because it's not an enclosed one, thus sound flies away and reduces the crowd impact. Also, access to every section is completely separate (left wing, right wing, GA A, GA B). So once you access your area, cannot get together with friends or checkout stands in the other areas. Anyways, most acts play here, so that's something I have to deal with. My review will be of course based on my location; shows will always be kick-ass at the front, so my perception is from what I saw in the overall venue.

    Technical "issues"
The screens were B&W and the image was backwards. For people far away, it would have seemed everyone in the band was a leftie :) I wonder if this was an issue or a crazy "cool" idea the band had for this tour.

    Merchandise
I got to the venue around the middle of X's set. I saw the merchandise stand at the entrance but decided to enjoy X and then buy stuff in my section; posters were sold out already so it didn't really matter. To my surprise, once I accessed my section I was told there was no Merchandise stand at all! They said people would be selling stuff around but that of course never happened. By the time the show ended, they only had L and XL sizes, which seemed to fit as XL and XXL. I was only able to see two stands with few merchandise... come one, 60k! Merchandise was lacking. Fortunately enough, there's bootleg merchandise around the venue (one of the "jewels" of shows in Mexico) with really cool designs, from t-shirts to cups, mugs, caps... you name it, you will find it there. (As an example, Stone's mug in the PJ20 documentary)

    X
I got to the venue about 3 songs into their set. They were fun to watch and sounded great. It was fun to see Eddie coming out with a "luchador" (wrestler) mask; if I'm not mistaken, it was a Santo one, perhaps the most famous Mexican wrestler of all time. People cheered out but were not as excited with them; I'm almost certain many didn't realize it was Eddie on stage during the last song though, LOL! Overall, tight set.

    The crowd before PJ
This is when I started worrying. When Metallica recorded "Orgullo, Pasion y Gloria" Live DVD in this same venue, many wondered why would Metallica chose Mexico rather than the US, or Canada, or somewhere else. I will always remember an American who went to the show writing in Metclub's forum that the "Mexican crowd was louder and crazier with the first opening act than any American crowd [he had] experienced in the USA while Metallica was playing". This pretty much sums up a Mexican crowd as I've seen it with Metallica, Megadeth, Pearl Jam during their previous visits... you name it. Yesterday night, the crowd was completely quiet between bands... no Mexican waves, no fooling around, no chanting, nothing. A few whistling here and there, and a couple of unsuccessful tries to start an ole, ole. I don't know if it was because of heavy traffic, people coming tired from work, the fact we were just coming back from a long weekend... I'm still wondering, but I was hoping that attitude didn't translate to the show and unfortunately did during several occasions :(

The show, the crowd, the band
The roar of the crowd was awesome as soon as the lights went out. Even though I could listen to people singing most songs, most wouldn't jump, move, or follow the songs either clapping or with the fists up in the air. Perhaps until the first chords of Corduroy the roar reminded me of the fact I was in Mexico City, but energy levels came back right away. It was weird for me that between songs, rather than the usual chanting, people would roar and then would keep really quiet. We Mexicans are not known for heavy jumping, but for keeping the energy all the way up until the end, chanting between songs and heavy pushing on the floor. Up to this point, 'Given to Fly' came. Again, people was singing but I felt something missing between the band and crowd; it's been said that Eddie was sick so I don't know if his energy turned the crowd down, or if it was the other way around.

After Elderly Woman, the "Ole, Ole" finally came; it was strong and awesome but Eddie cut it a bit short, thanking the crowd for it. Evenflow raised the levels right away but soon came back to that mellow flow around.

    The crowd starts responding
In my opinion, it was until Daughter when the energy levels finally were there where I expected them to be. Lighters came out, joining the band by lightning them with the rhythm of music; this is one of our trademarks and the band really appreciated the show we put for them. You could feel this was changing... Of the Earth was a treat to listen, but Nothigman had much more involvement from the crowd... FINALLY Betterman came and the crowd went insane! Weird, as I would have thought Given to Fly or Evenflow would be the trigger, but it was actually Betterman the one finally making this crowd went crazy, and it did big time! Eddie asked us to help him with the singing and we did it. Unfortunately, Porch closed the first part of the set right away. The intermission before the encore also had some chanting, but not to the levels I was expecting.

From here on, the show was much much better; Just Breathe had a good response, while DTE blew people's minds. Along came Black, and the beautiful loud chanting of the crowd; lighters appeared once again (along with clapping from those non-smokers :) ) to join the show. Perhaps one of the highlights of the show; unfortunately, Eddie cut the crowd again almost as soon as the song ended... but it was great!!!

For Spin The Black Circle, Eddie took a flag given by fans almost when the show started, and started spinning it around; crowd appreciated it and cheered along... by now, one could definitely feel it was a Mexican crowd. The Fixer got a good reception but of course Jeremy got the prize for crowd interaction... Why Go was good as well and Encore 2 ended.

Crowd was also kinda quiet during the break; it would have been great if the Ole Ole Ole was sung, but it didn't. Eddie introduced Ole with his very own version of the chanting, LOL. Last Kiss got an awesome reception afterwards; it seems they were supposed to play Smile instead... but I guess once they got the crowd going, they wanted to keep the flow. Leash was a great surprise and I really enjoyed it. Alive had fist-up chanting from every corner of the venue, while Mike visited the far right side of the stage, with Eddie doing the same on the left.

Likes came up and it was time for RITFW; with X on stage, the band had a blast, and so did the crowd. Everyone was throwing their beer cups all over the place, which turned out to be lots of fun for us and the band. I'm sure they played the song for longer than usual, having fun with the "cup fighting".

Indifference was a beautiful and expected treat, to finally end with YLB/Little Wing. The crowd was really pumped up by now, but unfortunately the show was about to end. The "otra, otra" (another song, another song) choir could be heard from everywhere, but the show was over.

    Final thoughts
Don't get me wrong here; it was an great show with a strong performance from Pearl Jam, a dream of a set list (minus Animal, my favorite song), and a great crowd that would overpower almost any other audience in the world. I highly recommend to get this boot, as well as the ones from Chile, Argentina and Brazil (Haven't had the time to check out Lima and San Jose in YouTube, but I will probably get them too)

I read some reports stating that at some point the band was confused about what song was to follow, switching instruments several times between songs and a pissed-off Eddie right before Jeremy. Did they feel the same thing I felt and try to modify the set list on the fly? Did they try to raise the energy, or was I completely out of base? I don't really know, but I still feel as if something was missing.

I have mixed feelings is because this is Mexico... a crowd that should have inspired the band to play for hours, and for the first time in my concert-going experience in my country, I didn't feel that power until perhaps the last hour of the performance. From what I listened from Argentina and Chile videos, the crowd energy was far superior (Of course, being there is different than seen it from afar... I will do a fair comparison once I start listening to our boots or videos), while we should be at least about that same level, as with other acts.

I might be wrong, but I definitely feel we (as an audience) owe Pearl Jam to show them we are one of the top crowds in the world, the same one that inspire them to tour Latin America back in the crazy shows of 2003. And on the other hand, I had one of the best set lists I've had for one of my favorite bands!
