My favourite part was Mikey doing the Stairway to Heaven during Crazy Mary. Then trading off on the solo with Boom. Thank you Mikey.

I agree, Mikey doing the Stairway solo is rare, great stuff, I was going nuts!
  • Not to say this is from someone who hates the band, but this is the review my friend Alan put up on his Myspace page. He's never really been a huge Pearl Jam fan (as he explains in his review) but has always had respect for the band, and so he decided to check out the Ottawa show. I'll let the review speak for itself.

Unlike most of my reviews, I actually don’t have a lot to say about the concert itself, so I will fill space by telling you the story of me and Pearl Jam to make it seem like I have a lot more to say.

Pearl Jam has always been an interesting band for me. When Ten was released, I was in grade 8. I was not the least bit interested in them, despite the fact that it was probably the biggest album in all of my school at the time. I was aware of some of the singles from the album, but the music just wasn’t my thing at the time. I didn’t end up beginning to appreciate the album until 1996 when I started university and heard a lot of their music again on the radio, so I decided to take the plunge and pick up Ten on sale. Good decision (as everyone but me knew already). After enjoying that, I decided to pick up more of their albums each time I found them second hand. However, even though I own a lot of Pearl Jam’s mainstream releases, I am still not entirely familiar with all of their material.

Now a few of my friends are big Pearl Jam (PJ) fans. I should actually clarify this: Jamie is a big fan, buys all the albums including some of the live stuff, enjoys the bootlegs, and is aware of most of the work that PJ is doing. Lorne, on the other hand, can only be classified as obsessed with PJ. He has absolutely everything he can get his hands on involving the band, including dozens of live recordings that he has collected over the years. He’s traveled to 5 cities to see them play in concert (and seen them in his hometown of Winnipeg as well). He even has ‘Release’ tattooed across his back. Spending as much time as I have with the Lorne and Jamie over the years, I feel a little left out when the two of them start talking about the latest PJ news, or which songs they are into. One thing I have always heard from them though was that a PJ concert was a must see event. I have had a few chances to see them in the past but had taken a pass, so when a concert was announced for here in Ottawa and my friend Mike asked me to go, I decided to take the plunge.

What an awesome decision on my part.

There’s no point in me telling you about the songs that were performed as I was only familiar with about half of the material, but let’s just say that I could see from the reactions of the crowd that the band made good selections (I have included the setlist below). Also, there is really nothing that I can say about the sound of the band other than that they were fucking solid, and Eddie Vedder sounds fantastic live.

I usually mention how much value I got from a show at the very end of the review, but I will post it now as the bulk of what I want to say from this point on has to do with the concert value:

    I Paid: 70 dollars

I Should Have Paid: While I’d pay no more than 75 dollars to see Pearl Jam, I’d gladly pay up to that amount to see one of their shows again in the future. Even as a moderate fan, you get total bang for your buck because of the following:

    1. As mentioned above, the music kicks ass. The songs that I knew sounded great, and I gained appreciation for a lot of songs that I had not been so into in the past (most notably was ‘Given To Fly’, which blew me away live). I was very jealous of the audience that was there who were into everything that was being played, as I know they got even more enjoyment out of the show that I did.

    2. Unlike a lot of large shows I’ve seen recently (Coldplay, I’m looking at YOU), this show didn’t use any gimmicky effects, video screens, or over the top lightshows. Yes, there were lights involved, but they were used to give that subtle accentuation to the music, and they added to the experience as opposed to creating a distraction. Oh, and putting the houselights on for the last two songs = awesome.

    3. Pearl Jam started just after 9pm. The show was over at 11:55pm. Most bands can’t even be bothered to give you an hour and a half these days.

I guess I should mention the opening act quickly: Sleater-Kinney was the opener for this show. I know they have their fans out there, but I thought they were mediocre at best, and I actually ended up falling asleep for 10 minutes of their set.

So to conclude, I will give this advice to all you moderate PJfans out there (this would include those of you who only own copies of Ten and Vs., those of you like me who own a few more albums than that but don’t listen to them that often, or even those of you who don’t have any PJ albums but turn up your radio station just a little each time ‘Alive’ is played): If these guys come to your town, go and see them. You will not be disappointed.

Agreed! I have always thought that . . . no pyrotechnics, no video screens, nothing. So nice to see a band that can entertain based on how the band members perform/sing on stage. Glad someone else notices.

    Hilarious! :)

Oh, and I'm liking the fact the the Ottawa Fanview thread seems to be the most popular (most replies & views) - that's a good sign that the show was AMAZING and may influence the band/10C/whoever to release:
    a) an official CD bootleg and
    b) a DVD of the show!!!!!

    Whaddya think????

  • Well, I thought I'd share this secret with you....I just received an iPod and it only cost me 99 cents. All you have to do is click this link http://ipods.freepay.com/?r=22444385 and then sign up for one month of Real Rhapsody, this amazing music service, for only 99 cents. You can cancel within 30 days and that's all you'll ever pay. Then post a message like this so five other people can sign up and your iPod will be on it's way. Believe me, I've done this and it works. It's 100% legit. If you have any questions or need help please feel free to email me at vedder34@hotmail.com

    Hey Hey!

I finally got the Ottawa boot and just finished listening to Crazy Mary and I must say it's the best version I have ever heard. 10min.+ long!!!!! I'm not usually a fan of it but I knew it was a special version when I heard it Friday night and the boot just confirms it . . . . the boot is worth this song alone!

Oh, and still no pictures of Mikey on the floor during 'Alive' floating around?

Ottowa was definitely the most emotional show for the band and the fans as well. Wash to open . . . all I can say is if you don't have the boot - get it and listen to it. It's just amazing stuff. I hope we get some video of this tour!
