I thought it would be fun to rank all the albums by a bunch of different bands.

Might as well start with my favorite: the mighty Zep. If anyone wants to start other bands' threads that would be cool.

    Physical Graffiti
    I
    III
    IV
    Houses of the Holy
    II
    Presence
    ITTOD
    Coda

That would probably be radically different in an hour. Coda would be the only one the same.

  • great thread idea...i'll start one after i do this...
ranking zeppelin albums is tough...after some debate my list looks like:

    1.) Houses of the Holy
    2.) Physical Graffiti
    3.) Led Zeppelin IV
    4.) Led Zeppelin III
    5.) Presence
    6.) Led Zeppelin I
    7.) Led Zeppelin II
8.) In Through The Out Door
    9.) Coda

the crazy thing is there's such a small margin between the first 7 albums it's incredible.

...will create some more album ranking threads

Whatever you want dude. Although I would count them separately - I think they're a different entity. I'm not keeping score or anything.

This is going to be like ranking The Beatles' albums, very tough. I don't even know if I have a favorite Zep album. Here goes my attempt. This can all change after I finish writing it.

    Physical Graffiti
    Led Zeppelin 4
    Presence
    Led Zeppelin
    Houses of the Holy
    Led Zeppelin 2
Led Zeppelin 3 (if it wasn't for "Hats Off..." this album would be higher)
    Coda
    In Through the Out Door

I actually like Hats Off, but I don't know how they left Hey Hey What Can I Do off that album. It's the Binaural of LZ as far as poor decisions of what songs to keep. (or I guess Binaural is the LZIII of PJ.)

I agree. Hey Hey What Can I Do is amazingly underrated. But I don't know if it fits on the album. I may have to try it out, taking out Hats Off and substituting Hey Hey.

Play Friends/Celebration Day/Hey Hey, like on the boxed set. Then just delete Hats Off if you don't like it.

Did you know somebody destroyed the beginning of Celebration Day, so they had to blend it with the end of Friends?

  • I can't really rank them but I could put them into two tiers:

    1) Albums I couldn't live without
Houses of the Holy, Led Zeppelin, Led Zeppelin IV, Physical Graffiti

    2) Albums I could live without...BUT WON'T!
Led Zeppelin II, In Through The Out Door, Led Zeppelin III, Presence, Coda

Nice...It was also released as a split single with Black Sabbath Paranoid as the b-side.

    I think I'll try that.

I didn't know about that. I thought Page just wanted to do that.

I wonder if Page is working on remasters/reissues?

What makes their albums great is Page's superb production on them. One of the best producers in music history.

Don't think so - I think all were satisfied with the 1994 remasters. No need for them to grab more money every 5 years a la Rolling Stones.

There were some fairly recent vinyl reissues that are considered the pretty amazing. 200g vinyl, they can still be had new, but they are definitely pricey.

    I-$150
    II-$300
    III-$170
    IV-$225
    Phys Graff-$250
    Presence-$230

Those are the prices over at acousticsounds.com.

I highly recommend Mothership and TSRTS reissue from a few years back on vinyl. I have all the originals and they sound great, but I really like what they did for Mothership tracks and TSRTS is better than the original in every possible way.

I think I'll skip on the album reissues. I found a pretty good used copy at my record shop, along with Physical Graffiti. I should get Presence and Coda cleaned up. I should stop by to see if 2, 3, and Houses of the Holy are in good condition. My dad has IV and TSRTS. Are Mothership and TSRTS reissue still widely available and not too expensive?

Vinyl wasn't a big thing in the mid-90s. Except for me, when I bought all the LZ albums at a used record store. :D Vitalogy really got me into vinyl. Thanks PJ!!!

It's funny how Presence is all over the place in people's lists. Certainly a polarizing album. I say it's Zep being Zep as best they could at that point. And Achilles Last Stand can certainly be considered their greatest song. Considering the adversity some members of the band were facing at the time, it was quite the effort.
