if i were china i would be angry at not just the us for putting a base there, but also at australia for allowing it. we're building a new military base and are putting 2500 of our most elite forces in australia to presumably keep china in check. this is in addition to the massive fleet of navy ships we have in the region. i think it is the 7th fleet??

this would be the exact same thing as china putting a base and 2500 of their most elite forces in venezuela or mexico. americans would be absolutely outraged and see it as an act of war if china did that. please refer to "cuban missile crisis" for further evidence of how the hawks in the united states government would react. i understand china's sentiments completely.

Gimme, that's unfair. America is a force of good and China are evil commies. It's apples and oranges.

look how the Us treats people from other countries.. not very democratic and quite disrespectful imo.

dont be fooled into thinking the USs actions around the world are anything other than self serving. 'we' like them cause theyre just like us.. but the minute they decide were 'the other' we are gone. right now we have something they want... position position position. we have the pacific on one side, the indian ocean on the other. were sitting on asias doorstep and close enough but far enough away from the subcontinent and china to be of vital importance. its a chess game.

Although the USA aren't angels, I find China scarier because of their lack of democracy.
People get beat up and jailed over there for thinking differently to their government.
Looks like we are caught in the middle of this political shitstorm.
Australia became the 51st state of the USA a long time ago anyways

only cause we lack leadership with the balls to play. the US needs us more than we need them in this instance. it really is a mistake to rile ones neighbours when theres an alternative. gillard is a weak leader.

When and if the shit hits the fan, Americans and Australians will bleed in the same trenches together, across the battlefield from Chinese, Russian, Iranian, NKorean, etc...

Personally, I really like everything I've learned about Australians, And I'm glad the USA is strengthening our military alliance w/ them.

Tis a fool, who plans only for peace.

Its not a "deal". This was done to counter the growing Chinese military presence in the Pacific.

Tis a fool that plans only for peace.

Glad Australia's leaders understand that. Next November the US will show Australia that the majority of Americans understand that as well, despite what the media tries to misrepresent.

oh please. of course it is a deal. this was done because the americans are scared shitless of missing out. the thought of an equal power means their influence will diminish and theyll become irrelevant. thats the motivating factor here. chinas growing economic power will be backed up with military power just like every other powerful country that has come before it. amusingly enough the US are in part to blame for chinas rising economic(and therefore military) power. when the west seeks bigger profit through minimising production costs by turning to cheap and exploitative labour this is the result. chinas rise cant be stopped but by force.

australias leaders are nothing but a bunch of suckholes.

The U.S. is afraid of becoming irrelevant, so we sent 2000 Marines to Australia to .... make us feel... better?

no not make you feel better.. your govt doesnt really give a shit how you feel tbh... much like most govts, including my own.

these things dont happen overnight as im sure youre aware. eventually all powers become irrelevant... to what degree depends. there was a time when the sun never set on the british empire... now no one gives a fuck about them. the USs time will come but in the meantime they are doing all they can to slow that down... which is only natural. the best way to maintain influence is to get a foothold in and slowly and steadily build on it. thats whats happening here. australia isnt a pretend friend to the US like pakistan... theres no chance of us stabbing the US with our left hand while we shake your right. and i cant ever imagine a time when an australian leader would refuse a request from an american president.

okay. Glad to hear that, b/c I've always felt a kinship w/ Aussies- damn good people- the ones I've met...

    ...and FUN to drink with!
  • I've yet to see any tanks roll through New York City, so I'd say pepper spray used on people who are being disruptive tames in comparison. I could be wrong, though. For all I know it tickles when a tanks flattens you out.

Protestors get beat up and pepper sprayed here and in many other democratic countries around the world.
The problem with the OWS group is they do not do it peacefully and camp out illegally.
The cops don't just beat them up, they were given eviction notices and failed to comply thus action was taken.
