South American crowds

It's all about culture if you ask me and I don't think the US would be the same as the SA fans if they toured less often. I've seen shows in both Europe (and the US) and maybe the crowd at Milan 00 gave me a bit of an idea of how amazing SA could be.My PJ shows:
London 28/10/96, Las Vegas 11/7/98, London 29/5/00, Nurnburg 11/6/00, Prague 14/6/00, Salzburg 18/6/00, Verona 20/6/00, Milan 22/6/00, Zurich 23/6/00, New York 8-9/7/03, Boston 11/7/03, Reading Festival 27/8/06, Shepards Bush 11/8/09, Berlin 15/8/09, Manchester 17/8/09, London 18/8/09, Dublin 22/6/10, Belfast 23/6/10, London (HRC) 25/6/10, Alpine Valley (PJ20) 3-4/9/11, Manchester 20-21/6/12, Leeds 8/7/14, Milton Keynes 11/7/14 To be continued....0 -

I feel the same way.
It's been enjoyable watching the videos of the crowds down there, but I don't like GA shows, even when I was younger. I don't feel like having some 6'+ guy dig and push his forearms into my back all night as he tries to get 2 inches closer to the stage. I like feeling safe and secure. Having a seat physically defines my personal space and makes me feel safe.
so are all PJ shows in the US seated shows then? like you actually have seats but then everyone gets up when they start playing? I've always wondered this, as otherwise it must be quite difficult to enforce seniority rule with fanclub tickets.
I personally love GA. I enjoyed being in GA in the US as well, crowds tend to be much more mellow regarding pushing etc. than what I was used to from Europe (especially Germany), but I wouldn't say that they're less passionate. I can't imagine being in a seat (as in, away from the floor) for a rock show...that'd be the ultimate last resort if I couldn't get to see a show at all otherwise, but I really disliked it and I've only done it 2 times out of all the concerts I went to.
Italian crowds are horribly lame usually, but it seems my country makes an exception for this band.South Americans seem to be on a whole different level.

Hi,
I felt this way before I went to the two Sao Paulo shows this tour....But, I now like the G A better than seating in the U.S....You have more space and freedom to move around...Not just the area of your chair for reserved seats.....Also, they do have people selling beer, soda and food in the general admission...They actually walk around through the general admission crowd....Only problem is going to the bathroom...You always can have your friend that is with you...Hold your spot for you....The crowd wasn't that bad as far as pushing in my area....Probably worse the closer you get to the stage..But, overall only a lot of pushing during heavier tracks...For an example Do the Evolution & Go etc...
Overall I wish Pearl Jam had more General Admission shows in the U.SA......
The crowds in South America are amazing...I could tell the band was feeding off the fans...Which I think made them step up their game even more....Also, it was an amazing experience for me to be in a crowd that so active and passionate...

to me, a great crowd is just as important, if not more important than a stellar setlist.
either way, i'm at a pearl jam show.. i've seen them 51 times since that first magical night in Reading, PA 10/1/04..
In North America, the fans have become jaded. Its about chasing songs, merchandise (which for the life of me I cant understand.. people complain about waiting all day for a good spot at a GA show, but will wait 8 hours for a poster or a tee shirt). I can't stand when i'm at a show and everyone is more concerned with checking text messages, herding like cows in a line for 10 dollar cups of watered down beer, and rare songs.
I love rare songs as much as the next guy, but i'd enjoy an electric Even Flow like the one posted in the video above, over a Sweet Lew or Bugs any day.
For example, in the 2005 Canada tour, I went to Montreal and Ottawa. Montreal's crowd was fucking amazing!! every person was singing, dancing, and genuinely there for the band. In Ottawa, however.. the crowd was basically asleep. People just standing there, arms crossed, holding a cup of beer and constantly checking a cell phone.
On paper, Ottawa is one of the best shows of 2005, and it still gets constant play from me. But in terms of reliving a show, give me Montreal ANY DAY.
Luckily enough, certain places in the US will get amazing crowds.. i don't know if its because of the amount of 10c members at certain shows, but both nights of Alpine were fucking unreal. Philly 3, 10/30/09, is the best live music experience of my life.. not only was the crowd absolutely electric, but the setlist was like a wet dream for me.
Honorable mention go to MSG 2 2010, and i can't forget IRVING PLAZA 2006. Put 500 PJ lunatics in a room with their favorite band and see what wild looks like!!
but, at the other end of the spectrum.. Beacon Theater 2008 just might be at the bottom of my list.. right there with DC 06, Camden 1 06, and Hartford 06.
Even though i was in a small theater seeing my favorite band, and even though the setlist was full of some of my favorite songs (Sleight Of Hand, Light Years, Low Light, Masters Of War).. the crowd was absolutely awful. IT was borderline disrespectful how much these people just didn't care.
Sorry for my long winded rant, but holy crap those videos amazed me. I must make it to Buenos Aires the next time PJ play there.. i don't care if they play corduroy and even flow 15 times each all night.under your tongue, im like a tab.. i will give you what your not supposed to have
in wide open spaces we sing, with strings.. launch a full on musical cannonball.. guided by bells that we bring, they ring.. sound for the sky and the sun, our own waterfall...
one with the raging wind, alive on the highest tides, my ship at sail can climb a mountain.. ride it to the sky0 -

As much as you want a gig to be a personal thing, ie you and the band connecting, the people around you matter so much.
I saw Fleet Foxes this year and during the newer quiter tracks people were talking and laughing and I couldn't hear the band. I paid £40 to enjoy the gig and not have people around me yakking the whole time. I had to tell some people to shut the fuck up. Grumpy old man right here
On the flip side, when the energy around you from people is electric and everyone is stoked to be there, how can you not get caught up in that. That pearl jam Shepherds Bush crowd reaction sticks out in my mind for sure.
Coming from a hardcore/punk background, that is a really intense fan reaction and that kinda energy is what moves a show along and what can turn a bands performance on its head. It's an input/output thing. The band will give 100% when the crowd is giving 100% as well, if there is a lacklustre crowd then it affects the bands playing and I know this from personal experience. I've toured quite a bit round the world and the gigs we played where people sang along or moved or had some kinda experience rather than standing with arms folded were the ones that will always stick out for me.theserialthrilla wrote:Sealed vinyl is bad vinyl.

Hello, I'm from argentina and i was there, In la plata 2011 and in Ferro Stadium 2005... Both are myths now a day for this lands
Really SPECIAL shows for me and for all my friends.
Just 2 shows here en 20 years, thats one of the reasons for that energy, there is a few lucky guys who travel to usa to see PJ, so almost all of us were waiting to waste all energy at the show!!!!
On the other hand, PJ is SO BIG and at the same time is so CLOSE to their fans that the relation is closer than any band in the world.
We gave just the minumum that we owed to PJ for 20 years of great music, love, respect, friendship and loyalty.
We are a happy familyHapiness only real when shared0 -
GD274660 wrote:Wonder how the crowds in the US would be if they only played there 2 times every 10 years?
Hell no... with argentinian bands we have the same feeling, even if we see them 10 times per year, the crowd here it´s still insane, even dangerous sometimes with metal shows hehe...
By the way, I live in Buenos aires, five days after the show and i'm still excited, can't listen anything but Pearl Jam songs... with hundreds of gigs in my entire life, this never happened to me. Neither ACDC, Iron Maiden, Kiss, RATM, Deep Purple, Metallica or Roger Waters managed to make me feel this way ... it was totally amazing, mythical.0 -

Such an amazing spectacle, now I know why Dimitris wanted to go to Argentina so bad. Before I die, I need to see a big show in South America (preferably Pearl Jam).
