If they drank it as it's supposed to be (ie diluted with water), they most probably wouldn't have been as bad. It's a crime to drink it neat! Absinthe's alcoholic strength is more than the usual spirits (gin, vodka, etc.) that are more the norm for drinking. These are around 38-40%. Absinthe can go to 75%+ (with the more common ones at around 65-70%). So it's really easy to get completed wasted on absinthe.....

I think that is all American stuff and diluted compared the Euro stuff. (At least it used to be illegal to sell in it's proper strength/form here.) So may drink 2x the amount.
It makes my stomach hurt just thinking about it. Holy shitballs.

i brought black absinthe for my dad from Prague a few years ago. it's something like 90% alcohol, so he decided he'll keep it for "special occasion"...well it hasn't been open yet
i had a little over half a shot of tenneyson last night. i think it might be one of the weakest you can buy. it was really strong but i liked the taste. i could taste, fennel, mint and licorice. the licorice flavor got stronger as it sat. it took me a while to drink it. it was a different kind of buzz. i didn't feel drunk, i felt really happy. i only had a new grist an hour earlier with dinner, but a few minutes after we left the bar, i blew a .08 on one of those personal breathalyzers.
After seeing two of guys who were once my friends get so drunk and sick on it and be kicked out of a club by security I vowed never to try it.
They only had a little bit of it and got stupid drunk.
